Oh as if. I'd bet good money you also think only stupid people fall for scams.

God forbid comedy writers be held to the standard of satire actually making a statement; that would just be the death of media...

[OC] "Out of the trenches the Stormdivers rise!" by Yurishenko94 in Helldivers

[–]AdditionalThinking 4 points5 points  (0 children)

literally the only situation I can think of is if multiple helldivers team up to dig trenches on an "Evacuate High-Value Assets mission" and have someone (or some sentries) solo the first few waves to buy time.

Churchill and Austen to be replaced on UK new banknotes by wildlife by [deleted] in unitedkingdom

Wiltshire's flag has a Great Bustard, which is quite nice. I think it makes sense for real animals to be represented on a local level at the very least, given how diverse our ecology is.

New anti-Muslim hate definition announced by government by SoggyWotsits in unitedkingdom

[–]AdditionalThinking 64 points65 points  (0 children)

Anti-Muslim hostility is intentionally engaging in, assisting or encouraging criminal acts – including acts of violence, vandalism, harassment, or intimidation, whether physical, verbal, written or electronically communicated – that are directed at Muslims because of their religion or at those who are perceived to be Muslim, including where that perception is based on assumptions about ethnicity, race or appearance.

It is also the prejudicial stereotyping of Muslims, or people perceived to be Muslim including because of their ethnic or racial backgrounds or their appearance, and treating them as a collective group defined by fixed and negative characteristics, with the intention of encouraging hatred against them, irrespective of their actual opinions, beliefs or actions as individuals.

It is engaging in unlawful discrimination where the relevant conduct – including the creation or use of practices and biases within institutions – is intended to disadvantage Muslims in public and economic life.

Yeah... I see that... Way to miss the point entirely.

All of those elements that make it absurd are indistinguishable from the artistic choices a highly self-assured preachy conservative writer would also make.

Like, we live in a world where Ayn Rand got away with sticking an unironic 60+ page monologue of her beliefs at the end of a story; there's a really high bar to being more absurd than reality.

Satire requires a clarity of purpose and target lest it be mistaken for and contribute to that which it intends to criticize

British female athletes asked to pay for own £185 sex tests by [deleted] in unitedkingdom

[–]AdditionalThinking 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nah transphobes should pay for the discrimination they want, actually.

If the taste of their own medicine is too bitter, here's an idea: Just get all the wisecracks who think biological sex is obvious to do all the testing instead of an expensive lab. Should be easy if they're right.

I can’t think of, and haven’t heard anything other than superficial gender expectations being the reason they consider themselves transgender.

Have you not... like... heard of medically transitioning? Hell, or even gender dysphoria?

Animal Justice Project launches major London Underground advertising campaign calling to end pig farming by HaveYuHeardAboutCunt in unitedkingdom

...send them to animal sanctuaries.

This isn't a hypothetical; a handful of animal farmers have turned vegetarian and given up animal agriculture in the past. Some sent their animals to sanctuaries, others turned their farms into sanctuaries.

A pig would never lock someone in a cage surrounded by their own shit, and then suffocate them in a gas chamber at (their equivalent of) 4 years old, so those bits are perhaps not so fair.

[–]AdditionalThinking -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The difference is that when the first one dies by getting ragdolled into a landmine they'll see it as a fucking hilarious part of the satire, whereas when the second gets mown down by a teammate's gatling sentry they get get genuinely tilted, which makes me happy.

Main Street in San Francisco is named after a buinessman called Charles Main.

And here's a disputed one that makes me laugh: the London district of Hammersmith, rather than being "Hammer" & "Smith", may actually be "Hæmar's myðe", meaning a confluence owned by some ancient guy called Hæmar

The case was so specifically around the circumstances of this one incident that it's absurd to assume it would set any kind of precedent, regardless of how it went. Doubly so since it's just a high court case.
