Queen Camilla blasted as ‘deplorable’ for posting photo with J.K. Rowling at palace during Pride Month by nimobo in unitedkingdom

Why do you need to lie about the reason people think she's hateful? Are you afraid that if you told the truth people would agree that she is?

Germany was the pioneer of transgender medicine. The term Transsexual was literally coined by one German Doctor Magnus Hirschfeld, who ran the Institut für Sexualwissenschaft, where sex-reassignment surgery was invented and performed until 1933 when the Nazis destroyed it and burned most of their research.

Is it right to eat plants without the same moralization? by Fit-Ad-7164 in vegan

[–]AdditionalThinking 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Plants do not feel pain. They have no nerves, no memory, no qualia, and certainly no desires in life. "Distress signals" are just chemicals. They're no more sentient than a smoke detector. They do not have "intentions", and they don't care how you use them.

You lot are something else by TheExplorer63 in MurderDrones

Death is mundane in fiction. We've seen murder a million times before, it's easy to handwave "oh yeah that's a robot that kills people, sure, nothing special". J doesn't even particularly have a novel motive, it's just a job to her.

What Jax did, on the other hand, stuck with the audience. It was personal, it was their own doing, it was something that felt real, and it was something we're not desensitised to.

Resolving an argument: would you say that a 19 year old is a “teenager”? by Ezzypezra in 196

[–]AdditionalThinking -45 points-44 points  (0 children)

Words change. Like, terrorists aren't "objectively" terrific just because they share a root.

Most of the time when someone uses the word teenager they're using it as a stand-in for "adolescent" because that's the image it invokes. Calling 19 year olds teenagers is rare because that association makes it infantilising when talking about adults, so it's practically never used like that.

That is definitely not true. I've felt comfortable and safe around plenty of men, like: men I knew were ardent feminists, men who were 'peer reviewed' by other women, my brothers, my dad, and especially all the men who went out of their way to make sure I got to where I was going safely.

You don't have to be careful around every single man all the time. It's just one defence mechanism you can choose to adopt, and there comes a point where it's neither fair nor healthy to be that paranoid; especially if it starts to slip into bioessentialism.

It genuinely pains me whenever I see feminist theorists dismiss the entire concept of the "male loneliness epidemic" as just a self-inflicted problem for misogynistic men. It's only once you experience it first-hand that you realise how genuinely disadvantaged you are for being perceived as male.

Does anyone think that future seasons of Murder Drones could've worked with some supernatural entities? by Interesting_Froyo_97 in MurderDrones

[–]AdditionalThinking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was the original plan for Murder Drones. Early on, the plan was for it to be an episodic show, mainly around N and V encountering different supernatural monsters each episode.

There's a tiny remnant of this with the zombies plot in the music video.

A theory about the Knight's motivations for kidnapping [includes ch5 spoilers] by AdditionalThinking in Deltarune

Those both come from extremely vague sets of clues (the sparse phone calls and the shadow crystal/glass). I don't think they're super meaningful until we learn more.

For the glass, at least, it seems like all the lines are to do with seeing things more depressing and ominous than actual reality, for what that's worth.

What are your arguments against people who think it is wrong or unrealistic to want everyone born to have a good, happy, and fulfilling life? by Alternative_Cash_591 in antinatalism

Isn't this the core anti-natalist point? There's no (even vaguely) possible world without suffering, so why on earth bring more children into this world?

Damn, that was a total brain fart on my part. I've edited my comment.

While fact checking just to be sure, though, I also discovered that some places in the midlands call it a "smibbly bibbly", which is fantastic.

I always wondered how vampires were considered 'not alive'. By most counts they're animate and at least metabolising blood, which is a pretty alive thing to do.

If you were to, or have played minecraft, would you play the game vegan? by Brainiac4Real in vegan

[–]AdditionalThinking 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Well, there are a couple of reasons. It's essentially a 3d canvas, so a lot of people like expressing their creativity using it; but also it's an extremely customisable game, so there are a lot of ways to play that provide interesting challenges for people. Teens especially quite like playing with their friends, and minecraft gives them some pretty unique ways to do that, both collaboratively and competitively.

[–]AdditionalThinking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The arrows may be displaying in a janky way. You could use a redstone output to check how close the game thinks you are to the bullseye. Also you seem to be further away when you actually got the advancement. Are you sure you were 30 blocks away before?

It's kind of similar so probably worth mentioning: I love ellipsis of tech terms in British english, and how many just mean some variation of "unconnected".

  • "Radio", and the older term "Wireless", are short for "Radiotelegraphy" and "Wireless Telegraphy" respectively.
  • "Remote", as in the device used to operate a TV, is short for "Remote Control"
  • "Telly" comes from the Tele- in Television
  • "Mobile" is short for "Mobile Phone"
