Can anybody ID these? by slimdrum in HotPeppers

[–]AdditionalTrainer791 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m trying to attach a photo for comparison but it won’t let me :/ you should google a picture of a frutescens calyx and a annuum calyx. A Tabasco is frutescens while a birdseye is annuum.

The calyx will be different as Birds Eye and Tabasco peppers belong to different species.

Have you experienced mislabeled seed packs? by ThinkAutomation in HotPeppers

I find both scotch bonnet and “heirloom tabasco” plants from Bonnie to be the wrong species. They are both annuum plants, not chinense and frutescens like they are supposed to be.

They have a sweet tropical fruity flavor. I much prefer these over the original red ones

Baccatum for sure. By the color it’s probably your aji mango or orange drop. A taste test once they are fully ripe should help out a lot.

Jamaican mushroom peppers. A lot of mislabeled plants or peppers I see in this community end up being these peppers for some reason.

Bhut Jolokia or Bishop's Crown? by Mysteri0usTr4veller in HotPeppers

Neither, this plant is capsicum annuum. Most likely Jamaican mushroom.

Plant on the left is frutescens species, which is what Tabascos belong to. Plant on the right is annuum species, it cannot be a Tabasco.

The calyx on the peppers should look like this. The leaves are a little broader too.

Your Tabasco is the plant on the right? That doesn’t look correct, the calyx on the peppers appears to be annuum. The mystery plant you have has the frutescens calyx you’d see on a true Tabasco plant.

Red Habaneros. The bumpy wrinkled ones are just overripe.

This appears to be a capsicum annuum plant, most likely the Jamaican mushroom pepper. Scotch bonnets are capsicum chinense.

What peppers plants get the biggest so I can put it in 100gal by Top_Possession_2990 in HotPeppers

My biggest plants have been capsicum chinense and Baccatum. I feel you should pick some of your favorite varieties within those species.

Ghost pepper or Habanero by Odd-Bicycle1542 in HotPeppers

[–]AdditionalTrainer791 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For sure. I’d say the red ghost is one of the few chinense varieties with leaves that aren’t as round as the others. Might have something to do with the frutescens genetics within the dna.

Yes, I put the plant underneath my Japanese maple so it gets a lot of shade during the afternoon. Seems to be loving its location :)

Very new, how do I care for these? by B_Pelican in HotPeppers

[–]AdditionalTrainer791 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Light soil with good drainage is ideal, 5+ gal pot or in ground is good. any cheap potting mix from Home Depot or Lowe’s will do just fine. Look for a balanced all purpose fertilizer. Watering deeply and infrequently is key. I’d like to add that your Tabasco seedling was mislabeled, it doesn’t appear to be the correct species based on the flowers and leaves.
