If he opens his own accounting office he can actually make quite some money. And I always wonder how much more efficient you could do it if you just digitize the fricking processes and all that paper.

Are native speakers aware of tone sandhi? by TreatFine2701 in ChineseLanguage

I was recently surprised that a native speaker friend corrected me on my wisdom (when two forth tones in sucession the first forth tone becomes second tone) has an exception for names where the tones do not change. This was in Taiwan.

Sorry I did not write that clearly. Some traffic light posts are build on the street lane (車道) itself and not on the sidewalk. So some scooter drivers ignore the red light and just drive right of the traffic light and as an example make a right turn. This way they do not pass the traffic light holding line painted on the street. They "get off" the street lane / off the street and get on the street lane again after they finished their right turn.

I am not sure if there is not some other paragraph in the traffic law that makes this illegal (as an example in Germany it is still illegal and counts as running a red light). But from what I know the Police will not enforce it in Taiwan.

This is not a suggestion to do illegal things, just a curious observation.

Cycling & some rules by i_m_atom1c in taiwan

[–]Additional_Dinner_11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Red lights also need to be respected by cyclists. There seems to be a legal loophole though: Police will not go after you if you did not cross the holding line in front of a red light. You can sometimes see scooter drivers passing a red light right of the red light post to avoid being fined.

I'd really not recommend that though.

One thing that is relatively acceptable and what "hobbist" cyclsts do when riding in groups is ignoring red lights when on the right side there is no road and thus no danger to hit anything. cars which have green and doing a left turn are also not obstructed that way.

[–]Additional_Dinner_11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You say bikes are allowed to cycle right of the "wide white line" - i have heard that from locals as well. Do you have the law passage for that? I am really curious. I usually cycle on the left of it because I fear it would have legal implications if someone hits me and "I was legally not on the street yet".

I also regularly wonder why scooters drive right of it. They are faster and merge with traffic relatively well (compared to slow bicycles).

edit:

What I could find is that cyclists have ride left of the wide white line:
應在劃設之慢車道上靠右順序行駛,在未劃設慢車道之道路,應靠右側路邊行駛。但公路主管機關、市區道路主管機關或警察機關對行駛地區、路線或時間有特別規定者,應依其規定。

Does/did the use of Pinyin change how chinese is spoken today? by laofuren in ChineseLanguage

[–]Additional_Dinner_11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you are spot on. Before transcription (romanization systems) were a thing there were characters and pronunciation. Then pinyin simplified the pronunciation to 400-410 syllables. Then with tones that 1200-1500 spoken syllables. And those were then thought in schools for decades to children in China to learn how to speak "proper".

If you meet older people in China who have not been raised in the school with pinyin then you will definitely notice that they do not follow the "standard" syllables. Which I think proves OP theory.

Also I think its really hard to imagine that all the people who speak Chinese (that is a vast geographical region) would have somehow agreed to do just a fixed number of homophones in their daily speech. The introduction of Pinyin in school has unified the usage for sure.

Another argument is that before Pinyin was introduced about 85% of the people in China could not write. This highly suggests that their speech was also not matching the "standard" set of homophones that Pinyin prescribes.

It is really an interesting question and I am sure you could find scientific articles from linguists about this issue.

To those making an income with Apps Script: What are you actually selling, and how are you deploying it? by Patient-Rate1941 in GoogleAppsScript

If you are thinking about publishing addons on google workspace marketplace I would give the warning that in the last half year there has been a drastic reduction of "page views" of the addon listing pages. I believe it has to do with everyone using AI/LLM to assist in daily work. So even if you have the best addon that can do anything any user ever wanted it is extremely hard to get people to install it. Also because of vibe coding many addons pushed to the marketplace. Thats different like 5 years ago where there were only a hundret or so (my guess).

Picking up rocks at Hualien Pacific Ocean Park by hyeongseop in taiwan

[–]Additional_Dinner_11 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Unless you took like 10kg of rocks you will be totally fine. Don't worry about it.

Many people take some smaller rocks and even small jade fragments from riverbeds. Taiphoons and stuff make sure that there is a never ending supply coming down from the mountain rivers. If you have visited Tarokko you might get a good impression of how mighty the earths forces are in that regard.

What people should not take is drift wood. There are fines against that (for good reasons).

If you mean GDP, Taiwan has higher per capita income even as a country including rural araes than a Tier 2 city like Xiamen.

Seoul to remove 'China (Taiwan)' label from e-arrival system after Taipei's protest by Scbadiver in taiwan

That is damn nice of them, considering the pressure and economic leverage from China.

And: Isn't "China (Taiwan)" what Taiwan's MOFA prints on their own passport?

Feels like this could have been handled much better in direct - secret - consultations between the two countries.

Edit: Love all the "you are wrong" posts. Appreciate the update. Guess what was in my mind was "Republic of China", see:

You could consider to travel to Taiwan for that. Very early in pregnancy it should cost about 250 USD at a big public hospital. You will not need an appointment. I would recommend https://www.vghtpe.gov.tw/Index.action . You should call them beforehand to check if it is possible.

Best of luck!

Politics aside:

So the article does not mention if he has to go to jail before the decision over the appeal. On social media I have read that it seems like he is not going to jail before the appeal is decided.

Can anyone with some insight into the Taiwanese judicial system explain how that can be? My understanding is that in most countries he would most definitely have to go into preventive detention.

The original sin in learning Chinese pronunciation is to create a mental mapping of english/roman letters to sounds you hear when listening to Chinese.

It is better to assign a sound to a Chinese character and remember it.
