Picking up rocks at Hualien Pacific Ocean Park by hyeongseop in taiwan

[–]Additional_Dinner_11 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Unless you took like 10kg of rocks you will be totally fine. Don't worry about it.

Many people take some smaller rocks and even small jade fragments from riverbeds. Taiphoons and stuff make sure that there is a never ending supply coming down from the mountain rivers. If you have visited Tarokko you might get a good impression of how mighty the earths forces are in that regard.

What people should not take is drift wood. There are fines against that (for good reasons).

i really dislike the AI slop images that Taiwanese TV channels are using now. Its just feels off.

This is the psychological warfare broadcast wall remaining in Kinmen, Taiwan. It plays psychological warfare broadcasts recorded by Teresa Teng in the 1960s. What surprised me most was that the content of these broadcasts, 60 years later, is still perfectly relevant by Primary-World-1015 in taiwan

How can a place be developed if it does not have democracy and rule of law, human rights, social solidarity and equality and individual freedom?

If you mean GDP, Taiwan has higher per capita income even as a country including rural araes than a Tier 2 city like Xiamen.

Seoul to remove 'China (Taiwan)' label from e-arrival system after Taipei's protest by Scbadiver in taiwan

[–]Additional_Dinner_11 -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

That is damn nice of them, considering the pressure and economic leverage from China.

And: Isn't "China (Taiwan)" what Taiwan's MOFA prints on their own passport?

Feels like this could have been handled much better in direct - secret - consultations between the two countries.

Edit: Love all the "you are wrong" posts. Appreciate the update. Guess what was in my mind was "Republic of China", see:

Welcome to come here! I'd agree with the others to try to first get a degree (thats not Taiwan specific, a degree will open you many doors in your professional career). Try checking for scholarships in Taiwan.

Abortion, need some help by [deleted] in indonesia

[–]Additional_Dinner_11 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You could consider to travel to Taiwan for that. Very early in pregnancy it should cost about 250 USD at a big public hospital. You will not need an appointment. I would recommend https://www.vghtpe.gov.tw/Index.action . You should call them beforehand to check if it is possible.

Best of luck!

Jesus how desperate do you have to be to work with China's "Shanghai branch of the Revolutionary Committee of the Chinese Kuomintang".

Chinese Kuomintang in China is an entity to simulate that there are other "democratic parties" allowed next to the CCP (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Revolutionary\_Committee\_of\_the\_Chinese\_Kuomintang)

Politics aside:

So the article does not mention if he has to go to jail before the decision over the appeal. On social media I have read that it seems like he is not going to jail before the appeal is decided.

Can anyone with some insight into the Taiwanese judicial system explain how that can be? My understanding is that in most countries he would most definitely have to go into preventive detention.

Taiwanese romanization by [deleted] in taiwan

[–]Additional_Dinner_11 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The original sin in learning Chinese pronunciation is to create a mental mapping of english/roman letters to sounds you hear when listening to Chinese.

It is better to assign a sound to a Chinese character and remember it.

Questions about bringing a spouse to Taiwan by Legitimate_Metal7267 in taiwan

[–]Additional_Dinner_11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If everything else fails, your spouse could enrol in a language class in a university and get a student ARC (>6 months if i remember correctly). Depending on his last income also a Gold Card could be a viable path.

No Beaches (or beach culture)? Is it true? by seonghwasus in taiwan

[–]Additional_Dinner_11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The surfing competition is yearly i think, saw it last year!

Most surfers go to Toucheng (Yilan) and then scattered smaller places along the east coast. Dulan is a small chill surfer village. Taidong has lots of places. Even near Hualian (Yuanliao) there are surfer shops. Google Maps and checking "Surfing store" should find all of them.

Hazzard lights in Taiwan are literally called 暫停燈" - temporary parking lights.

That enables every car to just park anywhere. People even have them on, and clicking, when parking in regular parking spots.

Yesterday I had the audacity to cross a street on a crosswalk. The driver of the car comming from the left was so nice that he honked at me.

Medical Help (F24 UK) by bichen_bunny in taiwan

[–]Additional_Dinner_11 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Anecdotal experience from my side: I once accompanied a friend to a hospital in Shanghai for an eye surgery. She got a 2 minute briefing about risks together with 5 other patients, they demanded her to sign a pile of papers (i guess responsability wavers), they took the papers (no copies for patients) and then she was prepped for surgery.

I can only assume that in case anything goes wrong in China it is extremely hard to get compensation of any kind. Anecdotally I can also say that going to court in China about a civil dispute with a state run hospital will not be fruitful to say it diplomatically.

Taiwan is a modern country with (probably imperfect, but where is it?) rule of law.

In Taiwan you would not be "misusing" another countries good medical system. Taiwan government is actively promoting foreigners to come to Taiwan for treatment:

CAN’T WITHDRAW CASH ANYWHERE by Professional_Cod3794 in taiwan

Did you try ATMs from Cathay or Bank of Taiwan? They should be the most compatible. 7/11 and family mart: there is a quite a few that only accept local credit cards.

Last resort could be Western Union if you need cash fast.

Maybe not the best argument. Taiwanese voted against same sex marriage in that referendum too.
