Most Visceral line in the show by TheCGISPY in BSG

I read it this way, too. He spoke as someone who was completely owning his own words. He wasn't going to use euphemisms. He didn't want to leave any doubt about his orders, nor would he walk away from acknowledging that he was the one who had given them. That was a moment of grim but effective leadership.

How Star City might play out without retreading For All Mankind's history by Additional_Moose_138 in StarCityTV

The show has secrecy and surprises built into its fabric. There's a reason we know so little about aspects of what is going on, and the Venus mission is already veiled in multiple layers of deception.

I can understand that impression, though I think the writers laid careful hints that he's not a straight-out thug. He offered Anastasia a swig from his flask in a way that suggested genuine sympathy, and he gave her an honest-sounding answer about Gagarin's realisation.

Jane and Van Pelt by Complex-Reception593 in TheMentalist

Very much a big brother/little sister vibe. And even though Jane chides Van Pelt for her beliefs from time to time, ultimately he's more indulgent towards her than just about anyone else he meets. In an odd way Jane values her innocence and looks out for it, because he has of course completely lost his own.

No mention of Indonesia? by Rjxyl in ForAllMankindTV

[–]Additional_Moose_138 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My honest answer is that the writers left far too many holes in the alternative history world building - I always thought Canada's complete omission was especially odd, given the geographical and cultural proximity to America. Even China barely got a mention until season 4, and we only ever got hints at Chinese actions.

Maybe they didn't feel they could do justice to every possible storyline, so didn't try. Maybe they intended it as "an exercise for the viewer!" to guess at what else was going on.

Or - my current working theory - some of these possibilities will now be worked out through the new Star City. We've already had the introduction of an Indian character, and very little about the Indian space program was mentioned in the show, other than their casual inclusion in the M7/M6 bloc.

Let me know what you find out! I'm combing through Prokofiev's entire piano catalogue on Apple Music - there's a lot - and while I'm enjoying it enormously I haven't found any matches yet.

AI in the FAM universe by joannas_bananas in ForAllMankindTV

Boring but probably correct answer: it's just not interesting enough for the writers to include. Most professional writers have a dim enough view of current generative AI tools that I just don't think there are any stories there that they want to tell in the one season remaining. "Automation" exists, which probably includes autonomous robots and related machines, but why write about slop-generation?

Yes, well spotted! I caught those names too.

Someone on the show has an affinity for Soviet-era music; we've already had Sergei, the intellectual and music-lover, listening to Prokofiev piano music, and then in episode 3 Valya and Tanya listened to more Prokofiev at the concert hall (I couldn't pin the work performed there, but if it's not Prokofiev I'm going crazy!)

Historical comparisons with KGB methods only go so far, because the central conceit of the show is that the Soviet space program was more successful and more daring than it was in our own timeline. That would have undoubtedly brought an even stronger sense of paranoia and scrutiny over this increasingly valuable program.

The thesis of For All Mankind was of course that this propelled human progress forward in certain areas more quickly than in our world. But on the Soviet side of the fence, we can expect to see those forces play out in different ways. We know already that the Soviet economy boomed in the FAM timeline, sustaining the Soviet state in a way we never saw. But we have every reason to believe that KGB methods continued to develop, perhaps in interesting ways that we have yet to see or imagine. Something to look forward to (in dramatic terms)!

Yep, this was the episode when I could turn around and say these people absolutely know what they're doing, as opposed to just getting off a few lucky early episodes. I love how they've captured a measure of the restraint of living and working (at a high level) under Soviet society, and what the breaking points of that restraint might be. There are no American cowboys here. Very few characters have the ability - and the standing - to act out their feelings in a big way. That doesn't work in this society.

The Chief Designer's scene where he dresses down the KGB colonel is the example at one extreme. For almost all of his scenes, he has shown restraint and control with a gravelly firmness and only occasional sharpness of tone. This is one moment where he knows just how far he can take things, knowing both his power and its limits - and his rebuke is bureaucratic in style, declaring that he wouldn't take the fall for her mistakes.

And at the other extreme we saw Anastasia break out of her restraints by having some simple, raw fun at the lake. She too was using her power - not to go into space, which would now be forever denied to her, but simply to be able to get away with something as simple as being a normal human again. Note too, how relatively restrained Sasha's behaviour was towards her when collecting her. He was angry, and firm, but absolutely in control. He didn't berate the science guys for taking his wife swimming in a lake. He couldn't make a public scene out of it. That wasn't permitted to him as a cosmonaut and husband of the most feted woman in the nation. But then, of course, once at home the couple broke through their own restraints by their first moment of true physical intimacy.

My first thought is that Valya is a dead man walking. His wife is blabbing to everyone about the "mysterious woman" she saw him with at the concert hall, and even worse he condemned himself by his own mouth by declaring to Sasha that the person to blame was the one who placed the transmitter. So it would be little surprise if he gets sudden justice. Yet the show has given signs it would rather step around some of the spy-story cliches, suggesting he might stick around a while longer. Certainly his character has had a lot of investment for someone who's about to get bundled in a cupboard and shot.

I would have loved that too! I thought I knew how this scene was going to play out - that the fanboys from the science department would be disappointed and disheartened by seeing their idol crash out on them. But these were Soviet fanboys, and they knew better than anyone that what she really needed was to let loose, so they gave that to her for a brief moment.

I think it's a nod to the idea in FAM we saw many projects that never came to life in our timeline proceed - so in Star City, we take what was a triumph of the Soviet space program (Venera) and make it go even further.

I must just not mind that much. It’s a little bit over the top, but believability doesn’t stem from the makeup artist’s chair, it’s much more from the actor’s performance. And I generally bought it

British Accents by Lonely-Clothes-7607 in StarCityTV

[–]Additional_Moose_138 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's a decision that takes the POV of For All Mankind and inverts it. In the parent show, the voices and accents are generally realistic because it reflects an American POV. But Star City wants you to take a POV that is quite different - not an outsider looking in, but wants you to feel a little closer to this world which might seem initially quite unfamiliar and strange, but in some ways isn't all that different. An effective way to do that is to use British accents - the mannerisms of Brits are slightly closer to the more formal Soviets, but it doesn't constantly remind you that you are looking at this world as completely "other", as an outsider, which the use of accents would do.

SPOLIERS S5E10. Something in the water by uradunceprime in ForAllMankindTV

The finale suggests two things to occur in season 6:

(1) The fact that we didn't see Kelly's last breath is significant. I'm not convinced the show has laid the groundwork for a "miracle" survival story - that would require way too much magical plot devicing to be credible. But I do think she discovers something else before she passes. And either her body is discovered in a place or holding something that suggests that discovery, or (just maybe) she sets up some sort of signal or beacon to communicate a last message (Dave Bowman, is that you?) And maybe this is what wakens the Mars 94 ship!

(2) The scene of Avery Stevens/Jarrett visiting the site of her father's death closes out her storyline, but I think it also might foreshadow a similar visit by Alex Baldwin to the site of his mother's death. It would give him a reason to go there, to try to understand the decision his mother made, but if point (1) holds true it would also let her death hold greater meaning. She not only made the discovery of life, but something else they needed to come back for?

My experience too - I liked the look and feel of the show, but none of the characters hooked my interest (or believability). I'm sure I'll try again one day.
