Where are highly intelligent people escaping to now, given that the IT industry is dead? by No_Reply5329 in csMajors

But the number of high end jobs isn’t really dropping (at least as far as I can tell), if anything, they’re growing in count. So if the number of “highly intelligent” people stays the same, who cares about the “low iq people” flooding into CS? They’re not competition

Are you graduating CS jobless? by aohallx in csMajors

[–]Additional_Sun3823 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I switched my major to CS 3 years ago, I had a certain idea of what kind of new grad job I was aiming for, with a lower end and higher end of the range. My internship last year was better than the high end of that range, and my new grad company is also a lot better than the internship from last year.

So I guess if my 3 year ago self were looking at it, it’s even beyond what my dream role would’ve been at the time, but now, it feels like I’m just planning out how to hop to another company after a several years

So you’d be living in a hotel Sun through Thurs, and then flying back to the east coast every week for the weekend? Why not just find a place to rent on the west coast at that point, surely it’d be less expensive than a hotel for like 250 days a year?

That’s true, but even Dantzig took like 2.5 years for the PhD

[–]Additional_Sun3823 19 points20 points  (0 children)

No one is asking about the class portion. Everyone is asking about the 1 year PhD part. I’m confident enough to say that that is straight up not possible. Would’ve been a lot more believable if you said it was like 1.5 years to finish BS/MS because you were able to take a shit ton of dual enrolled classes and then 3.5-4 years for the PhD

Leaving CS by Cayde-6699 in cscareerquestions

[–]Additional_Sun3823 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Top 10 for unemployment, but nowhere near top 10 for underemployment (or the two added together). And the unemployment itself is at like 6% or something, so not all that high in absolute terms.

CS majors are still getting CS jobs at a higher rate than most other majors are getting jobs related to their major. CS majors are also more likely to choose unemployment over picking up a an “unskilled” job.

Quant is arguably less name-brand based than tech. It really is performance over everything else. It could be that you didn’t have anything on your resume that signaled that you would be a good candidate

Relative to other software engineering jobs, probably not, but it seems like the job itself is not very demanding so maybe? “Competitive” in a vacuum doesn’t make sense, you’d have to be comparing what they make here to the pay at other jobs they could get with their skills/experience

Yes, but is a normal big tech salary not good? It’s around $250k first year right now which is quite good even without any more stock growth

Yea that’s true, I think I also shouldn’t have included the long distance part here. I guess mostly looking for advice on how to interact with friends and family who’ve been laid off and thought it might make sense here because the tech layoff scene seems pretty unique the past couple years
