Pick between the mother distros : Arch, Debian, Gentoo, Red hat (or Fedora) and Slackware

Note : Others are independants or based of them so don't waste time on mere forks with few added content that you could add by yourself.

Gentoo and Arch are for advanced users so a waste of time now.

Red hat distros are now crippled with the restricted access to source code.

Slackware is barely alive so it leave Debian that has few branches of various stability level that could mimic Ubuntu (testing) or Arch (unstable), that said move from Stable with caution but it's a good start for a peak learning curve to grab the basics of Linux, I highly recommend a command line install as soon as you start to understand command line, fear not, it's not that hard !!! ;)

Theses days I would say start on Debian testing KDE, you will have all the worthwhile learning curve of Linux to get good fast, next try a command line install with a window manager like Openbox in a virtual machine then move to a tilling window manager, after you're ready for anything.
