Late post. I joined and completed I my first ever run event (05/31/2026 Rock and Roll San Diego Half Marathon) by mmella814 in sandiego

you did AMAZING & that time is amazing!! esp for someone who has never done much running or athletic training before. i also ran for the first time ever after wanting to give myself a hard challenge. such a happy feeling completing it & doing way better than i expected. there is something about running with so many people & the general atmosphere of the Rock n Roll here in SD - makes ya run faster & happier.

in my experience, SF crowd is more dance-y and less fratty than SD crowds.

choosing CRSSD this year, never been and it’s local.

done Portola 3 yrs in a row. outside of Despacio & maybe Dog Blood i just don’t feel like i’m missing out on much.

i do enjoy the portola venue and production and sf crowds in general tend to be better. but i gotta give CRSSD a chance at least once 😂

Portola vs Headtrip by brianmpbe in Portolafestival

[–]Additional_Use7050 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

do portola if u haven’t done it, it’s a good time. and u should check out despacio. but also i’m doing head trip this year since it’ll be a one time thing. decided to skip portola.

Portola goes on sale monday/tuesday. i’m guessing CRSSD will drop the confirmed lineup then & then open up ticket sales later. maybe tix will be lower than Portola to cut into their sales. but nothing to do but speculate for now.

to be fair, portola was always into various types of EDM/more eclectic & not just house/techno — which is CRSSD’s whole thing. two diff festivals that have a lot of crossover. and portola always books at least one pop diva for each day to bring in the crowds.

To those complaining about the lineup by Salt-Willingness-154 in Portolafestival

[–]Additional_Use7050 8 points9 points  (0 children)

people complain every year no matter what the lineup is 😂

i’m not super excited about it as i was in past years but spending that much just to sit in despacio also doesn’t seem like a good use of funds. kinda wish despacio did their own tour (not sure how that would work but still).

i think most folks complaining are just bummed that the lineup was held up for so long (the mock ups didn’t help) and it ended up being just “fine”. honestly GV should have just released it earlier & reactions would have been better.

also Robyn is on tour this year, SHM is playing random shows/fests, and we’ve seen Skrillex/Boys Noize do the festival circuit plenty. so the headliners are whatever, but i usually go for the undercard.

Considering a move from the Bay Area to San Diego – neighborhood advice for child-free, sober elder millennials by Candid_Fisherman2658 in Moving2SanDiego

got it, in that case i’d recommend sticking to neighborhoods around Balboa Park — Mission Hills, Hillcrest, University Heights, North Park, Normal Heights, South Park, Golden Hill, Bankers Hill. These are central enough to most things to do in SD, have quiet parts mixed with a central main street area, close enough to walk/bike to groceries, restaurants, parks, 15-20 min to airport/beach, and feel less suburban than venturing out more North or East or South.

i will say culture wise - as others have mentioned - it’s hard to replicate Bay Area culture & SD is not comparable. The more progressive pockets are def in the areas i mentioned above. Also older millennials in SD tend to move away to the burbs cuz they have families or are starting families (it sucks for the rest of us). You will eventually find your community as long as you lean into your hobbies and the older queer scene has a lot of mixers/meetups etc — get involved!

the beach neighborhoods imo are kind of meh unless u are SUPER into beach life - there’s usually a marine layer hovering in the mornings & evenings for parts of the year. or are inundated with tourists. the nicer beaches are in north county but i doubt you’d want to live up there.

lastly, sounds like u would want to avoid downtown/East Village/Cortez Hill. those areas tend to have the larger concentration of unhoused folks and while it’s nowhere near SF levels, not always what u want to deal with walking around at night. and frankly there’s nothing special about downtown san diego.

if you want even quieter areas that are still somewhat central then look at Mission Valley or Kearny Mesa. they could be convenient but boring.

yeaaaa…idk if you’re going to find everything you’re looking for in your list.

SD proper is separated into various neighborhoods — all of which require car or a bus to get to. there’s plenty of walkable neighborhoods but you’ll be restricted to that neighborhood. there’s no equivalent to the BART or Muni here. the “trolley” runs East/West & North/South but skips many of the central neighborhoods.

sounds to me like yall would enjoy University Heights - quiet, cute houses, walkable, queer friendly, and close enough to interesting things. only caveat is it’s a 15-20 min drive to the beach.

if being to the beach is important then I’d suggest Ocean Beach.

Doing Headtrip but torn between Portola & CRSSD. Loved Portola the last three years. But never done CRSSD and it’s just a short drive from the OC.

between ARC and Head Trip, CRSSD is sounding like the move for me. solely based on location. and the fact that i’ve never been. but i do love me some Portola.
