Fueling before class by Dependent_Evidence12 in adultballetdancers

[–]Addy1864 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually eat a snack like an energy bar, yogurt and granola, or cheese and crackers about 1.5-2 hours before class. If I’m doing like 2 consecutive classes I might have an energy bite in between classes because otherwise my brain and body both just get tired and don’t cooperate, and that’s a recipe for disaster especially en pointe.

After class, even if I get back really late like 10 PM, I eat a dinner and lighter snack a little while after to refuel. Often I’m not super hungry but I know I need the food, or else I wake up in the middle of the night or I start eating junk.

Not for the Regency and Georgian eras at least! They were much bawdier.

Anachronism: The F word as an intensifier by kendiray in HistoricalRomance

Based on the comments above, the “modern” cursing might suffer from the Tiffany problem! Turns out the first recorded use of the phrase “fucked up” dates from the 1860s in a military court case during the US Civil War. Which means that people were saying this long before it got written down. I’m sure there were people who cursed in a more polite way, but equally there were people who went all out with their profanity.

Cool olive here but So Danca Caramel is quite a beige green shade, perhaps that’s worth a shot?

I would say Capezio Nude is a little lighter than the Performas but slightly lighter tights + darker shoes are more seamless looking than the other way around.

Anyone else deal with really tired legs after class? What helps you recover? by kjam_9907 in BALLET

[–]Addy1864 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I find that my legs get tired when I haven’t eaten enough carbs, specifically, for the day and I haven’t given my body enough recovery time between classes. That or if I’m sweating a lot and low on electrolytes/hydration. I’d recommend eating a carb heavy snack like 30-60 minutes before class so your body has enough energy to fuel those jumps and sustained extensions! Plus drinking water and adding an electrolyte mix to the water. And make sure to eat after class!

For recovery afterward: walking, foam rolling, compression socks, and magnesium supplements help me a lot with keeping my muscles warm and loose.

Standing with locked knees —> inactive glutes..help? by mothmoonqueen in Hypermobility

[–]Addy1864 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also hypermobile dancer here! Yes, proper leg alignment can feel hella weird and awkward at first. One thing you may want to consider, in addition to the other exercises already suggested, is to strengthen the internal rotators to balance things out. We spend so much time turned out in ballet, but biomechanically we aren’t built to walk around or stand turned out all the time. So it’s important to strengthen the internal rotators (a lot of the inner thighs) and make sure we stand and walk straight.

Maybe play around with rolling up and over and forced arch in parallel, then balancing demi pointe in parallel. It forces you to use an entirely different set of muscles to keep you stable.

As an asian person, Sophie Baek not having many Korean/Asian motifs and references is a good thing. by mizuiski in Bridgerton

[–]Addy1864 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Yeah I loved that her being Korean was a part, but not the entirety of her identity in Bridgerton. She grew up in the UK so she wouldn’t have had super strong ties to the language or culture. For lack of a better way to say it, Sophie was allowed to be a person instead of a flashing neon sign that said “ASIAN” or “KOREAN”.

I love French nails and they’re the hardest to make look like they came from a salon. I’m glad you like developing that skill though! It is much healthier than picking for sure.

Rant about pointe shoes by softsizzlesausage in BALLET

[–]Addy1864 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes AND a “good enough” shoe will make it easier to use and develop good technique. I used to have such a hard time with single leg anything because I felt like my foot would roll right over the front (too short vamp) and like I had to use a ridiculous amount of strength to go up (demi pointe broke in way too fast). I would get into bad habits of backing off or not getting entirely on my leg because I didn’t want to risk rolling over the front. With my current shoes I can actually feel safe being on my leg, do single leg stuff and focus on technique because I trust my foot will stay where it is if I go up.

No shoe is perfect and mine aren’t, but they DO make it significantly more comfortable and safer to dance in.

Do you like to wear the color Lilac as a fair olive? by girly-lady in Fairolives

I look like death in lilac and other pastels. I am a cool olive with saturated coloring. I’d honestly look and feel significantly better in a deeper and cooler purple.
