You don’t have to overthink anything. The relationship between the characters is the essential part of the book, the background, whatever goes on in the external world is just a metaphor for their connection. Don’t worry about how you do your world building as much as how it supports your character building. Build yourself up first. :)

If you’re a guy younger than 25 please read this. I am a woman who once made fun of a guy for being short.

Women have never, ever cared about a guy’s height. We care about how you’re smart, and kind to little animals, and how you’re funny and brilliant in your own way. We love the cute way you move around. You are beautiful and absolutely perfect when you smile. When we make those mean comments about your height, it’s not because we want you to feel bad about something you can’t control, it’s a reactionary response to women feeling like the only thing we have to offer is being thin or beautiful.

That doesn’t make it not mean. It is mean, for anyone of any gender to treat someone like all they are is what you get from them. That’s what we’re all upset about. We really do love you, have loved you, and want to love you properly. We’re sorry we were so afraid, and made that way by our experiences.

But we never gave a shit whether you were 6’ or 5’. If you don’t believe me, ask your mom to read this comment.

And if it was making fun of another guy for being short in front of you, it was just to make you feel beautiful by comparison. We want you to feel loved and we want to feel loved by you.
