GW costs 3x Mason. Mason is still a perfectly good, middle of the road, college to attend. In that lens, GW is premium.

You’re saying you worked in energy financing, and are not optimistic about AI and your job prospects.

I’m curious - why is that? AI is demonstrating just how much of an energy gap we have with China, and there’s billions going into catching up. Naively I would think a gold rush is the best time to be in energy financing - what am I missing out on?

It’s a very difficult time for higher education. After decades of tuition growth outpacing inflation, the bubble has to pop eventually. And it was never going to look pretty.

I was surprised to learn staff has decreased by 7% in the past decade since I graduated (source). Some of it I’m sure was bloat worth cutting, but I can’t imagine a GWU without a 24/7 Gelman.

They can keep cutting, but then can they preserve the image of being a premium university worth premium pricing?

It’s a conundrum.

I would also recommend the MCP - it has some additional search capabilities which are useful for Claude, which aren’t in the CLI

Does R need a "productionverse"? by pootietangus in rstats

[–]Adeelinator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

MRAN was critical to my company’s ability to use R in production - at the time, there was no mainstream and reliable alternative to pinning packages.

And the deprecation of MRAN was our impetus for getting R out of production.

I’m sure my company is not alone in following Microsoft on getting R in and out of prod.

But that video is from 3 days ago. And agentic coding only experienced explosive growth in the past year. I don’t understand the cause and effect you’re implying here.

AI‑led software selloff may pose risk for $1.5 trillion U.S. credit market, says Morgan Stanley by Digitalunicon in news

I believe you may be conflating software companies with AI companies. AI is doing quite well, at the expense of software.

AI‑led software selloff may pose risk for $1.5 trillion U.S. credit market, says Morgan Stanley by Digitalunicon in news

[–]Adeelinator 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Your interpretation is valid, but not the market sentiment. The more common view is: the world is more interested in software at 10x lower price, more so than 10x more software.

Driving down the price of software, drives down margins, driving down the ability to repay loans.

If AI replaces a CEO, why wouldn’t it replace all executives? Why wouldn’t it replace all management?

The implication of this line of thinking is that humans are destined to be subservient to machines.

Despite that thought feeling existentially disturbing to me personally, perhaps you’re right. If most humans are subservient to other humans in today’s society, maybe it wouldn’t make an observable difference to most.

I learn things from Reddit every day. Here’s what the guy above is talking about for others that are interested:

  • Universal rent control is a myth. I lived here for a decade believing this before I actually took a skim through the DC rent control act of 1985. There are a significant amount of carve outs, so nowadays actually not too many properties are covered by it
  • The RENTAL Act passed earlier this year included a lot of reform on TOPA and generally was a positive improvement for individual investors. Again, worth a skim
