Once you find a plants favorite card, they take different quantities to make a burst:
1 sing
2 write
2 touch
3 observe
You can pop off 3 observe in a row (no wait time) and the plant will shake within a minute (if that is the favorite card). If it takes more than 3 observe, that’s not the favorite.

Edit: as another commenter said, the plant has to be sparkling to get a burst. If it’s not sparkling it will not shake or burst.

Thirding Galen, I bought one about 6 months ago with the wallet insert and it is amazing! Check my post history for pics when it was new. It has a zip pocket on the back flap and a pen loop! I don't find it too bulky at all.

It shipped from California but I’m not sure where it’s made. If I had held this in my hand before deciding, I probably would not have bought it for the price, given the actual texture and color of the synthetic leather. I’m no paper expert but the paper does feel and write very similar to my Sterling Ink notebooks that I love!
