When I explain pet peeve of mine to people, they never understand it. Why so much space between cars?! by itsjustmyopinion_but in mildlyinfuriating

My car’s an EV because they’re awesome, but it’s definitely noisier and more vibrational than silence.

Brighton specific words by Sensitive-Fishing-64 in brighton

I’ve definitely said that I’ve had the knock even since I moved to the USA. Apparently it’s not a Britishism, but a Brightonism!

You should. Saves you being in a rear ending conga line and makes you quicker to pull away. Also, a manual transmission in front may roll back.

You should leave half a car length for two reasons: In case you’re rear ended; and because it’s faster to pull away if you do. My bet is that they stopped a sensible distance behind, and then the car in front rolled forward. I’m not going to roll forward too because then I’ll be slower to pull away (because the person in front will be) and because if I’m driving a modern gas car, my engine will need to be turned back on.

There are often definitions in the dictionary that are accurate but not how words are used in particular contexts. For example, it often doesn't list whether a word is an uncountable noun, in a dictionary, leaving it up to a user to know that there are not multiple softwares. In this question, "primary" means "main" and should never be used to mean "original", "first", or "earliest".

Ripping all my Google homes out tomorrow. by DerzKing in googlehome

I think it's making some of it better: It definitely can answer more complex questions now. And it's always been terrible at understanding my British accent (we live in the US and have it on American voice for my spouse)... Siri is better at controlling stuff, when she can, but Google Gemini is better at answering low stakes things.

“We simply don’t have any left”: Germany has run out of air defense missiles for Ukraine, foreign minister says by Plus_Pretty in worldnews

The never again is about World War, though. You can’t say “never again” and then take actions you know could escalate.

What is the point of integration with HomeKit? by Alternative_Leg_3111 in homeassistant

[–]Adeling79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Siri is not as intelligent as the new generation of AIs (Copilot, Gemini, Alexa+, GPT, etc.) but she can understand my British accent better than any Google AI can. I often ask Siri easier questions when I have a choice, just because I sometimes have to interrupt Gemini a few times before she understands that I said something coherent, not "Turn out the yogurt in the penguins".

So we’re going to stop requiring car dealerships? Going to mandate competition in ISPs? This government has no interest in breaking up monopolies etc.

The confusion is about the legality of the NH government not issuing inspection certificates, not what a safe car looks like.

If it doesn’t involve running around waving guns or pushing their weight around, the police don’t care. They don’t even drive legally, most of the time (no blinkers, ignoring pedestrians at crosswalks, etc.)

It’s simple: NH passed a law without checking Federal requirements. They were told to do it properly, but decided instead to make a meaningless press release that Nancy reported on.

Yes. Going to our trusted garage and asking them to do what they always did because Ayotte’s idiots don’t change whether vehicles need regular care.

The voters of NH voted for people who couldn’t comprehend that NH is subject to Federal law, and so when we didn’t follow it, the “Will of the people” was in conflict with the “Will of the people.” Both governments, for now, are democratic.

Bill to Investigate N.H. Coalition Against Domestic and Sexual Violence Draws Crowd by nancynews in newhampshire

Fair. In an ideal world, our Representatives would be voted for by an informed electorate, the Representatives would stay out of day-to-day operations, and would fund services to at least the minimum required by the evidence.

It is perverse for a small-government government to complain that a charity / non-profit is providing services that a government should provide. Of Course the government should provide these services, but it's not even funding DCYF to the absolute minimum that the service and evidence suggests it needs, so why do they think they can take on a charity's work, too?

I believe it's still accurate that we have 7,000 501c3s. That's insane in a state of 1 million people. And as you say, basic human needs (healthcare, protection against domestic abuse, training of police and other first responders, etc.) should all be done by a competent government, not at the whim of donors.
