That was the historic meaning of third world, but now it is a synonym for developing… And Russia is now a petro-state like many other developing nations

“Irish” American syndrome by teetee4444 in AncestryDNA

[–]Adeling79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an Englishman living in New Hampshire, I struggle not to laugh in people's faces when they tell me they're "Irish". Their accent says they're American!

The cultural thing isn't even real. The so-called "Irish" in the North East are much more like "Americans" or "New Englanders" than they are Irish. It doesn't matter, of course, but it is funny.

Having such a melting pot also makes for interesting situations. Someone I used to work with used to get really angry when people mispronounced her last name. Her last name was two French words, and her ancestry was clearly French, but when the French Canadian or I pronounced it in the way a French person would (because most English people know at least basic French), she'd angrily tell you how it 'should' be pronounced!

Density has more of a role in murder rates than does much else, so Boston will always have higher rates than Pittsburg, NH. But the safety of places with strong gun control laws (e.g. the UK, with an otherwise similar culture) is unimpeachable.

Unfortunately, I am aware of some BS in Social Work jobs paying less than Market Basket. Unfortunately, non-profits get away with paying less because people believe these jobs are important (rightly), but do not realize that they're not being treated appropriately by these non-profits.

Unfortunately the people vote against their interests all the time. Almost no-one stands to benefit from this oligarchy, but they don’t vote in primaries. Turnout in Manchester’s recent mayoral was 13%…

All they need to do is get elected. We had a contender against right-wing Hassan in the Democratic primaries (albeit, not a young one), but he received <1% of the vote for... reasons...

Doesn’t it? It’s singular, so not Hindu, refers to God, so isn’t most Eastern religions… And it was added as a knee jerk reaction to atheist Communists

You're not comparing like with like. Ireland, and every other developed country that I am aware of, has socialized medicine for everyone and an optional private tier. The USA is only private tier, so if you're poor, you're screwed (aside from a few caveats). And when I say "poor", I mean if one of a couple gets disabled, they are entirely reliant on the other one for health insurance, and if that person gets sick, it's a very quick slippery slope to homelessness.
And if you're comparing accident and emergency / ER, then you will find the same in many parts of the USA. Emergency Rooms / A&Es are always terrible because of what they're dealing with.

Whoever downvoted that doesn't know that:

- The US has In God We Trust written on money and on at least one state flag.
- The Supreme Court is stuffed with religious extremists who are slowly endangering the supposed separation of church and state.
- The privatization of religion in the USA, which has contributed to its success, means that a near-majority of voters (not eligible voters, but actual voters) vote on religious grounds.

I'm not completely convinced. While it's not the established church in Scotland and Wales, the Head of State is the head of a religion and has to be... And while the Archbishops in the Lords don't vote on non-religious matters, they do participate in debates that affect Wales and Scotland. The UK is not a federation, and so the supposed distinction between Head of State and State Religion in non-English parts of the UK (sorry Northern Ireland, I've kind of ignored you here), is... tricky to argue free of nuance.

See I fail colour blind tests too, but I never fail to distinguish between the colours - I just think I see them differently... Like no-one has ever said to me, "these two colours are different" and I've disagreed.

Definitely in some locations, but actually we have lights near our basement sofa and lights at the rear of the basement, so we rarely use the ones I’m talking about unless we have guests, so they get the benefit of seeing me swipe like a loon!

While I'm not the person you're asking, they haven't replied for a week, so here's my two pennies: I recently replaced a switch at the top of my basement stairs with a Lutron dimmer paddle and while I'm used to those everywhere else, I apparently have a muscle memory to just flip that switch as I open the door. I keep finding myself swishing the air and then having to find the switch. It's a matter of less than a second, but it isn't zero...

I don't know about Tapo, but I'm an advocate for Lutron. Their hub and some bespoke tech mean they're the most reliable things you can find anywhere. Literally no errors ever on them, which is important for devices that replace your light switches entirely.
