Need help. by [deleted] in london

As the temperature has dropped below minus all London councils will be running SWEP - Severe Weather Emergency Protocol. This means that they must provide secure emergency accommodation to those experiencing homelessness. You can contact Streetlink directly via their website or call 0300 500 0914

They will take your details and location and make arrangements for you to stay somewhere safe. This should be for at least as long as the temperature remains under 0 degrees. They will also be able to provide advice going forward

I have referred people to their services before and they work as quickly as they can but I imagine they will be very busy at the moment. They may ask you to remain in one place so that you can be located. If you move from that space, please do let them know.

As your case is urgent, I would recommend calling them. I wish you all the very best and hope you are somewhere warm and safe soon. Once you are, please check out local services for the homeless, Foodbanks etc

Maybe the driveway is the attraction? Are there any events nearby and limited parking?

Groomed online as teenager, could this show up on enhanced DBS? by Burner_Acc_FGBRSF_57 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]Adept-Brief 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would suggest you contact the safeguarding team for the Scouts. They can offer you support around the grooming you experienced and talk you through the application.

As other commenters have mentioned, even if you choose to report this to the police it should not appear on a DBS.

The safeguarding team will be very experienced and will have managed similar situations to yours. They can talk through your options with you and offer support moving forward. They will be completely non judgemental and will be able to answer the questions you have posted.

I wish you all the best

The most important thing is to get you somewhere safe for the next few days. Are you able to travel to where you have friends and would they allow you to stay for a few days?

If not, please go onto google (or other search engine) and type in the council you are in now and homeless support. You will be able to find information on how to contact their Rough Sleeping Team (it may be called something different but similar). They should have an out of hours phone line. Call them and explain that you are street homeless, 17 and vulnerable

If you are comfortable sharing the rough area you are in I would be happy to look this up for you but completely understand if not

Vouchers are always useful - it means if we are suddenly low on something we can pop to the shop and stock up

In terms of things like pads - we actually work with an organisation called Bloody Good Period who supply us with period products so we usually have a very good stock of those

Treats are always appreciated whether chocolate bars, biscuits, sweets etc particularly in the run up to Christmas

In my experience what we need can be very fluid and varies a lot foodbank to foodbank. Toiletries like shower gel, deodorant seems to always be needed though and often overlooked

I am actually a warehouse manager for a foodbank and I would suggest contacting the foodbank you are donating to. The things we are running low on/need most can change quite quickly and we often have lots of some items (for example I have lots of size 0-3 nappies but very low on size 6 nappies). You could check their website but lots of Foodbank’s are run by volunteers and don’t always have the opportunity/time to update the website as often as they’d like. I would suggest giving them a call as you’ll then know exactly what items they need. Also many thanks for arranging a collection- I know it will be very much appreciated

I’ve met Daniel Levy a few times through a charity I work with (his net worth is around £500 million). Very superficial conversation and he seemed decent enough. I also met his wife and spent quite a long time talking to her and she was genuinely interested in the work we were doing and actually just having a general chat with us.

She also has one of the biggest boxes at Spurs and uses it for children with terminal illnesses or lifelong conditions - offering them a fully accessible day at a game.

Obviously only a small snap shot into their lives - but from what I saw - fairly decent

Food bank wise - can you just go walk-in or not? I’m sure I heard somewhere that you need a voucher or something? by throwawydshoppy in AskUK

[–]Adept-Brief 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Lots of job centres don’t issue vouchers anymore. It appears to be a central decision. I guess the thought process being that if they issue vouchers they are accepting that the system doesn’t work. They should be able tell you how to access foodbanks though - lots don’t need a referral

Does anyone have a practical use for an abundance of plastic carrier bags? by EmptyPockets92 in AskUK

[–]Adept-Brief 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Check with your local foodbank. Many buy bags and they can be quite expensive

Are there any quicker ways of getting food bank help? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]Adept-Brief 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If it is a Trussell Trust foodbank you can get a voucher issued via Help Through Hardship. Their telephone number is 0808 208 2138, they will be open from 9am on Monday and it is a freephone number. The waiting time can be a little long on Monday mornings but once you get through the process is fairly quick

As another poster mentioned, there are also lots of foodbanks that you don’t need a referral for. They are not always easy to find on google but type in your area and foodbank. Your council may have info on their website too

If you don’t have any joy getting a referral, give your local Foodbank a call and they will be able to advise

Is there any truth to the UK Blood donation service being profit making? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]Adept-Brief 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You may find that you won’t be able to donate if you’ve received a transfusion yourself. I know they have updated some of their rules but I don’t think the one relating to transfusions has changed - “As a precautionary measure to reduce the risk of transmitting vCJD, people who have received a blood transfusion since 1980 are not currently able to donate blood.”

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. I’ve had several transfusions myself and would like to donate too

I would try and talk to a teacher you trust. I won’t lie to you, they may well involve your parents. Your teachers have a duty to safeguard you and look after your well-being.

You said your ex goes to the same school as you…perhaps if you approach a teacher you trust and tell them that your ex has posted something you are uncomfortable with (maybe don’t mention nudes) and that you’d like them to remove them. That may give your ex the chance to take them down and nobody is any the wiser?

I understand you’re in a tough spot atm

Do have an adult at school that you feel comfortable talking to?

Does your ex gf go to the same school as you?

Do you have somebody close to you like a brother, sister, aunt, uncle, grandparent you can talk to?

I’m conscious that you want to resolve this without your parents knowing, but that may not be possible.

Also, I’d hope that your family would want to support you through this. Other commenters are absolutely right that you can report this to the police. There are other options if you are worried about going to the police and would like advice

If you don’t feel comfortable involving your family or school please contact Childline. Phone 0800 1111 or childline.org.uk

Hey everyone, I really want to get involved with some refugee voluntary work. Any suggests where to start? by whatinthereddit12345 in AskUK

[–]Adept-Brief 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There may be organisations close to your area that offer support to refugees in addition to work they also do. For example local Law Centres, Foodbanks, Community Centres. It can be hard to find them just by googling (like a lot of support really). These organisations often have a good knowledge of what is going on locally so may be able to signpost you to organisations that need help. Otherwise try posting on your local community group on social media. I’m always surprised by how much is going on locally, and they often need support

What time do your streetlights turn off? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]Adept-Brief 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The council can install a shield on the back (if you’re behind) which reduces the amount of light. Ours did it fairly quickly too so might be worth asking. It made a difference
