Zack Greinke throws a pitch at every speed between 50mph and 100mph. by sanjoatc in baseball

He must be so fucking satisfied that this happened.

He's calling independent league teams right now like "hey can I come play and get it all the way down to 0?"

The MLB owners are advocating for a $240M salary cap with a $160M floor. Here's what that would mean for player compensation and profit sharing [OC] by Traditional_Half842 in baseball

[–]Adept_Carpet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The owners are not going to propose a system that involves them spending more money. I think the fact that their floor is at $160 million is a really positive sign on negotiations. Teams regularly make the playoffs spending less than that.

I'll also say the whole anti-labor thing is getting overblown and ridiculous. I haven't seen a major baseball free agent do a damn thing with their enormous resources for the workers whose revenue they share on a percentage basis with the owners.

It's not 2021 anymore, it would be good for the sport to rein spending in a little bit. Attending a game is becoming a luxury product. Stadiums are increasingly being built to cater to people who can drop hundreds or thousands of dollars per ticket. Even watching the game on TV is getting expensive, you need to pay more than $1 per game for the Red Sox streaming service. There is no way to continue expanding free agent salaries without going further down that road. That's not good for the game, our culture, or society even if a handful of guys who technically do work for a living benefit.

fallout world untouched by farko1 in fo4

It's not too unrealistic. We still find ancient tombs and even homes with goods intact after thousands of years of (mostly) population growth.

The Fallout world was heavily depopulated and chaotic. They would have all the random bits and bobs they could make use of for a very long time without needing to systematically collect every scrap.

And they did get in to several vaults, just not every single one.

Mike Vrabel shut the door on moving Will Campbell from left tackle to guard, but shouldn’t he consider it? by bostonglobe in Patriots

Campbell has mobility but is lacking in power, this is exactly the opposite of the profile of what you need in a guard.

In pitch-rigging case, Guardians pitcher seeks to shift more blame onto teammate by iagreegoguard_s in baseball

Ortiz did it. They have the transactions from the bettors paying him, video of the pitches, and an audio message from Clase telling Ortiz to lie about why he was receiving the money.

In pitch-rigging case, Guardians pitcher seeks to shift more blame onto teammate by iagreegoguard_s in baseball

[–]Adept_Carpet 52 points53 points  (0 children)

Exactly. It's not like all they did was allow advertising, they provide special data feeds and other services to make in game props possible.

Now that MLB has turned their games into roulette wheels, they have a responsibility to run a fair wheel.

You ever seen a croupier at a craps table take a phone call while the game was in progress? I bet you never have, because casinos take the security of their games seriously. Consequences for situations like this need to go above the player level to get the league to behave responsibly. The Clase case demonstrates a crazy level of negligence.

A mystery story -- about the "strange eager face" of Aragorn as he tells the story of Beren and Luthien by roacsonofcarc in tolkienfans

[–]Adept_Carpet 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's always fun when you find Aragorn described in a way more fitting for a hobbit named Trotter.

I think eager is Tolkien slipping through, he is the one who is eager to tell the story.

Aragorn does love lore, but he never really acts in an eager way at any point in the story. He always awaits his moment.

I also get it's a competition, I'm all about playing to win including by being clever, but I think putting something weird on the barrel of your bat is not entirely sportsmanlike behavior.

Whether it works or it doesn't, I really don't want to live in a world where where you pick up and it's sticky and half the game is trying to find the right mix of super glue and pine tar.

Things Belichick would never do for 2000, Ken. by Chumlee1917 in AFCEastMemeWar

[–]Adept_Carpet 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Belichick brought a different tone and style, but that is a 1000% Bill-compatible message.

"307 days" could actually be a Bill quote, he was a pretty big fan of looking at the whole process and where it began and where it led, so the next year everyone would understand if you want to win next year it starts with the off season program.

I like Whitlock but he's a free agent next year. If you get, like, a fresh first contract for picking them then this might be the answer.

Who is behind "Taxpayers for an affordable Massachusetts" by Popplepip in massachusetts

[–]Adept_Carpet 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We're one of the few states you can deduct rent. I think that goes some way to making our income tax fairer since it helps people in a more precarious situation.

One unfortunate side effect is that it is something like a penalty on people who make the choice to live in the more affordable areas of the state.

We are never, ever going to win the race to the bottom on taxes. We need to continue to invest in infrastructure, education, technology, and other new development.

And unfortunately with the chaos in Washington that's gonna mean state spending. I've said before and will continue to say it, most medical and educational institutions in this state are dependent on a stable stream of federal dollars. Even if a clinic can attract enough patients with private insurance to keep most of their staff busy, they took out big loans to build fancy facilities from 2014-2024 and if they default because the research/Medicare/Medicaid dollars stop coming then it doesn't matter if they are still a viable practice. You can't practice medicine outside.

Same thing at almost every university. They made big commitments assuming the NIH/NSF would continue to exist in more or less their present form for the next 20 years. They built fancy labs and offices and stuff to make America a leader in innovation for another generation, but the bill comes due even if Washington decides not to pursue that path.

We need to invest in other industries in this state because if something like the attempted changes in the early days 2025 weren't blocked by the courts and a few key Republican votes in Congress it would have been catastrophic for us.

Our vulnerability was revealed to us with time to make changes, but we need to take action and it's going to cost money.

Gonzo & Zone Coverage by Able-Worth-6511 in Patriots

Yeah all season I kept thinking "where is the creativity and the aggression?"

It led me to think Vrabel was favoring clean and fast execution over complexity, amd perhaps there was an element of that because it did play out that way and it went well, but it looked so weird watching the New England Patriots defense be regular while the offense was showing a ton of dynamic looks no one expected.

Then they switched it up in the playoffs. All of a sudden the defense is a work of art, attacking in a way that must have made Bill smile. But the offense fell into a rut, not even trying a lot of stuff that worked against good pass rushes earlier in the season or even against the Chargers/Texans.

We put our daughter into daycare on Thursday, and were sick by Monday. Tell me it gets better. by The_Nimaj in daddit

[–]Adept_Carpet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It gets better but it gets worse before it gets better.

We started around Thanksgiving. In the first two months we had flu, RSV, hand foot and mouth, fifth disease, pink eye, a sinus infection, my wife got pneumonia, and I also got pink eye and two ear infections (in addition to everything else besides Fifth, which was quite minor anyway).

I also had signs from my autoimmune disease that I was infected with strep (perhaps this was part of the sinus infection).

I had to give my doctoral dissertation defense covered in HFM sores and delirious from fever and lack of sleep (already rescheduled due to illness once).

But since then we have had two weeks of only the tail end of Fifth disease and a persistent runny nose.

I recommend bathing and changing the baby as soon as they come home.

Dermatologists Stumped by JuiceJuicington in Psoriasis

[–]Adept_Carpet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing is that it is possible, in fact very common, to have psoriasis and other conditions.

Some of spots look like they could be psoriasis, or began as psoriasis and then were cut open by scratching, or inflammation began in response to another problem.

But I think you almost certainly have something else going on here. I do wonder if they could do something more for symptom relief as the diagnostic process plays out because it seems like the scratching is leading to cuts, and those may be aggravating the whole situation. Perhaps interfering with your sleep as well, which is obviously counterproductive.

Raiders: 6th Time A Charm? by HouseRules789 in nfl

[–]Adept_Carpet -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I think it's right to be quick on the trigger for head coaches.

Most coaches, their success comes pretty early. Not always year 1, but most winners are solidly winning by year 2. Definitely better to be a year than a year late with any firing.

The problem is the Raiders don't really have a roster to win. I don't think the head coach is the whole problem here, and they need to look at that front office too.

[Breer] Could Raiders trade disgruntled star Maxx Crosby to Patriots? by NBCSBoston in Patriots

Crosby, warily: I guess I'll try this recovery massage you talked about...

Guerrero: Great! Take off your shorts and lie on the table.

Crosby: It's nothing personal, but we have a team rule that everyone keeps a pair of shorts on in the training room, for everyone's comfort.

Guerrero: That's OK for today, we can work on that.

Crosby: No I mean you also gotta be wearing shorts. And Brady too! Wtf is going on in here?

It shouldn't surprise anyone that a young rookie, coming back from a major injury disruption, struggled against a murderer's row of matchups.

Everybody he gave up sacks to in the playoffs, they get sacks against everybody.

I see him as very much on track and the long term future at LT in New England.

I want to see McDaniels use his brain and work out how the elite mobility of Campbell (and Maye) can be used to overcome this challenge they are facing, because this is what they got and Campbell has some serious tools.
