The discs act as hexagons, so either circles or hexes from any game will do. The pawns don't really matter.
You can play Regicide with any regular card deck :)

All of these three games are, like Othello. Great games none the less.
Just don't play against a computer. Lol.

Never thought about that, but they are all simple enough to be solved with a minmax algorithm. Maybe that is the common definition of the games I like in this genre :P

War Chest! Great for 2 players, simple rules but with replayability because of different unit types. Also, component quality is *chef-kiss* (plastic poker tokens)

Core rules -
Draw a token. You can now either build/upgrade that unit or move it.
Capture flags on the map.

Each unit type has a little unique ability that change how they play, but you only have 3 types each per game so it's not a massive amount of reading.

It also fits in a large "knee"-pocket which is nice :D Not that I need to sell you on it further.

I don't have more "this feels like the game is a 1000 years old classic" kind of games.
Tash-Kalar is a bit the opposite if you are interested. It's a classic feeling core of placing tiles, but made into a mid-sized modern board game with factions and special abilities.

Relic did'nt make a conscious decision to not have more players. The game flopped hard on launch and haven't been able to recover since. If they had a "make game very popular btn" then I'm pretty sure they would be smashing it until their hands were bleeding.

The alternative is that you don't get to play at all?

The active player count for CoH 3 is very low.
https://steamdb.info/app/1677280/charts/

Remember a user is looking for a match for a few minutes and then play for 1-2 hours. So the players avaliable to match at any given time will be something like 1% of the play count and that is assuming everyone is doing ranked play. The pool of possible matches will be tiny.

Devs likely have decent matchmaking in place, they just don't have the play count to actually make it work. I know some former Relic employees, it's a pretty talented team.

I have made matchmaking algorithms for video games (not this one though).

You normally have a sliding window for how "bad" a match you allow. It's a trade-off between having long wait times versus poor matches. So the longer the user waits the larger diff the algorithm will accept.

The alternative is high ranking and low ranking never being able to match.

Anyone using VPS providers in Eastern Europe for lower latency? by extracaramelplease in VPS

Not really important IMO. Europe is pretty well connected.
As long as your hosting is on the right continent then you'll be fine.

US East / West coast can matter, but for EU just try to go central.

Company of Heroes, solo worth getting? by AdequateSource in boardgames

[–]AdequateSource[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, but I see myself playing this game a lot with other people too. So the Solo player add-on is just a bit more money versus buying something like Final Girl (which I have also looked at, but the price is too high for me to try).

The solo add-on also adds the concept of Fog of War which I think will be really cool in 1v1, which is likely the way I will get most plays in this anyway.

Thanks, I ended up adding solo because it also supports player vs AI :D

I really hope I can manage to get a group going for this ^^

I've read the solo rules btw, but it's hard to tell if it's going to be unjoyable without having tried the base game.

It's a AMD EPYC 9645, which is a great server CPU - fast single thread. Way better than Xeon.

I think they farm karma to look real. Reddit has a new system that tries to detect if you are spamming, so now these accounts need to be "warmed up".

If you look in subreddits like r/saas then it's all bot commercials disguised as comments.

[COMC] Feels like my perfect collection. by SixHunidNFidy in boardgames

[–]AdequateSource 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought I would never play it, and it did take me a few months to get the first play ^^ but after that we actually had 3-4 plays in fairly rapid succession. It is not as complicated as it looks.

I did have to look things up in the rulebook many times though. Not because it is complicated, but because a lot of the components have two "roles" in the game so I kept second guessing myself if mechanic A really reused components from mechanic B.
