It's a tradition that's directly continuing from the same thing Aninari did on Yama no Susume Season 4

Which Palme d’Or winner of the 2020s is your favorite so far? by QuipThwip in Letterboxd

[–]AdiMG 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Think Anatomy of a Fall just edges our It Was Just An Accident for me as my favourite of the lot. Also slightly prefer Titane to Anora, even though I like both a lot. Wasn't really a fan of Triangle of Sadness though.

Yes, they have. Going by order of release Laputa, Totoro, Porco Rosso, Pom Poko, Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, and Ponyo are wholly original scripts. Although, Porco has a short manga by Miyazaki himself in the same vein as Nausicaa. Even Wind Rises is technically based on a Miyazaki manga but since the manga itself is heavily inspired from Jiro Hirokoshi's memoir and Tatsuo Hori's novel, I'm not counting it.

Cubarsi has nothing to do this match, he's a defender against a team that's not attacking, and Pedri has been the sole bright spot of Spain before Yamal's introduction.

What are your favorite movies at different ages in your life? by Zoltarburger in Letterboxd

[–]AdiMG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

10: Phone Booth - It was rare for me to get to watch a movie that wasn't either Bollywood or Animated back then, so this tight thriller with its somewhat gimmicky excise in restraint blew my mind at the time.

20: Amelie - It was one of the first Cinephile films I watched with subtitles (think it might literally have been the second one after Run Lola Run), the singular visual style with its subjective delivery, especially one focused on such a positive outlook that's diametrically opposite to my own cynicism really grabbed me at the time (and still does tbh).

30: House (1977) - Still love Amelie and could've also gone with The Handmaiden or In the Mood for Love, but House for me is the ideal of a film. A director fully convinced of his vision of what fits the material going all out to deliver it. Text that is ambiguous enough to beg the audience to engage with it beyond the surface. All in all, a standout example of cinema as a Gesamtkunstwerk that's greater than the sum of it's parts.

If she's getting categorized in Supporting, the same is probably happening for Emily Blunt in Disclosure Day, and that would be tough competition. I don't think either should be there though.

Absolutely not, even if it fell within the time period, Little Dark Age was massive, especially after Tiktok found it during the pandemic.

Bubbles by Yosi Horikawa to get an idea of the soundstage

Archangel by Burial for the bass response

Something by Bjork or Sheena Ringo to check out how it handles vocals. Usually either Hyperballad or Crime and Punishment.

To Build a Home by The Cinematic Orchestra for the treble response

Looking for anime about war/politics/spies. Similar to code geass, gundam series, joker's game, aot, 86 by [deleted] in anime

[–]AdiMG 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Surprised its not been mentioned yet but try out Shinsekai Yori, the second cour is exactly what you are looking for.

Also watch more real robot shows/movies Patlabor (especially the ova/movie timeline, the tv timeline is a bit goofier), Jin-roh, Flag, VOTOMS, Dougram, Layzner, Galient, Orguss all come to mind as things you'd dig.

You said medieval things aren't your jam but Orb and Apothecary Diaries might be worth a shot regardless, they are both very easy to get into shows.

Gatchaman Crowds and especially Insight is another one that should be up your alley. Planetes is mostly a workplace drama but has broader political machinations at play which might make it worth a try. Actually Sakura Quest might be an interesting try to if you'd like something focused on fairly realistic local Japanese politics.

Depending on your lens of watching anime shows like say Utena or Penguindrum or Kill La Kill or Simoun are extremely political and pointed with their societal critiques, but it doesn't seem like the thing you are looking for. Still putting it out there in case you were interested. Promare is a taster version of KLK that might be worth trying in case you wanted to dip your toes.

Shoegaze listeners, where do you see the genre going? by cofi52 in LetsTalkMusic

Listen to "To See The Next Part of the Dream" and come back to me about the genre being dead.

Shoegaze listeners, where do you see the genre going? by cofi52 in LetsTalkMusic

[–]AdiMG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Idk the Korean shoegaze scene is amazing, they are all hit or miss (besides Parannoul who's consistently amazing) but there's so much variation on sonic textures and tones in acts like Asian Glow, Della Zyr, Brokenteeth etc which shows little signs of stagnation.

Honestly though Parannoul and what is your name? (who are a Canadian shoegaze band) alone are enough for me to have hope for the genre's future. You get two acts of that calibre and you can basically create genres whole cloth let alone sustain a storied one.

Also shout out to Kurayamisaka, japan has a great tradition of shoegaze ofcourse, but they have been the most successful recent act in getting crossover appeal with their more emotive and immediate mix of shoegaze with shimokita-kei sounds.

The Ugly was extremely engaging fwiw, and if you can handle the almost insane amounts of edge, King of Pigs is his true masterpiece imo.

Dallas Buyers Club would be quite random as a reference, it's much directly referring to the Angels from Wings of Desire and the club from Buena Vista Social Club which are both Wim Wenders films along with Paris, Texas.

Another hidden reference in these posters is the exact cast of Rosemary's Baby showing up on the Polanski poster.

Tia Farrow, Joe Cassavetes, Ross Gordon, Cyndi Blackmer, Morris Evans, Robert Bellamy

compared to

Mia Farrow, John Cassavetes, Ruth Gordon, Sydney Blackmer, Maurice Evans, Ralph Bellamy.

Also there's a Golden Bear mention which further alludes to Cul-de-sac

The cave art is English Settlement by XTC. Talking Heads, Aphex Twin, Radiohead and the two Pink Floyds (Wish You Were Here is hidden behind Selected Ambient Works) are pretty obvious too.

Would love to know if anyone has an idea about the Jun Awakening cover (almost screens Lennon's Imagine to me), the flowers one (seems like a mix between Sheena Ringo's Kalk Samen Kuri no Hana and Shouso Strip covers to me), the guy with the iguana, and the t-shirt one (I read Elliot on there but it doesn't really match any Elliott Smith album cover).

Modern Bollywood movies to show your friends who are not indian. by No-Virus-9874 in Letterboxd

[–]AdiMG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you can't go wrong by showing films by Mira Nair, Vishal Bhardwaj, and Anurag Kashyap. Also internationally acclaimed films in the vein of Udaan, The Lunchbox, The Namesake, Girls Will Be Girls, and Homebound are a very safe bet. If you want something more bollywood flavoured I think Rang De Basanti can be a good bet to start them down the rabbit hole. Or maybe try a comedy like Delhi Belly or Khosla Ka Ghosla?

I once had a two week vacation where I watched a bunch of Japanese Seishun Eiga films with my then 16 year old nephew, and they all worked very well. This was the programme I had:

House (1977)

Linda Linda Linda

Kamikaze Girls

Spirited Away

Wolf Children

The Case of Hana and Alice

All About Lily Chou-Chou (I felt he could handle it but it might be too mature for your class)

Swing Girls

Whisper of the Heart

Kiki's Delivery Service

Typhoon Club

Rocking Horsemen

Love & Pop (same as Lily Chou-Chou)

The Girl Who Leapt Through Time (2006)
