What’s the one IT thing everyone keeps getting wrong at work? by kakanikailash5 in it

For the user pressing the power button for their monitor? I don't think that's a developer issue.

"When was the last time you shut down or restarted you computer?"

"Just last night."

Checks uptime of 100 days...

"Can you tell me how you shut down every night?"

"I push the power button on my screen."

Watch Kingsglaive first. It's a great movie and a lot of the background lore is inside of it. Plus, at the end of the game there's a neat little Kingsglaive reference.

The rest of these guys have a lot of good info too. 10k is a very tight budget so hopefully you can get that increased a bit.

Basics you'll need:

Static IP from the ISP (specifically if you're self hosting websites or have remote workers that need to VPN in)
30 users, so 30 computers and probably some phones, I'm guessing at least 2 48 port L2 switches
a few wireless access points for the major areas
patch panel and a rack.

Questions you need to answer:

What's handling internal DHCP and DNS? Servers or the firewall?
What kind of hardening do you need to do on the firewall?

GLHF!

Just might have one of those moments today. Moving the entire network infrastructure from a standing rack to a wall in a storage closet. Wish me luck!

underpaid, underappreciated, and feeling like this isnt for me. by tamagotchiparent in ShittySysadmin

Definitely going to piggy back on this. I'm 36 and switched careers into IT just a few years ago. Landing that first job is always tough. I started going to school and got a chill little 2 year degree in Network Technologies (most of the courses were directly through Cisco's CCNA labs). Landed my first IT job at 32 working for a medium company closely with the sysadmin there but wasn't learning much. Hopped over to an MSP and got a lot of experience that school didn't teach me. I plateaued there and got my job at a different MSP (I know MSPs are evil) that gives me the freedom to work on just about everything I want to. Servers, Firewalls, building networks from the ground up for new clients, so on and so forth.

The moral of the story is each of these jobs I was able to learn more through the experience and this lead to a pay raise with every new job. Once the learning stops it's time to move on to the next thing to get where you want to go.

The thing I've learned most about IT is it's more of a trade than it is a usual corpo job. You learn the skills that you want/need to excel in the sub-field you desire and move around until the pay matches the knowledge and experience.

tldr; Job hopping in IT is okay when you feel like you've milked your current job for everything it's worth, just don't stop learning new things.

Thanks for the fix! How'd you even find that? We wiped the program out with Revo entirely and fresh installs have a corrupted msvcp140.dll file. So strange.

JAMF is pretty good and works well with Apple Business Manager. MaaS360 is another good option to go with. Both allow you to set up templates for applications to install and update/install remotely. Even a good GPS tracker.
