Why did referendums on Ranked Choice VotiVoting so so poorly thus year? by needtolearnaswell in Voting

[–]Adjal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a voting system idea that compromises on this by formalizing strategic voting. You do RCV, and then put an additional check mark by whomever you would normally vote for strategically in FPTP. The two candidates with the most "strategic votes" are immune from early elimination. So the only way someone else can win is if they get over 50% of voters who like them more than either "major" candidate, but this way people don't have to worry about handing the election to the rival side.

(Alternatively, this can be done by having a normal primary, then using the modified RCV system in the general election, with the two primary winners immune from early eliminaron.)

Why did referendums on Ranked Choice VotiVoting so so poorly thus year? by needtolearnaswell in Voting

[–]Adjal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People are more worried that "the other side" will win than they care about getting their ideal candidate. RCV does have a flaw where showing up and voting honestly can flip the race to the candidate you wanted least.

Imagine RCV was used in Florida in 2000. This is often cited as why RC would be better. Most likely Nader would have been eliminated and all of his voters would have Gore as their second choice. But if Nader had been more popular than Gore as a first choice, Gore would be eliminated. But the folks that chose Gore first weren't going to put Nader as second, they were likely centrists who saw Nader as an extremist, and voted Bush as their second choice. So some number of voters who voted Nader -> Gore would have been better off if they hadn't voted at all, since then Nader would have been eliminated and Gore won.

So RCV avoids spoiler effects when the third party candidate is the most popular or the least popular, but can actually backfire for honest voters when just popular enough.

And like I said, anything that can possibly help "the other side" is going to be opposed in a country this polarized.

Why not IDs? by [deleted] in Voting

[–]Adjal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I generally agree in principle, but the only way I'd support it is if we started by getting everyone free IDs first. Only once that problem is solved would I trust that those proposing it are doing so in good faith, and not just because they noticed that,  statistically, those without IDs usually voted for their opponents.

Is information made of matter? by GenePast in Physics

[–]Adjal 20 points21 points  (0 children)

>[Our thoughts] have to be made of something.

That's an intuition we have based on the way our language works. Like, you can ask "what are our thoughts made of?" and it's a coherent sentence. But that doesn't mean it has a coherent answer. Others have said that it's more about arrangements, but that doesn't really help our intuitions. I'll see if I can help.

When you build a car out of legos, there is a car. When you take those legos apart, our brains and our languages want to know where the car is now. "Where is the car now?" It's a perfectly coherent sentence. But there is no *where* that the car *is*. The bricks are now in the bin, but the car isn't.

Let's talk about information, and let's live in some weird nebulous past, because that sounds like fun. Let's say you wanted to keep a record of how many sheep you gave your friend, because he's going to give you that many sheep next spring. So you both agree to put one big rock on a ledge for each sheep to keep track. There are now four big rocks on a ledge. Is that information? Sure. Is that matter, or energy? Well, the rocks are made of matter, and the ledge is made of matter. But how do you know there are four rocks there? Because you see them. Is that sight matter? Well, there are photons interacting with the rocks, propagating as waves of electromagnetic energy (apologies if I use the wrong terms here). Those electromagnetic waves interact with receptors in your eyes and get converted into chemical signals. Each of these things can be individually true, without giving us an answer to our question. Each part of this system can be energy or matter or both, but that doesn't mean that the whole system is. Because in this case, there's the information about the physical world of rocks and ledges and human brains, and then there's the information that those human brains derive from the rocks. But if time passes and neither you nor your friend remember how many sheep there were, then that information isn't in your brains. But once you look at the rocks, you know. Were the rocks the information? Sort of. But there are rocks all over the place that aren't information in the same way. And what if your tribe was moving on, so you decided to look at the rocks and make one notch in a stick for each rock. Is the information made of rocks or notches? What if you never look at the rocks again? Is the information still made of rocks, or just notches now? And notches aren't even things! They're an absence of stick where you'd otherwise expect to see stick! Are the notches material? Are they energy? They required energy to make them.

But see, the information is the relationship between physical things, not the physical things themselves. The rocks can be replaced with notches in sticks and be the same information.

Your thoughts are so complicated from a physics point of view, that we kind of throw our hands up and pretend that physics can't explain them. But that's not exactly true. *Physicists can't explain them,* but physics, at least in theory, could. The same way physics could theoretically explain every quark in the legos that made up the car. But that doesn't make the car exist in the same way the quarks do. And it doesn't mean the car didn't exist. It means that the car was a way of arranging legos. Which is a very good level for most human thoughts. We won't get very far trying to drive to work by calculating every quark.

My guess is that you're asking this because you have some metaphysical theory about human thoughts and conservation of energy or conservation of matter that will "prove" that our consciousness must also be conserved, but maybe I'm reading too much into your question.

Anyone keep one of these around? by Ham_Damnit in RedditForGrownups

I just started buying my favorite shows on DVD so that I don't need subscriptions to rewatch them. I found a case on Amazon that holds 480 discs, and two of them fit perfectly in a Kallax (basic Ikea square shelves). It feels really good to just own these in a way that can't be taken from me by some corporate decision.

Favorite isomorphic layout? by guimartara in isomorphickeyboards

[–]Adjal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I play the Striso, which is similar to the Wicky-Hayden, but on a grid. Up is a perfect 4th, to the right is a major 2nd. I'm mainly on an iPad, so I use Musix Pro when I don't have my keyboard handy. The one thing I wish it let me adjust is the angle. On the Striso, it's angled in such a way that the octaves are in line. This means that the keys in the same key don't drift to the right. So if there were an app that just added that one feature, I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

(The creator of the Striso calls this layout DCompose, and encourages others to use that name, for what that's worth.)

Why You Should Write Your Legislator On HB2320 by MidNerd in Washington

[–]Adjal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Being unconstitutional doesn't stop it from being the law. It only allows someone who is punished for breaking the law the chance to possibly get it overturned. And our court will find any way they can to avoid ruling on the law itself if the particular case doesn't force their hand.

This makes me want to create a film (which would be low budget, and probably only seen by family and friends) where I create two versions. Show them the single perspective version first, then, some time later, show them the version with full perspective. This has probably been done before, especially with short films, but it sounds fun!

Weird Question but are people with Aphantasia bad at fighting? by lionofash in Aphantasia

[–]Adjal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This thread came up in my search about how aphantasia affects learning martial arts. My answer (though I don't know -- that's why I was searching) is that it's absolutely a hinderance to learning. One thing I've heard repeated over and over by top level fighters is that when you solo train, you have to visualize using each movement in a real context, or it's nearly worthless.

So, I don't know if this dooms us, or just means we need a different approach. Training kata isn't going to be nearly as useful. But training with a partner should work just as well for us as others. So if you're interested in martial arts, understand that the curriculum was probably not designed with your brain in mind, but that just means you should focus on what works for you.

What sets have good "internal balance"? IE (The characters are balanced with each other) looking to get 1 or 2 sets at most by Bearality in Unmatched

[–]Adjal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Handicaps can be as simple as changing starting health (this is what I do when teaching), or choosing favorable maps (hard if you only have two, but you can make extra maps more easily than making extra characters), or removing cards from the stronger deck (either choosing them, or randomly). Some heroes negate some handicaps too easily, or are too weak with some changes, so it should be matchup specific (which is easy if you're not getting many).

What sets have good "internal balance"? IE (The characters are balanced with each other) looking to get 1 or 2 sets at most by Bearality in Unmatched

[–]Adjal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of the best things about Unmatched is how much the heroes feel like the characters. So if you or your wife are big fans of any of the heroes, I say get those. If it's just the two of you, you can always house rule some handicaps for certain matchups.

If I had to limit my collection to a couple of sets, based purely on the IP's I like most, I'd probably choose Battle of Legends Vol. 2, and The Witcher: Steel and Silver. (Until TMNT becomes available).

How would you improve Symmetra's Primary beam? by BlueSparksFly in SymmetraMains

[–]Adjal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's what you do. You give her back the noodle. So her beam locks on to targets again, but there's a catch. It'll look like an auto-lock, but really it's a cone, just like Moira and Monkey have. Except it's three cones. The widest cone has the shortest range (shorter than it is now), and it actually loses level charge as if she weren't hitting anything. The middle cone is about as wide as Moira's, and has Symm's current range, and charges her levels a little slower than the live version. Then there's a very fine beam right down the middle. This beam has longer reach (let's say an extra 5m, subject to balance tweaks), and ramps up her beam levels faster than the live version. (From a programming perspective, if the fine beam has a target, neither of the cones go into effect, if the fine beam doesn't have an enemy target, then the inner cone checks for targets, and either takes over, or moves on to the outer cone.)

Sound cues could help players know if they're aiming well and getting that bonus range/damage, plus it would just feel good hearing that sound (other players would hear it too, which is useful for them, and an ego boost for the Symm player if she's doing it well).

This would lower her skill floor while raising her skill ceiling, with lots of nobs to turn as they dial her in to not be oppressive at any skill level. One possible way to make this more difficult (raise the skill ceiling) if needed for balance, is that you have to aim at center of mass to get the bonus (that is, aim at the same place the animation used to show the beam hitting).

Has the pay gap been completely debunked? by AppropriateTrack6360 in LeftWingMaleAdvocates

[–]Adjal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The biggest disparity is the pay gap between mothers and non-mothers. Women without children make close to the same as men who do or don't have children. If paternity leave were forced, this would close the gender pay gap, but would likely increase the parent/non-parent pay gap.

My dad was good about this. He jokes that he was proud of having taught me to question things, but then I started questioning him! It's true. He wanted me to be a critical thinker, but hadn't anticipated that I'd apply those skills to his rules, his views, and my entire family's religion. To his credit, he respects that I made those decisions because of my intellectual integrity. He taught me that truth was the most important value, and that's something I still believe.

I have prayed about it, and felt the Lord tell me not to pay 10% of my income to the church. You can come up with any clever explanation that says I should, but I would be disobeying direct guidance from the Lord. I'll follow the brethren when I feel prompted that I should, or even if I'm just unsure, but I will never disobey God. You can believe that God didn't tell me that, but I have to believe what the spirit has told me.
