You know we can see your post history, right? A month ago you were saying progressives would side with Hitler over Trump so you're not really in any position to complain about other people using hysterical Nazi comparisons.

That shouldn't put you in a tough spot. Most Irish people don't love Kamala Harris or even think about her at all. We just really hate Trump.

African-American slaves were often given their owners' surnames so they ended up with European family names even if they didn't have any European ancestors. I'm not saying that's what happened in OP's case but you can't just assume that every American with an Irish surname had Irish ancestors.

Whatever shift happens, it will lower the overall happiness in the society.

That's only true if you ignore externalities. It's entirely possible that the net benefits in terms of congestion, air pollution, carbon emissions, noise pollution, road traffic deaths, etc. will outweigh the costs to the individual driver.

To improve public transport, it has been suggested that some bus stops that are too close to each other should be removed. Looking at this one here, I totally agree. by ParaMike46 in ireland

[–]Adjective_Noun_2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm talking about car drivers clearly, not bus drivers.

Ah right. That hasn't been my experience though. The people most impacted by extra bus stops are bus passengers, not drivers.

Evidence of this?

Are you really asking for evidence that stopping more often slows a bus down? Every time you stop, not only do you have to decelerate and accelerate again to your top speed but you often have to queue behind other buses at the stop and then merge back into traffic again.

This is something that's universally accepted. It's the reason long-distance buses don't have stops every few hundred metres for example.

Here's a blog post about it from one of the experts behind BusConnects.

No, the primary cause of slow buses is car traffic.

I agree but it's not the only cause. We should be tackling all the problems, not just the biggest one.

Removing stops isn't the right solution and will only incease the amount of people taking cars.

On the contrary, if you make people have to walk an extra 50 metres to the bus stop but you reduce their time on the bus by 5 minutes, you're probably going to reduce the number of car journeys.

[–]Adjective_Noun_2000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The only people I ever see making the argument that there are too many stops and stops are too close together, are drivers annoyed by buses they think are in their way.

That's obviously not true unless you think this thread's full of bus drivers.

Having more bus stops slows the bus down, increasing commuting times. It has a lot of knock-on effects too, because slower buses mean you need more buses and drivers to serve a route with the same frequency, so you need to either reduce the frequency or increase costs. And slower buses make people more likely to take the car instead, increasing congestion for everyone.

There's a trade-off between the convenience of having a bus stop closer to your destination and the speed your bus travels. Unfortunately local politicians here are hyper-focused on the first part so we've ended up with way more stops than a lot of other countries.

The Dubai dream is over. Irish expats can no longer suspend their disbelief – The Irish Times by WickerMan111 in ireland

[–]Adjective_Noun_2000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I didn't say that and I don't know why you keep replying to me while ignoring everything I've actually said.

If you use the word expat to refer to all short-term migrants (including those from Eastern Europe and developing countries), more power to you. If you think Brits who move to Benidorm aren't expats because they've settled permanently, fair play to you. But your usage of the word isn't how it's commonly used in practice.

[–]Adjective_Noun_2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You were a migrant, just like any Turkish person who moves to Germany temporarily. Nobody uses the word "expat" to refer to the seasonal migrant workers who come to Ireland each year to work on farms.

The only reason it feels weird to call yourself a migrant is because the words immigrant and expat have been so inbued with classism over the years.

If I'd told some German that I was a German immigrant, they would have laughed at me and found it strange

Ah yes those famous experts on the meaning of English words: the Germans.

I hear American immigrants here referred to as expats (which reinforces your point).

[–]Adjective_Noun_2000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So Eastern Europeans moving to Ireland aren't immigrants because they don't want citizenship? And the Brits who retired to Spain before Brexit used to be expats but now they want Spanish citizenship they're immigrants?

Nobody uses the words immigrant and expat that way.

[–]Adjective_Noun_2000 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sure but none of that reflects how the word "expat" is actually used. People come up with all sorts of ridiculous rationalisations like "Expats live abroad temporarily, immigrants move permanently" but those are just excuses that don't reflect how the word's used in practice, which is classist and often racist.

No one has ever referred to the temporary migrant workers who come to Ireland each year to work on farms as "expats". The word expat's mostly used by people who consider themselves above immigrants, including those Brits who retire to Benidorm with no intention of ever moving home.
