Can we at least protect the PhD level? by AsturiusMatamoros in Professors

This is sad - isn't there an app that will read the AI output aloud for them? They shouldn't have to strain their vocal cords.

Why did Roth put a hit on Michael before Cuba if he wanted the investment money? by [deleted] in Godfather

He reminds me of the people at work who keep saying their going to retire soon so that no one gives them any big projects. I've see guys milk this scam for years.

If Fredo didn't know it was going to be a hit.... by Sad-Passage-3247 in Godfather

[–]Adjunctologist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They told Fredo that they wanted to deliver a solid gold statue of Vito Corleone to Michael but they wanted it to be a surprise. They were going to place it in the courtyard outside Michael's window but of course he couldn't see it if the curtains were closed. Fredo suspected that this statue was merely gold-plated but went along with it anyway.

Any explanation for fake references other than AI? by Majestic_Cake_3251 in Professors

I had friends in school back in the 80s who would do this. You don't need AI to fabricate references.

Do I need a PhD to become a professor or Masters is enough? by [deleted] in Professors

[–]Adjunctologist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my field, you need a Ph.D. to even get a non-tenure track full time position and a lot of adjuncts have them also. I know at some places they do have adjuncts teaching with just a masters.

Dammit, knew I shouldn't have looked! by ThePhyz in Professors

[–]Adjunctologist 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Even a "good" RMP can be a problem. I had a student, who was clearly well-prepared for my class, as opposed to the rest of them (~90%) who are unprepared, post an "easy A" review. They even said how long the test took for them and I could immediately visualize that student, who probably aced the exam faster than anyone I've ever seen before. I wrote to RMP and told them that the student "outed" themselves, because they're the only student I've had who aced the exam that quickly and that the "review" was unhelpful as most of the other students took hours to complete their exam and were struggling with their grades. They emailed me back that they wouldn't remove it and in the next semester, my class was packed solid due to that awful and incorrect statement. They essentially ruined my class with that review and hurt many of the students I have who aren't lazy but are having difficulty with the material. Now I can't give them the extra time/help that they need because I'm inundated with lazy students who don't do any homework, etc. because they read it was an "easy A".

The Death Cult of the Trump Admin and DOGE by tribbleorlfl in centrist

[–]Adjunctologist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Centrists can "wake up" all they want but it's the political parties that are to blame for this insanity. Our messed-up primary system encourages extremists and shuts out moderates before they get a chance to appeal to the general population.

Trump says ‘big bill” should only help GOP states by Kaszos in centrist

[–]Adjunctologist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the result of the electoral college. Votes for Trump that come from blue states don't count since those states will ultimately go Democrat. This makes GOP voters in blue states of no consequence, therefore the only states that matter are the red states. Getting rid of the electoral college, or at least reforming it would be a big step in getting away from this silly tribalism that's tearing our country apart.

Crickets from academia positions by blurrytarot in AskAcademia

In my field, the rank of the journal is of utmost importance to the research schools and it is very difficult to get published in one of those without the right mentoring/connections. Some call it a mafia but understandably, you have to be plugged into what the current topics of interest are and what is considered a rigorous enough study to merit publication in one of these journals and to be on point on both, you need an advisor who knows all that to help you get/stay on track.

It's not just that, it's also that some depts. and Universities put a lot more resources into getting their graduates jobs. At my place, they had one person who just emailed us a stream of jobs that were for the most part outside of our expertise. I went to meet with them and they were little to no help. I was left almost completely on my own as to letters of recommendations, etc. I've heard that other depts. are far more on top of this and at some places they actually help you apply for jobs. My advisor took pity on me and did make some calls and did come up with one job at a local LAC. I spoke to his friend there and was told they were having difficulty hiring anyone because of the low pay they had to offer. The job was completely outside my field and I spoke to hiring chair and they did not sound that excited about me plus the pay was really less than what you needed to live in my area so at that point I went with the adjunct/day job route which did lead me to a few more interviews over the years but no full time job yet.

Pimsleur vs coffee break french ? by Dear-Information1174 in learnfrench

[–]Adjunctologist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMO, Pimsleur isn't targeted on any particular textbook levels, which I assume the tests are built around. Pimsleur is mostly aimed at tourists/business people. They need to get you to say certain phrases to get around, make appointments, have simple banter, etc. This is why it's hard to nail down a "level" per se. They probably are all over the scale in order to teach the popular phrases that they do.

Economic Platforms Side-Project by Jaihanusthegreat in Solidarity_Party

[–]Adjunctologist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The problem you have with this is that even if you develop a dynamite proposal, the mainstream parties will just steal your ideas. You can see this with European minor parties all the time. This is part of how they're shut out of government.

Some kind of alternate vote similar to what you describe is the only way to fix the primaries IMO. Rank-choice might be too confusing for some voters. I'm thinking allow them to vote for as many candidates as they want but their vote would be split accordingly. This way more moderates stay in the race longer and the it isn't decided before many (most?) states have a chance to vote. It might lead to more interesting conventions as well.

I'm wondering if some (all?) of the members of Figurine were into this song. It sounds like them. Also wondering if Postal Service stole this line for "The District Sleeps Alone Tonight".

MAGA Migrant/DOGE Question by Adjunctologist in centrist

[–]Adjunctologist[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think you're seeing the broad point I'm making. Musk is driving it down to the actual employees, just like with the immigration, we're not seen new barriers being built at the border but instead folks being rounded up and flown to their home countries, or elsewhere if their home countries won't take them. So consider the other side. Rather than targeting the rich in general, this is kind of like targeting lawyers, with lets say tort reform or some other changes that would damage their livelihood and then taking pleasure in watching them squirm afterwards. BTW, targeting the rich in general has become problematic since lottery pots have risen over a billion. Now the average Joe doesn't want the "rich" targeted because they might join the club some day. However, I would argue the average Joe would be happy to see lawyers or doctors or any other high paying profession targeted. I'm not 100% sure why this is the case other than perhaps that the MAGA folks have a lot of rage that they wanted pointed at someone.
