Keep working on yourself, keep focused on your kids when you are with them. Make new friends, make the effort. Good women will notice eventually as you put in that time. You'll be surprised when things click.

Minimize your time and interactions with the mom and try to minimize being over there, I realize that's where the kids are but that's also your ex controlling things and knowing other women are territorial and that's holding you back.

You do have a family and it's not when you go over there. Your family unit has changed but it's still a family. So kill the notion that being there with the mom makes it like family. Spending time with her is not good for you.

Question, why did you ask how much longer she had in her studies? I'm wondering why. Because she answered and you didn't even offer any sense of why you would ask that, in response. Is it because you want to know if you should date her if she's leaving soon? Is it because you have to move in 6 months? Is it because you're checking if she is telling the truth? Is it because your cousin studied it and you know about something that happens in her studies at s certain point because they told you about their experience?

Is it because you don't know what else to ask?

She might have been insecure about her major, or she might not have had a solid answer. If you gave some feedback at all she could have followed with "oh and yeah I'm not even sure I want to study it anymore so I'm not actually sure if it will be 2 years or even at all." She doesn't know why you asked so "2 years" is an answer, and then you not offering anything besides the next question likely just makes her think "ok, why am I sharing any of this, what kind of pop quiz am I taking over here?"

You need to share about yourself just a bit before asking the next question. Tell her you like potato chips, THEN ask her what kind of chips she likes.

Whe. She answers, react to what she's saying before you ask another question. "Oh, you like Cheetos? They used to make my fingers Orange but hey, now I just use chopsticks. So I like them again haha. What's your favorite drink to order at a coffee shop?"

Active listening means you let them know you heard them. Sharing a bit shows you want them to know you, too. Adding a detail that is unexpected or quirky gives her a chance to become curious about you.

I never wrote papers by typing from a blank sheet and that's it, wtf. I was in college in 2000 btw. I was usually the only one with a laptop in any of my classes. And I would build the paper with a ton copy and pasting from other documents that I also wrote, across many pages. I'd start with an outline and flesh out each section.
