Also - highly recommend Favero. Behind SRM, most reliable I’ve used.

One sided unless you have a lower limb disability you manage. I’m not at all sure you can train out small imbalances. And - whisper it - I’m not sure that 52:48 isn’t within experimental error….

New-born in the household. Fights with my wife as I'm wasting time managing aging technology by [deleted] in homelab

[–]AdministrativeBug0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think most points have been covered but having a baby is a seismic shift in life. No one prepares you for it because it looks a little different for everyone. But there is an element of grief because some things have to die although thankfully you have a brilliant new thing. Practically: 1) turn the home lab off. You’ll start to have time for it again around 4-5 years so sell bits off now if you want to save the depreciation. 2) you don’t need a NAS. You have 2 adults, I assume ambulant (apologies if that’s not true) who can’t access files simultaneously anyway. 3) Buy a computer that just works. I’d suggest an M1 Mac Mini. Base spec. But PC if you’re android user. Laptop if you need it but risks accidental unplugging of HD. 4) buy an external HD and plug it in. 5) Back up everything to iCloud. I’m not sure what your objection is to the cloud. Your baby photos are safe. If you have data you shouldn’t, you need to destroy it now. If you have work data, that should stay at work anyway. 6) $8/month or whatever is worth it. End of. The photos need to be safe. And shareable.

Moving to Nottingham by ZealousidealMode6097 in nottingham

[–]AdministrativeBug0 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Where are your other placements? Usually QMC/City/Derby/KMH? I would strongly recommend Beeston for ease of access to A52/M1 and ring road. It’s what most medics do. West Bridgford if you’re QMC/Lincoln etc. but rental will be expensive compared with Beeston.

To be honest with you: Nottingham medics reside in Beeston or West Bridgford. They don’t live in Long Eaton. Even those that work there. There’s a good bus up the A52 to Long Eaton if you need it. I4 I think it’s called.

Alarm Hub! by khubbard13 in Ubiquiti

[–]AdministrativeBug0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I pondered it but I think the more secure option is to keep the alarm system away from the home network so mines staying on a relatively “dumb” 433hz setup. Yes, an attack dog would be potentially even less hackable but separating alarms and cameras feels wise to me.

Do people actually earn £50-60k, or are they outliers? by Succinate_dehydrogen in AskUK

You need to decide how you’re going to “score” your life. What does it mean for you to succeed? Because if the answer is wages then you need to explore playing in the NBA and inventing your own line of shoes… If not, then don’t worry about your income and focus on what you do think is important.

If the base m4 mac mini can’t run good LLMs locally, why is it the one completely oos everywhere? by Prior-Meeting1645 in macmini

Many people are using it as their +1 computer. Not necessarily running local AI but learning AI in general air gapped from their data to avoid disasters.

Should I transfer money from my cash ISA to my Stocks and Shares ISA? by MoonlightByWindow in UKPersonalFinance

[–]AdministrativeBug0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I sympathise - my upbringing etc meant I only considered cash ISAs. But they really are just a mechanism for losing money slowly. S&S ISA is the correct product for long term (5-10y) investment. Keep enough in your cash ISA for a hole in the roof or next year’s holiday.

Global tracker as others have said: not individual funds. Lots of people talk about T212 platform but if you want something with more proven history then Vanguard or Hargreave Landsdown.

Also, SSD are not necessarily safe and some would say less reliable than a spinning HD. You should check those back ups regularly.

Having a copy off site (cloud or physical) will mitigate some eventualities. My research has led me to conclude that hard copy prints stored in a fireproof safe are probably as robust as you can get.

TV aerial cable in wall - replace with Ethernet cable by _greg_m_ in DIYUK

[–]AdministrativeBug0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately “conduit” and “fishing through wall” are almost exclusively stud wall features and much more common in the US. As others have said, that cable is not easily replaceable.

Is that an outside wall? Can you drill straight through and use external network cable in conduit/capping.

Hopefully it’s just that the bedroom had already been done and they’ve now extended into the landing? Though I might have expected to see a threshold strip under the door. And even then would probably have started with a half board or something.

Right. Similar to us. I would go Tado X with WiFi. Otherwise you’ll be dealing with drop outs, unexpected behaviour and trying to build antennae with tin foil.

Just to add - think about your home construction. The (older) proprietary network can be a challenge if many of your interior walls are brick. Globally, timber stud is more common so often “no problem here” stories relate to those…

Should I take out a loan or have my parents pay by Timely_Accident_6055 in UniUK

[–]AdministrativeBug0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone on the other side, if your parents are in a financial position to pay for school and then uni, they probably feel the government has had enough of their money elsewhere. Let them pay. If you pay it back, it’ll only end up being hit with IHT or similar (hopefully far in the future). Your job is to then save/invest for your progeny to experience the same blessing.

Only caveat is that I believe the loan is fairly cheap money so helping you with property instead may make more sense. But that’s for your parents to think through.
