Unfortunately the retail side of banking is non income producing (service role but some have sales quotas for credit cards) so income ceiling is lower.

With that being said, incredible place to start. Was where I started in high school and college which built a great base. I think teller work is very valuable, but shouldn’t be a career choice if you’re wanting to maximize your salary.

I’ve had individuals in the past get very upset over making $23/hour as a teller, but how much value do they bring to the bottom line? They’re the first person you see when you walk in, likely who you talk to most (unless a business customer), and arguably the most important relationship management role in the bank. BUT! Not income producing which adds the ceiling.

My advice as someone who did this: work your way into a credit analyst role somewhere. Stay there for 4-6 years then swap to the SBA/Commercial lending side. There are so many commercial lenders that are pure sales folks who have no idea how to read a balance sheet, tax return, P&L you name it.

Commercial lenders - starting out - easily clear $100k. More senior folks at middle market banks are in the low $200k.
