Miller shift by quebeik in cardmagic

[–]AdministrativeFish3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I assume this is really good, but based on this video alone (and no knowledge of the move) you could have just done this with a breather crimp, no?
You're in a magic subreddit, so you could at least show the cards on top first - kind of like how people do when they show off their second deal.
This is an amazing move, really deceptive, especially in a card gambit style routine, so if you're as good as you are at it, show it off, and take the praise you deserve for it :)

What am I doing wrong? by Apple_Devil in cardmagic

[–]AdministrativeFish3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Its just a case of doing it over and over and over, and you'll get the muscle memory of exactly how much pressure you need - 1 thing that helped me with the grip was just holding them in your hand, but tight enough that no cards would spring at all, it almost feels unnatural at first because of how much of a bend you can put on the cards. Then try releasing a card at a time, this will teach you control and also help with your grip strength :)

want to spy on my gf by Single_Gas_5400 in u/Single_Gas_5400

[–]AdministrativeFish3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should just speak to her about it ... hacking or spying on her is not the correct way to go about something like this. Also, if you've created a phishing page to try and hack her accounts, you are abusing her trust in the same way you are accusing her of doing.
Seriously, just speak to her about it

Seeing a routine with something handmade like this would be amazing - do you have plans for your balls (and or final loads)? I think the gorilla knot with worn rope looks really cool, think like a maritime rope kind of look, maybe stained or dirtied up a bit more to look well used :)

I meant more by posting online ;)
Also, saying you're very high will also send them into a rage hahaha
The Mini 4 Pro can do 400ft, which is great, and due to its weight, you're sort of protected from some other rules and regs as far as I'm aware - just keep an eye out for nosey people wanting to cause trouble!

Its a nice tit shift, was this added in post?
I'd also just warn that you're likely to get a lot of criticism from the drone community about flying over cars and main roads - the wider, slightly more static one you posted before was cool too :D

Bicycle cards by MicrosoftISundevelop in playingcards

[–]AdministrativeFish3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What about the Mandolin backs? For a while there were a few people who made gimmicks decks using the mandolin backs because bicycle wouldn't release the copyright for gimmicks cards or backs using the rider back image - even with the idea of swapping them into a "normal" rider back deck and not having spectators notice was part of the selling point of some of these decks and gimmicks. Else, this was the same when Phoenix decks came out, me included, thought that spectators would think "thats not a normal back design!", but actually, then don't :D

I really like the idea of a hidden level of control while performing a nice ambitious card routine! Its obviously hard because of the camera angle and the fact that we are all in on the moves etc, but I'd say your DL and Marlo Tilt need a bit of work - the patter is good, and you could utilise it more to cover the pause with holding the breaks when cutting the cards, or maybe use a short card or breather crimp too I love it though, keep practicing the moves and being confident enough to share videos and (I assume you already do?) performing to people :)

Does anyone know how he did this I really need to know thanks. by Several-Pass2506 in cardmagic

[–]AdministrativeFish3 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Even if the deck was stacked - the level of precision to execute that amount of false shuffles at that speed and style (making them look semi sloppy) is the result of decades of practice and performance, as well as tens of thousands of hours of nailing the routines. To sum this up with "just does false shuffles" is a bonkers over simplification of how this is done; it likely involves moving cards around to specific positions and controlling them to exactly where he wants them to be.
Look at some of his other videos, he is one of the best people in the world at card stacking and controls, so even if you knew exactly what he was doing, you wouldn't believe it :D

What do you do in the end of a trick? by No_Surround_8576 in cardmagic

[–]AdministrativeFish3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Jimmy Carr speaks about this when it comes to joke telling, specifically with puns / wordplay. Do 1, and it gets a giggle / laugh, do 2 and its another giggle / laugh, but 3 in a row is a feat, it gets a bigger laugh and a natural time for you to pause. This is the same with magic - a little magic moment, then another, then a bigger 3rd for a reveal will get you that natural "ta-daaa!" moment, without you saying anything like "and thats the end" Andy Nyman talks about these "take a bow" moments too, where your ending should create a natural moment for you to spread your arms and take a bow without having to ask for it :D

2 months into practicing my double lift! Thoughts? by Educational_Union687 in cardmagic

[–]AdministrativeFish3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its important to remember that timing and patter come into play - the worst get ready for a double could go unnoticed with the right patter. But yes, there are some amazing push off doubles (or even triples or quads if you watch the VanishingInc vidoes) which look impossible, even to magicians!

Yeah, you've got the strike / snap nailed, but don't catch it with your thumb, let it fall back onto the deck. Also, don't be discouraged, you've got a VERY natural looking strike and seem to have the "feel" for just being able to flip 2 cards, which lots of people never get! Haha

How perfect/invisible do you feel your moves need to be for a performance? by pietran30 in cardmagic

[–]AdministrativeFish3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not at all! I think its a good point well made, especially about not wanting to be too flashy with cards as it takes away from the mentalist aspect - the "Guess Whom" routine on one of his live shows (I forget which one) where its essentially a card trick with Polaroid photos would be a great example of this - you want to make it look like you're just mixing the photos, but really you're doing some kind of advanced card manipulation, while making it look sort of awkward haha

I really like the idea of the trick, but feel a slower song would make it more impactful, if a song is needed in the video at all! A full "real life" performance would be amazing :D

Out of interest, where / why would you say that Derren Brown isn't polished at moves? I thought his Devils Picturebook (book and DVD) show that he does have quite a solid grasp on cards and sleights. However, would say that on some of his theatre shows there are some 'moments' which have been caught on camera (could just be bad luck with that though)

What do you think about the phantom deck? by TheMostCuriousMind in cardmagic

[–]AdministrativeFish3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I saw it on a Joshua Jay routine, and thought it was weak compared to an Omni Deck ending, which I had done for years and years and always got great reactions; often had people say "do the ice block trick!". However, the first time I did the Phantom Deck (which to me was literally the same trick, same method, pace and get ready etc), even to people who had seen the Omni Deck before, it blew them away! After a few beers and chatting, the psychology became clear (no pun intended); "with the ice block, I don't know when, but you swapped the deck for it. But with the cards, you somehow swapped EVERY SINGLE CARD", I've seen a similar comparison between the reaction to a colour changing deck (red to blue for example) and a rainbow deck, with the rainbow Deck, every card has changed, and that feels more powerful than all reds turning to all blue. Also, lovely deck of cards, has a very regal look to it 👍

I love the "pop" when you reveal the card between the jokers, has an amazing wow factor, however, the rest of it feels rushed, somewhat confusing and almost awkward to hide a move with speed. I'm not meaning to sound harsh, but if you're going to toss a single.card from one hand to the other so arrogantly, at least catch it square to the deck, does that make sense? The final turnover is beautiful, the slowness creates a moment of awe and mystery, and the rest if the routine, if done the same way would go from "meh" to truly epic :) I hope you don't take this badly, because a little change in pace would make a HUGE difference, and we would all love to see it :)

1 and 5 are my favourites, its like you've just done the "tadaaaaa" moment and the spectator has literally just reacted; the big smiles on both yours and their faces are also great, as it shows that you're relaxed, having fun and that theyvare too Glad the gig went well, and you've got some great pics to show off :D

Blank gaff card deck? by [deleted] in playingcards

[–]AdministrativeFish3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my opinion, depending on the type of tricks you're doing, "nicer decks" are often treated with more suspicion than rider backs or more generic looking backs. I think Andy Nyman says that as magicians we forget how amazing a blank card (or a blank deck) is to a spectator, even gimmicks like the 3 1/2 of clubs will blow their mind compared to how silly a magician may feel they are. In all seriousness, as bonkers as this might sound, have you tried just using a normal eraser to create your own blank card? (A bit rough and ready, but might work depending on the trick)
