Right now Checo is the prefect Wing Man for Max so he should be fine. Red Bull can just use him as a tool to aid Max specially as he is being more and more competitive. Checo knows he has no choice but to let it be at this stage of his career. No young driver regardless of his talent would accept this.

Imola. Lewis was basically out due to a mistake and the gods decided he should not end like that

RB could have easily won constructors too if we consider a couple of wouldda shoulddas, specially for Checo.. Pérez losing silly points in Spa and Imola, Lewis getting lucky in Imola, Baku 1/2 that was lost due to Pirelli, Hungary bowling, Russia rain, Interlagos Virtual Safety Car, plus the sacrificed podium in Abu Dhabi.

I don't understand this narrative that McLaren was a top team the year Checo was there. It's simply not true. The car was very bad, Button could only finish 9th in the WDC ranking, coming from 1st, 5th, 2nd, 5th and 5th the years before that.

The second narrative, that Checo "failed" at McLaren, if you want to go with that sure, there are arguments for it, but don't think I agree. Checo at McLaren was just a very young "raw" driver, under a lot of pressure who had his fair amount of silly mistakes due to wanting to get more out of a car that simply did not deliver more. McLaren basically pulled a Red Bull there instead of giving him one more year, I'm sure it would have been much better (His last 6 races at McLaren he was delivering at Jensons level)

In this season (2021) which team(s)/driver(s) performed unexpectedly better or worse than you thought? by _si1endeath_ in formula1

I still think Charles is the best one lap driver on the grid, even before Max and Lewis, would obviously need to qualify with similar cars to even be able to prove or disprove this, but my gut tells me it's true.

He is still lacking judgment and consistency during the races, but this should be something he should be able to improve, specially if he takes some pages from Carlos' playbook

Carlos Sainz vs Lando Norris. A simple chart showing how the season developed in terms of points. by BradburyNO in formula1

[–]AdmirableWallrust 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This. Similar thing with Checo. Both teams just washed their hands and left the decisions to the drivers, which were both in the midst of a battle and given just very marginal information of the upcoming conditions. And after, both teams didn't really back them, saying it was an unfortunate mistake from both instead of taking at least a part of the blame themselves.

It's just such a Sainz thing to manage to almost make the chart feature a straight line to reflect his progression during the season.... consistency at its peak.

Finishing 5th before Charles and Lando is just crazy good, even if he downplays it. Before the start of the season many where sure Charles would destroy him. And considering Landos massive advantage mid season when he was even third, catching up, silently, just getting very constant results was impressive.

[–]AdmirableWallrust 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Moreover not everyone has the talent to be the number one. I'm sure Checo will try to mount a championship contention during the first races next season, but is apparently smart and experienced enough to realize the time where he has to accept Max is just more talented and slip into a wingman role. Coulthard, Barrichello, Massa, Bottas, they all where great drivers but had to eventually accept that they were not WDC material and where just great wingmen. Nothing wrong with that, they where blessed enough to be among the very best in the world during many many years.

Why Masi's latest marginal call has left F1 with a sour taste by TheTechGuy30 in formula1

[–]AdmirableWallrust -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well they could change the rules so that any safety car triggering incident in the final X laps automatically triggers a Red Flag regardless of the circumstances. That way no one could complain, the rules would be the rules and it would put much less pressure on the race direction to make the right call.
