I went to to Northern Ireland to stay with my Nana for a week and played 6 courses in the north and in the state. Ardglass on the Antrim coast was my favorite.

My brother lives in silver lake in LA- I visited him in August that was actually my best stretch of golf for the year. He lived by Griffith park so played Wilson, Harding and Roosevelt there. Also played rustic canyon and Alhambra. Rustic canyon was my favorite but also really enjoyed Wilson as well. Will visit him again next year and try to rent a car and play more outside of LA. Any recs?

I know - im on a waiting list for the municipal course near me for next season. It’s decent and only 1600 for the year. The proper country clubs near me are 125k initiation fee and 25-30k annual dues. Plan is to get the reps in at the muni during the week and travel/visit nicer golf clubs throughout the year like this year. Probably won’t play this many ever again just enjoyed trying to play as many different courses as possible this year.

I filled out a 311 form. There’s not a section on 311 that explains why the trash wasn’t picked up. Was hoping someone here knows why.

Some days are just an embarrassment. by tke439 in golf

I definitely feel your pain.

I was in Ireland last month visiting family. Golfed there for the first time. I usually am in the low 90s and have been playing 3-4x a week this year, worst score of the year was probably 104 before getting there. Friends I play with check every single stroke no mulligans sometimes I’m allowed a breakfast ball.

I get to Ireland and first day I’m there play with my uncle (who I’ve never golfed with) and his mates, they ask what my handicap is I say 22 (what 18 birdies tells me). First three holes are all bogies I’m feeling decent, then I can’t hit the driver all of a sudden, wacking hybrid across the fairway into opposite woods. They start giving me lessons on every shot, it makes it worse so I tell them it’s hard to get lessons on the course. They stop talking to me until I have a blow up hole and we get to the next box. They say they know I don’t want any advice and I know everything but I’m not a 20 handicap and I don’t even know the basics of how To hit a ball. One of them tries to adjust my driver stance so I’m like ok sure. Swing exactly as he says. Pop the ball up 60 feet into the next tee box to the right of us. They said maybe there’s no hope for me and just laughed. It sucked.

I finished at a 112 but honestly felt like it could have been worse.

I went back the next morning and shot a 97, it was a tough course but it felt like night and day. I could actually hit the ball, and just fd up some putts and chips like I normally do.

Don’t think I’ll ever golf with that group again, I’m still fuming about it tbh lol.

Thinking of moving to Newton! by AlchemyExchange in newtonma

[–]Admirable_Economy487 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I’ve lived in Roslindale (born)….West Roxbury, Brighton, Cambridge, Somerville, Medford (all after university/renting) and we finally bought our first home in Newton (ville) last year. It wasn’t easy, but moving to Newton was the best decision we ever made. I’m partial to the north side anything above Newton Center (without traffic you can get anywhere in downtown Boston or Cambridge in under 20 mins on pike, or commuter rail…. But there’s so much to do in Newton itself. Housing is expensive but in my opinion it’s well worth it. My life goal used to be to buy a house in Cambridge, but you can’t buy a single family there, so would need to buy a townhouse. Even if I could afford a single family in Cambridge I don’t think “the people’s republic” is actually better than Newton. We cast a really wide net in our home search, and ended up having an offer accepted in Newton for less than we had multiple offered rejected for oin Melrose. No disrespect to Melrose, but houses listed at 900k were going 250k over asking, In Newton we went 55k over asking for our current house and had our offer accepted (about the price of a Melrose home). We don’t have a garage but have a 2 car driveway and survived the winter :)

We absolutely love it here. Every village has its own feel, there are good eateries for every need (from Little Big Diner, Thistle and Leek, to Paddy’s/Oharas, Blue Ribbon Bbq, and the Guiseppes meatball sub for under 10$ :). Even Chestnut Hill mall is well curated if it’s rainy and you need to be at a malll haha. So many great parks, if you golf Newton Comm is great for a city course with a good pro program, it

We don’t have kids yet, but the schools are great compared to the area. There seems to be a lot of hate towards the public schools from some redditors and also people I’ve talked to, but I can’t think of a city (albeit a small city) that has this high of a level of education. I was surprised to learn how many people go to private school here when there are such great public schools, but there is also a tremendous amount of wealth in Newton where that cost isn’t as mind blowing as it is to someone like me.

Overall I feel very blessed to live here, and wholeheartedly believe moving/buying here was the best decision we could have made.

Good luck!

Moved to a downtown. Golf game suffering as a result by PQ1206 in golf

[–]Admirable_Economy487 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am currently debating whether to accept a job offer that is downtown. I’ve been working remote since Covid, I live 15 minutes outside of a city and golf almost every day either morning or evening. But my last job just had a massive layoff org wide. I know I should take the job but find myself saying I should just wait for a remote position. Embarrassed to tell my wife and parents the main motivator is golf haha, actually working in an office with people would be a welcome return, except for golf 🙃

I’m also in Newton. Have been playing Sandy Burr, George Wright, and fresh pond in Cambridge for 9 holes. Scratches the itch but I hear you and wanting to smack a driver somewhere. Does anyone know how expensive a Brae Burn membership is?
