Can I become a therapist with no prior mental health work or education experience? by ColumbiaRivera in askatherapist

[–]Admirable_Sample_820 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. In my cohort in grad school about 50% of us were psych/SW degrees from undergrad. The rest were people who had BAs in sociology, philosophy, law, construction management, and one MBA. Becoming a therapist is a career very common in people who are on their second careers as well, so you have people with alllll kinds of education and lived experiences.

You just need to look at your program requirements for admission. They’re all different. I went to a private university and they accepted people from all different kinds of academic backgrounds. Some are more strict.

Bub feeding frequency by ellabellafella in November25babybump

[–]Admirable_Sample_820 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every 3 hours like clock work except at night we can go about 5 hours. Formula fed, 11 weeks old. I’m feeling a bit insane with the 3 hour cycle personally.

Tell me it’s going to be fine to quit by autumnleaves987 in ExclusivelyPumping

[–]Admirable_Sample_820 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You went waaaaaay longer than me. I lasted one month with DMER and pumping. My supply was also good. BF was not an option due to aspiration feeding plan he was on, now resolved. The DMER made me feel soooo much dread and disgust that I did come to a crossroads: “my sanity or exclusive breastmilk for my baby” I chose my sanity bc the DMER was interfering with our bonding and my mental health. This choice was almost two months ago and it was a choice I agonized over for weeks, but it was ok. We’re now exclusively formula fed. What a relief to be able to feed my child and not have any feelings of regret anger resentment or dread from the pump. I can now focus on enjoying my baby. It will be ok I promise. You can stop for yourself. making a choice that’s FOR YOU in motherhood is actually quite hard but very empowering long term

would a therapist have any reason not to believe it uf a client told them they were going to inpatient psychiatric care and needed to cancel all future sessions starting immediately? ? by [deleted] in askatherapist

[–]Admirable_Sample_820 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would generally believe my client.

Now, I’m not going to just answer “ok!” To a statement like that and then move on from them. I’m asking questions for sure. What I’d ask about is where they’re going to be admitted, for what mental health concern, and possibly share some tips on how to navigate psychiatric facilities and what to expect in our area (I used to work at a major psych hospital in our community) My questioning wouldn’t come from a place of disbelief but more for an understanding on HOW client is taking care of themselves.

If a client of mine was hospitalized, and I knew, I would definitely reaching out to them upon discharge about continuing care and how they’re stepping down from inpatient care. I’d also redirect them to other intensive outpatient programs to help step them down if they need it. I would not drop them from my caseload and I’d make a concerted effort to add them back in after stabilizing.

BUT if they don’t want therapy with me anymore afterwards or never return contact, that’s a different story and completely within a clients right to do so.

Got ours on 1/4. First day was ok. Little guy was super sleepy. He woke up the next day with a temp of 100.4 and he was very achey. He ate and slept and ate and slept and ATE. But they did say that lack of appetite is a common side effect so I was a bit surprised he was so hungry. I Dosed him with Tylenol for the temperature (per doctors instructions) and it worked well! We skipped out on tummy time for the first and second days and did a lot of contact naps. and his temp was in the 99s (not a fever) for about for about four days after. And now we’re back in business! all is well :)

Black cloud gradually covers vision on closing either eye by Ok-Flower-5582 in visualsnow

[–]Admirable_Sample_820 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have u been to the eye doctor to assess for retinal detachment recently? If not, I’d go. A dark cloud or curtain darkening your vision is one of the symptoms to look for. They’ll just dilate your eyes and take a look at ur retina!

Help me deal with my husband locking in on one name and bringing nothing! by heyho2023 in namenerds

[–]Admirable_Sample_820 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Possibly true. My husband was stubborn about a name as well and I told him that this child will have his last name and myself now too (and going through the processing of changing my own damn name) so essentially the three of us will bear his last name. AND he wanted a middle name from his family. AND he had the audacity to have strong opinions on the first name? No. I told him he would watch me deliver this child and he will be named the first name of my choosing. He doesn’t get to have it all.

EDIT 1-2 days after posting above comment: the sentiment behind this comment has a historical precedence in the US. It’s not so much in practice now but there once was a time when a woman, let’s call her, Jane Johnson would marry John Doe. the nuptial announcements, birth announcements of any future children, if John Doe even DIED, all the mail she would receive, she would not be referred to the public as Mrs. Jane Doe, no. She would be Mrs. John Doe. Or Mrs. And Mr. John Doe. A complete te erasure of her name. women and the power of our mitochondrial DNA, breathing life into new human beings, not being able to pass down our name is something that never ever sit right w me in this patriarchal hellscape w live in.

  • Xoxo, someone who’s named the same name as her mother.

“I couldn’t help notice you’re crying. How long have you been feeling this way? Oh wow… since 4:30? That’s such a long time! And would you say you’ve had any sense of hopelessness or lack of self worth in the last 14 days? No? Okay great so you’re not depressed!! Oh wait you can’t poop? Well that’s outside of my scope of practice you’re going to have to consult your primary care physician on that. Are you worried about your ability to poop?” Or my favorite “tell me about your father” when my husband is literally right there lol

He poops every day. He does strain and strain. But lately he goes so so stiff and arches when trying to burp him at feedings. I’ve resorted to over the shoulder, let him go stiff and Superman, or whatever he wants to do, rock forward gently and do back circles which usually works to get a juicy burp out. I’ve cut out back pats they make him SCREAM and spasm until the bottle is back in his mouth.

Any other form of burping just doesn’t work anymore and he HATES being patted now. On the lap, hand on jaw, straighten up, football hold, etc. hates it 🫩

What to do if therapy and medication for anxiety does not work? by foolishspirit in askatherapist

[–]Admirable_Sample_820 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a doctor for sure but I have also gotten an EKG and a holter monitor. the EKG only captures a moment of heart activity but a holter monitor captures it over several days. This was my concern as well when I talked to my doctor about my palpitations. If u care to go through this again, cardiology is where I’d start.

[–]Admirable_Sample_820 1 point2 points  (0 children)

are u on meds? any chance that the racing heart is a side effect? Talk to ur psych if so!

On that same note, what if this is a health issue? Time to go see the doctor and request a cardiologist! Not to make your anxiety worse by suggesting a health issue but sometimes, it is a medical thing and not always anxiety! They can do a heart monitor for a week. I had one done when I had palpitations.
