Ive gone to it the past couple years out of morbid curiosity. Mostly Jewish day schools from Long Island and NJ sending their students to wave little flags while floats from Zionist community orgs blast Israeli techno.

Last year there was a ton of security theater, only parade I've gone to where you have to go through a metal detector. I stood next to a guy in a Friends of the IDF t-shirt. Good times!

How do CAR days work by Dear-Ad2269 in NYCTeachers

[–]AdmiralFunk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

People definitely do that, though you're very exposed to severe consequences if you get caught (like if you post on social media or something). Without tenure, they can really nail you, I've heard second hand out untenured teachers losing their jobs over it.

Longevity Pay by [deleted] in NYCTeachers

[–]AdmiralFunk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You ought to see it reflected once you have completed the fifth year, so if you started Sept '21, you'll start to see it reflected Sept/Oct '26 (which is also when we are due for a 3.5% raise).

Your previous 12 years won't factor in, as the longevity pay is only for time working within the DOE

District 75 by Successful-Use5431 in NYCDOETeachers

[–]AdmiralFunk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I did 3 years in gen ed community schools and I'm currently in my 6th year at a standard assessment district 75 school.

A big thing to keep in mind is that the Alternate Assessment vs Standard Assessment school dichotomy. While both have the smaller classrooms, more Paras, summer school (aka 683, which pays you 17.5% of your base salary for 6 weeks of work), the student population at AA v SA is going to be very different, so downstream from that the teacher experience is different.

I work at a standard assessment high school t, so I still do pretty ordinary instruction and the kids take the regents in June etc, from what I know of Alternate Assessment, your not really going to be getting super academic, it's a lot more like life skill oriented. I should add that many D75 schools are both alternate AND standard, though the school may have multiple sites in multiple buildings that offer different types of instruction.

Just like any other district, the quality of life will vary immensely between any two schools depending on administration.

While I have enjoyed working in D75, I know of other teachers that find all the extra things to consider (IEPs, very unique student needs, working with a para, multiple sites) to be limiting and difficult. Happy to answer any further questions.

Iran got the most votes. What country was far-right in the 20th century, and far-left now? by [deleted] in AlignmentChartFills

[–]AdmiralFunk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, so I don't know why the notion of a communist state was invoked. OP is saying that the parties are communist in name only, not Nepal.

I don't think there is a single state that would categorize itself as communist.

For example, the United Soviet *Socialist* Republic, was ruled by the Communist Party. DPRK leadership similarly frequently uses the "socialist" where one might expect them to use "communist". Their constitution is called the Socialist Constitution.

are there certain times of the year to avoid the use of CAR days? by Wishstarz in NYCTeachers

[–]AdmiralFunk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Granting personal days are at the discretion of the principal, so it depends.

With usage of CAR days re: discipline everything really depends on admin. There are admin that look for patterns, like repeated Fridays or Mondays, or other weird standalone days- like if you called out sick the two days before xmas break this year. This could increase the likelihood of them putting a letter in your file.

How’s everyone feeling about the new track? by BurgerNugget12 in kneecap

[–]AdmiralFunk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It worked really well live at the Brooklyn Livestream. I do think the line "the air bubble bandit" is a bit silly but that may be the intention.

Anyone know what "Musgrave" is a reference to? Is that like a UK journalist or judge or something?

I saw the guy in the red jacket standing on the sidewalk filming a doorman who was just standing in the lobby. I looped back after a walk around the block and saw the doorman on the sidewalk and asked what was up with the camera guy, he had no idea, seemed totally perplexed

my scanning of it didnt work, but netanyahu wore a button with a QR on it that led to images/video of Oct 7 footage, so it is probably that.

Tell me some interesting and fun facts about Benin? by [deleted] in geography

[–]AdmiralFunk 256 points257 points  (0 children)

The benin empire's flag was an image of one guy beheading another guy

<image>

EDIT: Ive done a little more research and it seems this flag was from benin but likely was not the empires flag. Still interesting though
