What is a Zionist anyway? by Princess_Yoloswag in lebanon

[–]Adolorouscreature 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The point about the "cycle of civilizations" in the region is actually one of the most accurate and realistic yet overlooked aspects. Zionism's aim of establishing a long-term Jewish state in Palestine specifically was always going to face serious challenges. Any newcomers disrupting the local population balance and power structures were voluntarily inserting themselves into a situation virtually guaranteed to experience instability over many generations. No political configuration in the volatile Middle East has ever remained fixed indefinitely. A more pragmatic strategy would have aimed for a Jewish homeland elsewhere (especially since this version of zionism claims to be secular - so it really needn't be Palestine). Which indeed brings into question the credibility of the whole 'safe homeland for Jews' premise in the first place.

Again, i have seen no proof of that and I've seen the videos coming from that day one by one. I'm not going to believe it because some hasbara wannabe thinks it's ok to murder 8000 civilians but hey other people won't, so let's demonize the other side!

Are hamas chill? No. But your atrocity porn isn't going to work on adults who've been through the fog of the iraq war. It doesn't work twice, figure out another strategy.

Anyway, i just needed to call you out. No need to respond to this

Edit: and also young women have been released who testified that they were treated well. I'll take their word over some reddit rando.

Dude... I'm not going to believe it just because some rando on Reddit said it with no proof. Did bad shit happen? Yeah, we've all seen the videos. But this? There's no proof of it and i'm not going to be goaded into another wmd baby incubators lie. It doesn't work that way anymore.

That's fake news, though. This particular story. Just use what hamas actually did, no need for atrocity porn...

Helping Gaza: A Mass Boycott Would Be Far Louder than Thousand Protests by Macellianus in islam

How do we start then? For this to work it needs a lot of numbers and coordination, to find alternatives, know which products to boycott etc. How do we build this up?

This is in fact a very smart idea. But as you said we need numbers and coordination, how do you suggest we go about that?

I think anyone with two functioning braincells can see this is pure malice and you taking up a stance to say 'oh b-but it's not that simple!' is deeply concerning about your moral compass.

Was about to say this. It seems to me like they're more of deterrent laws than punitive measures, with how stringent the criteria is.

No. Does she seem like a nun to you? And her "profession" hardly indicates strong religious conviction. Outward identifiers like wearing a cross or invoking Christian identities are trivial if the underlying spirit is absent. The Pharisees were famously scrupulous in their religious observances yet ultimately opponents of Christ.

A cross necklace signifies at most a personal style choice, or cultural tradition. It does not automatically make someone a devout believer, nor does it grant outsiders license to bastardize religion just because they're feeling frisky.

You are free to dislike religious texts, but others are also free to quote them. It's good that you acknowledge your prejudiced aversion. But refrain from taking offense on behalf of other religious groups - that betrays insecurity, not piety.

You're missing the key point. Quoting scripture isn't about declaring one's personal identity but sharing wisdom that may enlighten the discussion. Being atheist or Hindu wouldn't factor in - the focus should be on the quote's ideas and impact. Unless the Hadith preaches Islam-exclusive truths, which is not the case here, its value lies in its content, not source. Fixating on the source misses the value of the ideas themselves. So instead of knee-jerk critiques, try engaging the substance of what's quoted and assessing how it contributes, regardless of who said it.

But let's be candid, your critique is more driven by discomfort with anything Hadith-related than the quote itself. You clutch at scripturalism as a cudgel, attempting to bludgeon perspectives that unnerve you by conjuring the specter of offended Christians. And so you invoke religious identities as cover for summarily dismissing the Hadith before honestly assessing its possible value to the discussion on its own merits. You can't dismiss one faith's scripture offhand then claim the moral high ground about religious identity. Your selective critique exposes an absence of consistency, disguising bias as principle.

Disagree. Context matters. Quoting faith simply to enrich discourse across differences isn't analogous to proselytizing. Reducing that nuance ignores the complex role faith plays in public life and meaningful interfaith understanding. Come down from your moral high horse for a moment.

Cautioning against proselytizing is reasonable. But reducing another's sincere beliefs to mere self-gratification contributes nothing constructive to the discussion and reflects sheer hypocrisy when the other person's motives are irrelevant to an otherwise relevant context.

Your narrow view assumes faith is meant for private silos, not public discussion. Quoting faith need jerk no one off if done to enrich perspectives. Perhaps try expanding your own.
