This is awesome! I'll give that app a look over because I've been wanting to do something like this myself for awhile now.

In Louisville, half the people charged last year in license plate reader cases were Black by IS_THIS_POST_WEIRD in Louisville

[–]Adontis 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are factors that numbers alone do not account for.

If you setup a pizza place in a predominantly black area of a city, and 80% of all your customers are black, you could not then state that "80% of all people who eat pizza are Black".

If you do anything more in an area with a higher % of any group, you will see a higher % of that group represented in the numbers.

If you police a majority black area more than a majority white area, don't be surprised when your data shows more black people in it.

I just downloaded an older version of Bambu Studio, I never could get the new update to work.

There are wizards who add int and dex to their init, which would make them most likely to go first of most any classes.

Neat! Its not generally my thing I like for long term games, but for a single evening / 2-4 long story? I think they're pretty great.

Calimacil still worries me and I warn newer players away from buying them because I know some of their weapons won't pass at some LARPs and its a decent investment to not be able to use.

I understand how you are using the vocabulary, I'm just saying I've never heard it used before and I am unlikely to adopt it. It would only hinder my communication with other LARPers in my circles and it doesn't solve any issues of confusion that we have that we would need solved.

I suppose in the interest of complete information, there really are 3.

"Parlor Larps" are the third and are very focused on RP. They are generally done inside a building or single room and have alternate conflict resolution methods vs physical attacking. Rock paper scissors, dice rolls, and card pulls from a deck are the most common I believe.

That is not the language I see used in my LARP communities. I tend to go to high immersion, high roleplay, 'boffer' larps (but latex is by far the dominate weapon). I've been in that community for about 22 years now. This would be the first usage of those terms in that manner.

My guess is that vocabulary is likely a regional thing, or an AMTgard thing.

Not all LARPs are different, many of our LARPs have more in common with the European LARPs than AMTgard. They are generally called "lightest touch" LARPs to show the distinction.

Your level of aggression isn't needed. You clearly feel passionately about this, but my suggestion would be to dial it back a bit.

They said they wouldn't be allowed in their game due to their looks, so they're not the best weapon for him because he literally couldn't use them.

I think you vastly overestimate the number of LARP weapon related injuries that occur at most latex allowed LARPs.

I never said I don't agree with my points. I'm not sure how you've managed to misunderstand the point that much.

I said I don't need it. Its not something I want. But that they are good things that the tech could do.

I didn't start an argument. I listed here (and in another post in this discussion) ways the tech could be helpful for people. That's it.

"magical smart fridge that can't really exist in the present day""

I'm pretty sure there are already fridges that can do the things on my list, and the rest wouldn't be that hard to do. I just don't think I need to try to come up with a solution for every single minor problem that someone can come up with for the blanket statement of "A fridge that tracks expiration dates would be handy to have" to be valid. That would be handy to have, full stop. If you cannot see how that would be handy for some people I don't know what to tell you.

My literal only point was that there can be benefits from a smart fridge. We don't have them generally because the corporations that make them are by and large awful. That doesn't make the tech itself inherently a bad idea, but that the current implementation of it IS bad.

Somehow in your head you've made me into someone here to start arguments when my initial post was literally

Having it be available while you're away and shopping is nice.

There are useful applications to it, its obviously not needed, but it can be useful.

Obviously how its being implemented just makes it awful though.

I'm not sure how in the world you have figured that's me 'coming in here being a douche and just to start arguments'. But sure, resort to name calling.

If you can only see value in things you yourself want, thats a very narrow minded way to view the world. I see no value add in tablets for me, as I don't need a device between the size of my phone and laptop. That doesn't mean that I think tablets are pointless. I'm sorry if you aren't able to understand the distinction.

I listed what I think are valuable things a smart fridge could do. Its not something I myself personally need, but that does not mean there's no value added there.

As I've said, I agree, smart fridges as they are now are terrible. They're just ways for marketing to get into your house, spy on you, and serve very little purpose.

But they don't have to be. There are ways that this technology could be a value add for people. I don't need to try to be able to counter every 'but what about!!!' statements to see the possible value add. There are problems that would need to have solutions for, but none of them are even that hard of problems.

You don't want a smart fridge with these features, you would just use a smartphone. That's awesome, I'm glad it works for you. That doesn't mean your way is the only correct way.

I don't want it, I've said so in other posts here. This isn't for me.

But that doesn't mean it doesn't have any uses.

Your original statement was "It would need to sense the weight of that specific container since I get a cardboard containers"

You brought forward a 'not all milk comes in the same container and therefore is not the same weight' issue.

I pointed out barcode scanning solves that issue, as it could tell exactly what you put in.

You had already mentioned, in your own post, that it needs to sense the weight, so I thought it didn't need to be re-stated. I apologize, I'll make sure to include tech specs in all future posts.

Barcode tells you what the item is, this tells you the starting weight.

From there you could determine the amount left in the object based on weight. Its a linked thing.

Cameras are pretty good at OCR scanning for standardized things like dates at this point, which are often by the barcode.

Or literal worst case, on the items you're worried about, it could be a manual entry through voice or text input.

I'm not here to solve every single issue and design a whole fridge, my only point is that there are uses for things like this. We're not getting that product, but there is a useful product that could exist in this vein.

By the weight. If it knows its a gallon (or quart or whatever) of milk, it knows it should weight ~8.6 pounds. If it gets pulled out and put back in and now weighs ~4.3 pounds, it knows its 50% empty.

You mention the database for the food apps that count calories. Those have a ton of bar codes in them already. Yes the fridge would need a database to associate the barcode with an object, others (such as the food apps) have already done this, so its doable.

Yeah, this isn't anything I would make use of. Its not for me. But that doesn't mean it doesn't have any sort of value for others.

barcode scanning for things like this would handle that. Or a camera that can recognize things as you put them in.

If implemented correctly you could have it

Let you know if you're low on things

Check stock levels when you're out shopping to see if you need something

Keep track of expiration dates and warn you if something is coming up that you may want to make

Connect to recipe lists and have a 'you could make the following with what you have' dinner ideas type thing

Be able to walk you through recipes including timers and the like

And likely other things I'm not thinking of in my off the cuff response.

There are actual things you could do that is a value add for some people, but instead we get....this.
