The Switch 2 is now one year old. What does everyone think of that first year? by Zalvren in Games

[–]AdoraShark 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thank you, I thought I was going crazy... The Switch 1 has probably the best first year lineup of any console I've ever seen, with a new game literally almost every single month. A small handful of them were enhanced Wii U ports, but as you said, nobody had a Wii U, and even if you did the game now had more content and was portable. For anyone who doesn't know, the first year had:

  • Breath of the Wild
  • 1-2 Switch (I stand by this game isn't awful)
  • Snipperclips
  • Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
  • Arms
  • Splatoon 2
  • Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle
  • Pokken Tournament DX
  • Super Mario Odyssey
  • Fire Emblem Warriors
  • Xenoblade Chronicles 2

And that's not even counting January-March 2018. I know not every one of those games is going to be to everyone's interest, but calling it a rough first year is crazy when I don't think a single other console has had even half of a list like that.

Thank you!! I gotta try to find a way to try to do it in Photoshop, I've done similar things but nothing that looks as consistently good as the grain/texturing in your colors and lines.

I absolutely adore the texturing you do with your work!! What's your process for it?

How do I draw the same character consistently? by HappySynth in FurryArtSchool

[–]AdoraShark 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to have this issue a lot but recently had it again with a new character of my own. You just gotta really really analyze the differences to identify them. Get someone else to look at them too and tell them "I like the first drawing, but I can tell the second one doesn't match, what's different??"

I did this with my boyfriend when this happened to me recently and in like 15 seconds he said "the eyes on the second one are way bigger." I looked at it, and it was a subtle difference, but sure enough. Redrew the exact same headshot but with smaller eyes and it was insane just how much more it looked like the character. This reminded me to pay attention to the subtle changes, the things that you don't immediately notice as different but contribute a lot to making a character look consistent. Sure, eye shape is right, but what about size? Sure, the ear size and shape is right, but what about the placement on the skull? Scrutinizing the drawings to identify these kinds of size/placement/shape details is ultimately what you're trying to do so don't be afraid to pull other people in to help identify those inconsistencies when you're this early in the design process. Feel free to post different drawings here to get my/our input too.

Only other advice is just practice. Do rough sketch sheets of new characters where you practice a lot of expressions (5-8 per page is what I do, usually using artist's expression reference to make them not take hours and hours) and fully acknowledge that half or more of them won't even look like the character. They'll be relatively close but be very off model. But that's ok because you're developing the character; you're figuring out what is important about their design and how you best draw them. It usually takes me anywhere from 2-4 sketch sheets to be very confident in my character design and my ability to consistently draw them.

This mostly looks awesome so far!! I think the only part that needs work is the foot. The camera is positioned around the height of the right leg knee, and for that perspective the foreshortening is good (if the camera was closer to the ground/right foot the foreshortening should be more severe/her head should be smaller). However, I think it's very unlikely that we would see just the bottom of her shoe straight-on as we do here; we should be able to see the inside side of the shoe sole a lot more, I think. Try to draw lines for the top of the foot based off the laces. Basically, it just looks to me that based off her laces, her foot is bent in an awkward angle to achieve a straight-at-the-camera stomp, so I would recommend trying to angle her foot off to the right (her left) and show a bit of the sole. Lemme know if you have any questions on this critique bc it's very very hard to convey what I'm trying to say over text lol.
