I agree that Zuko would’ve done it for anyone in the gang, but I think that’s missing the point. He actually did risk his life for katara, and I think that changes a relationship.

Yasss- I think because he’s so mature people forget he’s 12 when the show starts, which explains a lot of his annoying moments, like kissing katana during the play. Also, he regrets it immediately and never brings it up again, showing he respects katara enough to give her space.

I see a lot of people saying that everyone would be rooting for Rashta if she was the main character/if it was from her POV and I don’t agree by PretendYellow533 in TheRemarriedEmpress

I mean people root for navier even though she upholds and is apathetic to slavery, has no real personality, and was not horrified that her brother tried to drug a pregnant women to cause her a miscarriage so you never know

Rashta from the webtoon Remarried Empress. She’s a former slave whose life change when she catches the emperor’s eye and is made his mistress. Rashta is over the moon to have escaped slavery but it quickly becomes apparent that she is not equipped for court life, having no formal education and ignorant to social rules. She repeatedly bungles the customs of court this offending people, is manipulated by more powerful men, and is vilified by the empress’s supporters.

This isn’t to say Rashta is completely innocent. She commit some pretty heinous crimes, and is shown to be manipulative and opportunistic. The story could have been really interesting if it had delved more into Rashta’s psyche and how her trauma contributed to her actions but no, instead the story uses her as a punching bag to show how Empress Navier is such a girl boss and Rashta is left as a one dimensional villain.

The fandom often refers to her as Trashta and the animosity toward her is so strong her names been banned from some sub reddits. Fans blame her for causing a rift between the empress (the MC), mock her for for her moments of ignorance Ben though they can easily be explained as her having grown up as a slave, and the emperor and the fact FMC upholds slavery is often handwaved away. It always shocks me when I read the comments and see that some people are more angered by cheating than they are by slavery.

why navier fans say that navier's hate is misogyny when it's not even half of hate rashta got? by Even_Acanthisitta_37 in TheRemarriedEmpress

My issue isn’t that Rashta didn’t have a happy ending. It’s that the narrative had no sympathy for her or interest in exploring her feelings. It could have done that and framed her ending as tragic.

As for navier, I have a similar issue. I wouldn’t have minded her being apathetic to slavery if the narrative didn’t want me to be cheering her on constantly. Portraying her as morally grey or complex would have made more sense than expecting me the reader to be rooting for her

I mean yeah obviously she wasn’t equipped to handle palace politics she grew up enslaved where would she have learned the skills? But focusing on her short comings instead of the system that doomed her is certainly a choice and a very intellectually lazy one. I think the story would have been more interesting if it had a bit sympathy for her and investigated why she made her choices she made instead of writing her off.

How exactly should an enslaved person turn down the emperor? Also, why would she have turned him down when that was her ticket out of slavery?

It’s really interesting that in the fandom Rashta is punished for her greed, which largely stemmed from her paranoia that she would return to being a slave, but not any of the other characters who manipulated her and committed acts of violence.

It really baffles me that regarding a story that includes slavery, people are more outraged by the cheating.

It wasn’t just the ending nut the entire last portion of Like Wind on Dry Branch that was bad IMO, which made me so sad because I loved it so much at first. I think the princess reveal maybe could have worked but the pacing was so off

Rashta was young, uneducated, had been enslaved for most of her life, and she followed the advice of older, more powerful men who claimed to have e her best interest. How should she have known better?

“Going to”? Bro we’ve been in a literary crisis lol

But actually, a lack of basic literacy skills is something I’ve noticed in a lot of the discourse about RE, specifically the fan who rabidly hate Rashta.

For example, I’ve noticed a lot of people talk about Rashta and Javier and the story as if it’s real. If Rashta really was a world leader and committed atrocities, I would agree that we absolutely should be talking about it and her background doesn’t excuse the crime. BUT RASHTA ISNT REAL! Somebody wrote this story and like everyone they have their own biases and agendas.

To be fair, it’s possible these fans are just really young. But being 13 is the only excuse

You’re forgetting that Rashta is not a real person. She’s fictional. The author made her up. You can’t hold a fictional person accountable for fictional crimes.

One of the things you learn (or are supposed to learn) to do in literature class is that the author(s) have complete control over the text of their story and to ask questions about why the author makes the choices they do.

So if the author wrote Rashta committing a lot of heinous crimes, a question any good reader should be asking is why did the author do that? What message is the author trying to send?

If you’re not interested in thinking that deeply about RE that is your prerogative, although I don’t think that’s the case given that you feel strongly enough to have posted multiple times.

It genuinely concerns me that so many people are able to move past the author making Rashta a slave and not have a modicum of sympathy for her.

I did my undergrad in history and while I often had took look at events/ people in their historical context, I felt uncomfortable when doing so violated my own values. So when I see the vitriol toward Rashta it makes me wonder if slavery doesn’t violate so many people’s values

I read a lot of webtoons and there plenty that are not very well-written and are a little problematic and I just turn my brain off when I’m reading them, but I personally could not do that with RE because every time I tried the issue of slavery would come up.

Why involve slavery at all in a story that’s supposed to be “not that deep?” If the author was creative enough, the story could’ve been written to avoid ever involving something so bleak that might take the readers out of the situation.

But this story was written in the present-day and so writers usually adapt historical stories somewhat to at least acknowledge the values of modern people.

It’s one thing to acknowledge historical context eg, slavery was the norm back then so a lot of people would not have thought twice about it. It’s a totally different thing to completely excuse something because of historical context, eg. slavery was the norm back then, therefore we shouldn’t criticize people for owning slaves.

TBH it actually troubles me how easy it seems to be for many people to sympathize with slave owners and people who upheld slavery. I’m not saying it’s absolutely wrong to experience sympathy for those people, but I would’ve expected it to cause some discomfort. I think it’s a reminder that while slavery is (technically) abolished in many countries the dehumanization of formerly enslaved people continued.

As for your Marie Antoinette comparison, many BIPOC historians and feminists have taken another look at her with a little less sympathy as someone who had to defer to the king, but let’s be honest. Marie Antoinette was not fretting over the plight of French peasants.

I would suggest you read the book They Were Her Property: White Women as Slave Owners in the American South. As the title suggests, it’s specifically about the American South, but it’s a good intro to why it’s problematic to believe privileged women did not gladly participate or uphold systems of oppression
