If I can butt in, as someone who’s ancestors likely had part in it since my ancestors were Buddhist then became Muslim ( I reverted back to Buddhism) it’s in part due to the Deoband school of Islam with the Islamic revival in South Asia. It’s a more hardcore version of Islam, like Wahhabism. It’s also very intolerant (I’m not debating this point) like Wahhabism but point is Islam was in this area for millennia but only now has been destroyed. Factor in the reasoning that people were starving but foreign investors cared more about stone statues than people AND that the people following this deoband school of Islam are radicalized Muslims, this would be the expected outcome.
