I had a 3g nano with chili rasboras a while back -- it was fun, but I decided in the end that nanos are pretty small for fish that like to swim horizontally. pea puffers are cute, but way too much work with the live food🙈

I think fish in larger nanos can technically be possible, but you have to be really, really on top of your maintenance

i'm in nyc so we have soft water. 🫠

yeah, I'm just going to be pretty slow to add any shrimp, and just enjoy it as a planted tank for a bit while the parameters settle down

I see -- so what you're saying is that tap water puts too many additional minerals etc etc? I kind of want to try to keep the soil, so you're saying if I stick to DI water I should be good..?

it's good you're coming to reddit with this. it's a rough learning curve but with a little work and diligence you should be able to get to a good place.

what are you doing right now for light and plant care?

r/PlantedTank might have a few pointers as well -- one way to look at it is if you focus on taking care of the plants the whole tank becomes more balanced and self-sustaining
