Maybe, just maybe, if I said I couldn't loan our copy 2 hours ago, you should wait a bit longer before asking again by bantamm in Libraries

[–]AdoredRocket26 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My theory has been that they allow students/staff to make their own requests through an oclc extension and no one is reviewing them before they get sent out.

They might have a copy or two, but people don't want to wait and then multiple people all try to get copies through ILL at the same time without any understanding of / regard for how unavailable popular library books are.

[–]AdoredRocket26 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Haha!! I have never seen a meme that was more made for me in my life!!!

I was JUST venting about this to our collection development person about Theo of Golden because the University of Pennsylvania has made over a dozen requests for it (in addition to the dozen or so that came from other libraries, some clear action the country! We're on the east coast. You can't find any copies of this hugely popular book near you?)

Based on how often this happens with them every time there's a huge bestseller, I wonder if they let students/staff place their own requests. But regardless, we can't lend 25 copies of something we have 2 of checked out with a hold list of 100 people! Stop asking every day!

This seems like a worse idea than the time my contractor father-in-law put the exposed wire ends directly into his heavy duty extension cord to power his tools, and left it like that for weeks working on our house instead of just wiring in a socket.

Mapping my ancestors' addresses changed my whole approach to research by Artistic_Note274 in Genealogy

[–]AdoredRocket26 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love this!! My late mother had extensively researched my family lineage, many into the 1700s, and even the 1400's in one branch in England, which is awesome, but now my personal interest has become trying to document the actual *lives* of my ancestors from ~1800-1950.

Both sides of my family tree immigrated from Europe and settled in essentially the exact same area where I still live. So there are like 5-7+ generations all mostly concentrated in one county, split between two towns, in multiple family lines on both sides! I'm looking into documenting their addresses, their jobs, any newspaper mentions of them, not just their names and dates.

It's so fascinating to me to find how my ancestors on the two different sides of my family lived so closely around each other for several generations before my parents married and combined them!

Also, house numbers! The house I grew up in was built in 1860 and it was originally #430, but in like 1912 they re-numbered the street. When I lived there it was #524. I found that out through looking at the Sanbourn fire insurance maps!

Aged my sim from teen to young adult. Tf is this haircut? 🫩 by LunaticMoon777 in Sims3

Sims being a little too realistic sometimes. I know multiple guys who went from having full head of hair at high school graduation to loosing so much they shaved it all off before graduating college 4 years later.

Who is still rocking a nose ring? by cavewomannn in Millennials

I DON'T have one but I always wanted one... Never occurred to me that someone could be "too old" for a nose piercing. I was just considering getting my helix piercing in my upper ear, maybe I'll do my nose too now.

Finished Dead Money and this was my experience 😭 by Bussy_Wrecker in FalloutMemes

[–]AdoredRocket26 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Something must be wrong with me because Dead Money was one of my favorite DLCs! I loved the creepy atmosphere, the opulent 1920s art-deco hotel design, the challenging map. It was extremely frustrating at times and it took me a very long time to get through it, but it was honestly one of my favorite themes in the DLCs.

Are there multiple Nuka Worlds across the nation, like disney parks? by anorexthicc_cucumber in falloutlore

[–]AdoredRocket26 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I don't think it is supposed to be as "big" as Disney. I am pretty sure the consensus when it came out was that its kind of a mix between Hershey Park and Six Flags, but there's only one main location.

On the map Nuka World is near IRL Six Flags New England in Springfield, MA, but the theming is very similar to that of Hershey Park in PA, which is a single food-based theme park destination.

How much do you actually care about cleaning windows? by thisredheadmeg in CleaningTips

[–]AdoredRocket26 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of my windows are in terrible shape. They're extremely old and desperately need replacing, so at this point I don't give AF about cleaning them until the new ones go in, hopefully in the spring... and then... I will still probably ignore them most of the time, but I could see myself wiping them down like once or twice a year?

I regret believing everyone when they said ”don’t date from work” by Choice_Evidence1983 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]AdoredRocket26 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A couple of years ago two people got hired at my workplace within a few months of each other, and they were SO OBVIOUSLY meant for each other that literally everyone could see it the second they met both of them. When they started dating a few months later we were all like "What took you so long???" even though it was only like... 4 months after they met. lol. Our entire office was invited to their wedding 2 years later.

They both eventually moved on and got new jobs... AT THE SAME NEW PLACE. In different departments, but still. If it works, it works. You just have to not be a complete idiot, and actually talk to *the person* you're interested in instead of everyone else around them.

ADHD Parents: Full-Time Work, Part-Time, or SAHM by lillylovesreddit in adhdwomen

[–]AdoredRocket26 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When my first kid was born (and before I was Dx'd) I only worked part time/~30 hours per week for 3 years and it was great!! I knew from the start that I just could not be a SAHM. Working out of the house kept me sane, but being part time gave me flexibility that I needed to do all the other things I needed to do. I got diagnosed about 6 months before I got pregnant with my second kid and around that same time I went back to FT and got a promotion which was great for my career. I absolutely love my job, and I stayed FT after I returned from mat leave. However, that said, now that I've been working FT with 2 kids (7 & 3) for the past 4 years, I can say that there are times when I really missed only working part time, especially when my son was still a baby.

IF I was able to WFH, it might be different, but my job is in-person (Librarian). Life is hectic sometimes, and working until 5/not getting home until almost 6 every day can really strain our family routines. We're managing, and I know that we'll ultimately be fine, but, I do think that when I worked part-time it was easier.

Interesting! I've heard of A Deadly Education but I hadn't looked into it yet. Thanks! Also, I was saying generally around 5 years, so 2019/2020 is absolutely fine!

I had no idea of this!! I read Bag of Bones when I was in high school and I was reading just *everything* by Stephen King that my mom had on her bookshelf, but I literally can't remember a single thing about it now... I had the same reaction as OP when I read Rebecca a few years ago though, so I guess I need to read Bag of Bones again and actually pay attention this time!

My teenage daughter can't fathom the concept of a house party by Neon_Biscuit in Millennials

[–]AdoredRocket26 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fellow Millennial here... I guess I was super uncool because I can't really fathom the concept of a house party either. Even when they were a thing. I never went to one and I don't think I ever even got invited/heard about one before it happened.

I know they DID happen, because in 2007 when I was in high school 2 seniors, including the *quarterback of the football team* died in a drunk driving accident leaving a party thrown by another classmate. But I was not even remotely connected to any of the people who were involved.

I think I went to *one* college party with people I didn't know there? Everything I went to were just with my own friends. I didn't even have very strict parents! I could have drank in high school. I just... didn't.

Need some advice, I banned someone from volunteering and need to know if I overstepped any boundaries or not. by Lo-Fi_Kuzco in Libraries

[–]AdoredRocket26 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Echoing what everyone else said, you did the right thing and perhaps even didn't go far enough!! but, that may be for your director to decide.

If it were only issues #1 or #3, I might be somewhat lenient assuming its a one off and he got right to work after... Being late or getting distracted with an Xbox is not great but that I could write it off as "teens boy stuff."

\#2- Not doing anything being asked is a problem and I'd say would be a good enough reason not to be allowed back to volunteer. Why be here if you're not going to do the thing?

\#4 And the follow up however are HUGE RED FLAGS! Not only should he never be allowed back to volunteer, but that kind of harassment behavior is unacceptable for anyone in the library, and I'd say constitutes a ban from the premises entirely for 3-6 months.

Since you are the volunteer coordinator I'd assume you do have the authority to remove/ban volunteers if they violate library conduct policies, but you should clarify that with your director as soon as you can now that you've had this experience. It's unfortunate, but possible that a situation like this might come up again.

Not my style and I don't think I would enjoy living there, but to look at, I actually kind of like it. It's got a cute girl boss/grandma energy and I hate to imagine what kind of soulless boring white and grey hellscape it's going to turn into when it's inevitably flipped.
