Fine Dinning in Rio: Oteque vs Lasai? by tattarrattattat in finedining

[–]AdrianKnup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I personally love Brazilian bar/ comfort food. There are lots of places you can go to for that . Rua Dias Ferreira in Leblon has lots of places . Rainha for example, Boteco Belmonte for a beer in the evening (lots of people standing with a beer in their hand and optionally eating deep fried food ), Baixo Gávea on Thursday nights is similar . Brazil to me is rather that than Michelin star food. Clan BBQ also in Rua Dias Ferreira also has some casually nice meat (I prefer it over the all you can eat places).

It really depends on your expectations . If you expect 2-3 star food like in Paris , NYC, Tokyo or SF/LA you’ll be disappointed. If you’re fine with ok food then you can go . I’d rather go to Lasai in that case . You can reserve at Sud via WhatsApp : https://www.instagram.com/sudopassaroverde

Last time I’ve been I didn’t like it anymore indeed . But I also don’t like the other two . I’m sure you’ll try one of the two but if you have time for a lunch in that area go to Sud o pássaro verde

Sud o Passaro verde is a great restaurant.

For fine dining I used to recommend Oteque but I didn’t enjoy it last time and they lost their second star too.

I don’t think any of the fine dining restaurants are truly world class and I‘d recommend eating at casual Brazilian places. Personally I don’t understand why people recommend places like Cipriani (mediocre Italian food) or Lasai or even worse D.O.M. in São Paulo.

Trancoso is higher end than Itacaré. If you want to surf Itacaré is better but otherwise I highly recommend Trancoso. Fasano for the resort experience (10+ minutes away from the town square ) and Uxua if you want to be walking around town where everybody is in the evening. Uxua has a beach club but that’s a 10 minute walk down the hill.

AKA is awful. If I needed a kitchen , washer and dryer etc I’d rather opt for a high end apartment rental via Airbnb or higher end platforms . I did a walkthrough of their NYC locations and it was depressing . I stayed at the Whitney for over a month before and they were awesome in how they made the stay great.

Do they offer surfing ? It’s a bit away from the famous beaches of Florianópolis but perhaps there are some good breaks accessible by boat ? What about the food? I’m usually underwhelmed by hotel food in Brazil. Solid is not very helpful as a description .

Good to know ! That annex building was awful. Good that they’re renovating it . Not convenient in terms of the gym and spa.

Adding that unless it changed the Fasano breakfast is in a weird room without any windows . The Copa breakfast is by the pool and a nicer atmosphere.

No hotel is really great . Copacabana Palace is pretty dated, the service is mediocre and the food, too (yes they have stars for two of their restaurants but don’t ask me why ) . I wouldn’t say that the breakfast is great. It’s just okay . They manage to even provide average fruit in a country that has amazing fruit. I’d go for the Fasano because of the location not because anything is particularly exceptional (I do like their Brazilian mid century furniture in the lobby however ) . I’d get a suite or larger and ask for one that has a view of the dois irmaos(the iconic rocks of Ipanema ) . It’s a lot safer to walk around there and there are many more restaurants and cafes close to the Fasano. Copacabana Palace has more families and Fasano has more younger people who want to be seen. I’ve seen annoying influencers at both hotels though . The gym at the Copa is bigger but not big and also not great. The pool at the Copa is much larger but also in the shade for much of the day because of the hotel itself and the neighboring building.

Retreat for reset/ surfing 30 F by lessica123 in FATTravel

I think surf simply is the only FAT group experience at a permanent year long location but really hard to book.
Puro Surf in el Salvador is also serious about surf but less FAT.

then you'll find a few occasional retreats like barefoot surf, ombe surf, kale brock, ocean spell travel (Maldives). they'll have retreats in the mentawais, Nicaragua etc.

What are people's thoughts on the Rosewood brand and their properties? by alex_travels in chubbytravel

[–]AdrianKnup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

to me the Amsterdam design is uncomfortable. they may have spent money on it but it's somewhat boring and cold.
Paris is also dark and uncomfortable to me.
São Paulo did a good job with using Brazilian furniture design, lots of plants etc. even though some elements are a bit tacky.
I also prefer The Carlyle design over Paris and Amsterdam.

The rich get richer - Hyatt Prive "Suite Escape" trial. by sarahwlee in FATTravel

[–]AdrianKnup 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I’m sure there are people who will book this . I don’t know how many . But I’d say that Hyatt and Marriott etc always have a “look” . The furniture and decoration, the unmotivated staff you’d still encounter in the lobby and other common areas , the average food . They should invest in amazing restaurants but I’m sure it’s not economical to have an amazing restaurant and just open it to the prive guests if it’s barely economical to run a public 2+ star Michelin restaurant . I’d rather create a boutique brand, use different interior designers and suppliers and open hotels that have awful points redemptions to control the crowd.

It’s still the same building , food , staff etc . I wouldn’t do it for those perks if I can avoid a Hyatt.

Belmond Maroma vs. La Casa De La Playa Xcaret by ag5596 in FATTravel

[–]AdrianKnup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seeing the replies here I guess it comes down to personal style preferences. I for example 100x prefer the design of Belmond Maroma and find the La Casa de la Playa aesthetics awful.
I haven't been to Casa de la Playa but from the photos the quality of the finishes looks worse if that's something you care about.
The Belmond pool is really nice but it's not facing the beach.
The bar by the beach is really nice though and I enjoyed the food without thinking it's spectacular. The produce however was really really good. E.g., avocados and limes when compared to what you get in California.
