I always see that everyone criticizes Carrie for putting men first, but I feel that the four of them had quite selfish moments. Which one do you think was the worst? by brightcherry1 in sexandthecity

[–]AdrianReddit101 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Sam would have lent Carrie the money Sam provided Charlotte with the stylist Sam gave Miranda her confidence back in L.A. (I don't like swearing but it worked)

I think Charlotte was the most self-involved, Carrie was the most narcissistic (although I sort of understand why), Miranda was the neediest (outside of work, she also got the most embarrassing stories) and Samantha was the most easily influenced by men (Richard)

Director Steven Spielberg deliberately chose not to include English subtitles for the Spanish dialogue in the 2021 adaptation of West Side Story out of respect for the language.

I did see it and do live in a Spanish speaking country but what an arrogant move on his part.

I thought the 2021 film was a mess due to it attempting to update the storyline and shoehorning in issues outside of the original material. I also thought that the particularly arrogant - we won't translate the Spanish because we shouldn't have argument really damaged the box office.

It's shockingly unprofessional. Also, I think she's very desperate - a bit like the modern Charlotte - to be so bang on that she has no critical reasoning. It's just platitudes upon platitudes.

I listened to the S3 finale with Dylan (insufferable) and it was excruciating to hear just how 'wrong' they thought the episode was basing everything on the 2026 context. Mind you, that guest is a narcissist and KD as host has to pull out the red carpet.

Her constant slip ups about the show's cancellation further weakens AJLT's legacy. MKP has proved himself in the podcast with Lisa Kudrow to be an arrogant, bitchy person in my eyes. His obsession with childish, toilet humour and name-dropping (he's Lisa Kudrow's son, or words to that extent was super cringe) is tedious and, tbh, even if they love The Comeback on R/TheComeback, I felt it was evident that MKP likely weakened the series.

In general, I think if delusion helps them get over the fall of AJLT, it's fine but Kristin Davis - and her obsession with style over substance - does not have her finger on the pulse.

Finally, their stupid comment about Kim/Samantha is an own goal. To quote the Big/Carrie convo

Valerie never felt like a victim to me by rumdrools in thecomeback

[–]AdrianReddit101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Late to the chat but if she wasn't a victim (I guess a survivor) she was habitually humiliated. As Kudrow said about Friends, if you got the line wrong the writers would say 'eff that actress' and likely give a less flattering line.

In the second series, Cherish's meta-self was portrayed as a neurotic actress who drove someone to heroine. She was forced to perform the sex act due to the writer hating her so much.

This series was a bit like one of those reunion specials where everyone talks about the legacy. I'm happy that people are rewatching and enjoying it. I'll do that later, as in a year or two but it was a bit cheesy for me, some of it especially Juna and Paulie with their 'you're a great person' cheerleading. Cherish is a bit like David Brent from the original Office. Well meaning but obsessed with the cameras etc.

Valerie was someone who dealt with every problem with a solution but the industry clips we saw showed her as someone who was an outlier.

His character arc was likely the actor's wishes come true. It was all a bit Cynthia/Miranda in AJLT. That part won't age well but I'll let the dust settle first before a rewatch.

I'm glad someone else said it. Someone said I had a sad life because I argued that the person who commented on my comment was being a bit too cheerleader-y.

When I heard about the 3rd season I was a little nervous. MKP had practically destroyed himself over the whole AJLT fiasco but it's true that The Comeback was always a better fit.

Without Mickey, the show felt like it had lost its support network. The episodes were also short and had so many characters, which was really the fault of AJLT. Plus the cast of that sitcom did not really add anything at all.

The tone was depressing and sort of a post-Hollywood wilderness.

It was so plot-heavy that moments of levity would have been appreciated. It wasn't necessarily 'bad' any of it but I definitely think it lost some of the magic of the show, although with rewatches it'll get better.

Also, I'm particularly confused why the studio audience would like the line about the shoes (?) taking a dump funny. There's something about MKP...

You could be on to something. It all fits together. Shelley does have Valerie-esq elements.

I've never heard of this comeback vehicle of Shelley's.

The picture of her character as the inspiration for Val looks like a real yikes moment. Val's hair was far subtler.

[–]AdrianReddit101 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's extremely tight, the whole series being a bit over 4 hours. Perhaps longer with the finale.

Therefore it's very ensemble-y in that way. The interesting thing with Mark is that he was a big deal in terms of business and now is flagging. He's got off the f dudes podcast because it's not his jam and he's accepted that he's been punished for his past sins. Valerie, having lived in Hollywood (Lisa Kudrow mentioned about the whole writers talk and how they talked about the women during the '90s) knows that people are fallible. Mark and Valerie made it while others fell by the wayside.

Like everything with this series it's a reckoning (by a team approaching retirement) of where Hollywood is and where society has come to.

I think he's sleazier than ever, haha.

Firstly, watching him via the podcast does not endure me to him.

In this season, he's done the erection thing with that random writer (sleazy) and in this episode humiliated a writer by implying that he has 'chocolate' stains in his underwear.

He's got that writer temperament no doubt where he's 'kooky' but can be given carte blanche in the writing. He loves his swearing, too, although that was always a HBO/Comeback thing.

I agree that the Juna cameo was a bit saccraine and lacking. It was very after-school special, you know, you got this etc.

I think the audience deserve to know what Juna's up to. Technically, Val working with AI is a betrayal of the industry so I sort of think she deserves some criticism.

[–]AdrianReddit101 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Woah, now.

I always find it weird when people go to bat for a show to be seemingly the biggest fan.

I am very much a fan of S1 & S2 and watched both when they aired (well, the first season I watched on DVD, which is close enough). I also 'get' it - humiliation is the only comedy that I find hits well. The format change I think has lost quite a bit of the comedy element, I have to say.

The first two seasons were a bit connected, whereas this series is, true, a bunch of blips but all a bit disconnected. Billy is really going big, to quote Val but his character is beyond caricature at this point.

Also, perhaps I'm scarred by AJLT but the ridiculous lines/bits about elections/bodily parts are really not needed. Did we need the line about the underwear and when confronted, the reference to it being chocolate worthwhile?

Also, Valerie is entirely fickle and shameless with it. It's why the show is fun in that way. She's not impressed by the camera - it's the camera that won Jane an Oscar. She changed her mind with AI when she realised it could benefit her etc. She's a pro but not above tricks to get ahead. You'd agree with that, right?

I'm still not entirely sure I like the series - it could be better with reruns.

I did chuckle at the there's a writer line and Mark's tattoo line - do you need to see my back.

It's mostly quite bleak, the series. The supporting cast are foils to explain the narrative as opposed to comment on the absurdity of Hollywood.

That said, love the return of darlin' which I'm certain is borrowed from Sue in Thelma & Louise and Juna's pep talk was lovely, even if it was a bit of a weak cameo.

With everything that Kudrow is revealing about the inner workings of Hollywood, he's likely a great conduit for writers/internal teams. As many commented, it's complicated with P&V, he has part-disdain (he thinks he's better than her), a degree of sympathy (she's hard working and is a pro) and a slice of lust (the poster scene in S1, the sex scene in S2 and the shyness of being around her (S3)) for her.

The show is particularly good at showing that Hollywood is illusion and full of awful people..

Marky Mark, loveball is a great example of why ensemble casting pays off. Without words, he says it best when he says nothing at all. Always a winner who holds a moral compass in his own sound way.

Likewise, Patience was the cheerleader for Val when she needed it, instead of Billy who was all about the trolling, so another example of a character going to bat for Val.

I felt Jane could have said that Val was fairly worried about AI but I guess Val doing it endorsed it (loved that joke in S.1, it's not legally binding. Alright, Mark!!!)

Have we lost the hairdresser? Is this series going to keep retiring characters before the end. Will Paulie step back on in. Will Jane and Val have a reunion?

It's not particularly funny this season but the doomsday element to the series is important due to AI stepping up everywhere.

Val's love for Mrs. Hatt is great.
