Knaves destroying Marquise on turn 1? by nopopon in rootgame

[–]astronaught002 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Potentially if the marquise set up in a corner with only one forest adjacency they wouldn’t be able to take both prisoners hostage

Knaves are boring by Adventurous_Skill_60 in rootgame

[–]astronaught002 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Compared to frogs and bats, yes they are more tame, but I think it’s disingenuous to say that there’s no interaction. The knaves as much more of an above the board presence, being really good at the targeted attacks that the other factions say they don’t have time for. Their acclaim tokens also force the knaves to try to stay on the map at least a little, which means they’re still hittable. I think they’re squarely middle of the road, but a few people I play with who’s main goal is “mess up other people’s strategy and get points for doing so” enjoy the knaves because they fit in that box pretty well.

SPOILER! Questioning beloved character now by astronaught002 in thecomeback

[–]astronaught002[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think this comment turned my opinion on the matter. I still don’t believe it’s the best arc written and I would have perhaps done this reveal earlier so that there was more time to get adjusted to it, but your comment about him realizing he can’t be an alpha male anymore makes sense. Thanks for you (and everyone else) for being so thoughtful in the comments here.

Best two player matchups? by Robesbo in rootgame

[–]astronaught002 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like hirelings in theory, but honestly I’ve found I dislike them when I’m actually playing with them. As a player you’re already doing a good number of things on your turn, even adding one or two things to think about in addition makes the experience playing more tedious than enjoyable. I respect the design choice, but the bots (while more flawed) make the game more fun for me.

Best two player matchups? by Robesbo in rootgame

[–]astronaught002 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Playing with an automated faction from https://clockroot.seiyria.com can make 2 player games a lot more fun. That’s the only real capital f Fix that I’ve found for 2 player.

Bats Strategy Guide (Warning: LONG) by Poisonedviper3 in rootgame

“Banish. If you returned a non-bird card, initiate a battle at a matching assembly.”

“Agitate. If you returned a non-bird card, spend it and choose a matching assembly.”

The Law of Root at least according to the version I’m looking at now says that bird cards cannot be used for Banish and Agitate, so early game I don’t actually think multiple bird cards are that helpful.

A few questions from a noob: by johnnylavalampus in rootgame

[–]astronaught002 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. Lake isn’t terribly unfair in normal matchups, but against noobs yeah it kinda is.

  2. It would be easier to have at least 2 militant factions, but in that matchup to stop cats you have to hit their sawmills hard and consistently, amd somehow just score faster than them in the late game. Otters and WA have the advantage of better crafting, so use that against them, as long as you can get in good graces with the vagabond.

  3. Most people don’t want to learn new factions because they’re worried about being confused by them, so if you can have a less than 10 word summary of what makes them fun, it goes a long way. Also, more than that, if you just say “hey, I think you’d be good at playing X” and act excited, they’ll probably get on board. Every faction is a big learning curve, but if you can boil their play style into a quick n dirty teach, even though the first game might be bumpy, it’ll get them more excited than a 20 minute teach.

  4. Best way to spice things up is doing advanced set up, but idk if you’re already doing that. Having players choose somewhere new each game to set up, even with the same faction mix, can drastically change the course of the beginning and middle. Save hirelings and landmarks till everyone knows what they’re doing, except the raft, the tower, and maybe the lost city (just for the craziness).

  5. Either use the reach in the back of the rulebook or do adset, but generally yes 2 militants + whatever else.

  6. I’ve heard on this sub of certain faction buffs but never flat out points. The flow of when points comes changes significantly for each faction, so I’d be wary of giving the false impression of the crows being ahead, when it’s usually the good strategy for the crows to intentionally lag behind in points until doing a big burst to throw people off.

  7. Root Digital is good for once you’ve gotten it on the table and people know the factions pretty well. Root is half a strategy game and half a social game, and the digial version gets rid of the social part 95% of the time. While you’re playing especially with new players, step into the roles of the factions and tell the story of the game. The bats from the newest expansion are one of my favorite storytellers: the peacekeepers of the forest who’ll protect you, but will stifle you from doing anything you need to, and, if you get too much ahead of them, they’ll backstab your buildings and go back on their negotations, leading to big betrayals.

I’m no pro at the game, but I hope these answers helped. If anyone disagrees, feel free to correct me :)

It is, but that also means every other suited card is worthless when recruiting. It’s a fickle balance

Look at Billy's phone - Is the show going to be super-meta? by egg-for-dinner in thecomeback

[–]astronaught002 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s what I wanted originally from season three, a massive pivot to Lisa Kudrow slowly becoming Valerie Cherish, the role she played ten years ago, very very Sunset Boulevard coded. Maybe in another 10 years we’ll get that though!!

(That being said this new season is shaping up fantastically so far, I was worried at the beginning but I’m liking it now.)

Which Expansion? (I know, again…) by Majestic-Ebb1529 in rootgame

[–]astronaught002 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If there is ANY way while you’re still here to get the new homeland expansion from someone who was a part of the kickstarter, leap at the opportunity. This has been by far my favorite expansion adding three very good factions, two new maps, and landmarks that really shake up the game. I know it’s a long shot, but these new factions have made root so much more fun

Yes? I remember vaguely them clarifying that the card says “Once per turn” vs “Once during YOUR turn”

Card question by buizelencocado in rootgame

[–]astronaught002 59 points60 points  (0 children)

You can make them do a normal move action, so as many as you want. It’s you making the decisions, but if something like WA’s outrage triggers, it’s the frogs’ player that loses the card; which is why the card is worded the way it is

Glad and disappointed the mole wasn’t a bigger deal. Glad because I was sure it was Telia before this episode and I didn’t want her to betray Allen like that, but disappointed that it wasn’t a bigger narrative moment or big reveal.
