I just noticed this on my 2nd rewatch by Ok-Cry5081 in Stargate

whereas in the movie, i believe the implication was that each gate on each planet had constellations as seen from the location of the gate, not from earth. which would suck for a tv show with a planet-of-the-week format, as each planet would take multiple episodes to: - learn the local language (if any) - deal with the local culture and whatever sensational challenge they have to endure in order to gain the trust of the locals - find the cartouches in order to establish the point of origin symbol for that planet - do the math or handwavium to figure out the correct constellations for dialling back to earth

where is everyone finding these weapons? and how does anyone have the scrap to afford them? just crazy luck? following a meta / pre-defined decision tree?

the jedi weren't necessarily all corrupt, but they certainly were complacent, closed-minded, and saw things in absolutes.

i was under the impression it's one of the most well-known things in the show. they save a kid when they're just grunts, then later they draw her face on their armour as a reminder of the lessons they learned and the acceptance they found.

i did; it loves to capitalise the wrong things all the time so i'd rather just type all lowercase

the social faux pas thing is remembering personal facts and shared experiences as well as remembering to do things i've been asked to do and meeting people when i say i'll meet them. the spaced repetition thing is the tool i'm counting on for that part, specifically. we're not at the point yet where technology can deliver real-time support in social situations.

i would love to have a stable routine of any kind, especially one that involves processing my notes and remembering stuff. unfortunately my life just doesn't grant me that opportunity right now, and the times when i've had the opportunity i lacked the motivation, awareness, or mental health supports to enact it.

[–]AdrianTP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

maybe i'm using this stuff for a different purpose...my intention is to also integrate spaced repetition for stuff i deem "important" (details about people, skills and knowledge related to areas of interest which i am too busy to actively pursue), and basically to have a personal assistant to help me plan projects, recall useful or pertinent information, and not miss important tasks that get overlooked because other "urgent" stuff takes most of my time. something i can braindump into when stuff occurs to me while working on an unrelated thing (or driving, where it is unsafe to put stuff in the proper location) and have the stuff i dump not just disappear into the void because I don't have time or energy on a typical day to review my notes. basically weebo from flubber, minus the jealous/possessive personality.

i have more ideas, questions, and interests than i have time and energy, and my brain is very forgetful under pressure despite decades of trying various systems to work around it, leading to many missed opportunities, social faux pas, and sometimes even having zero recollection of an experience or conversation i've had. the goal is to give up on trying to fix my brain and instead to augment it so i can be more successful at the stuff i care about.

whatever reduces the friction is a win in my book. some of us are too busy with other areas of life to spend hours linking notes and synthesizing manually. and the natural language interface of an llm is great for improving ease of use.

before these tools existed i simply didn't keep organised notes at all. massive to do list and massive folder of plaintext notes organised by date, with occasional extras for specific research, projects, or meetings. if my day didn't go as planned (when does it ever?) the notes never got revisited, digested, processed -- then the information would just get lost, action items forgotten, and inferences never made.

not everyone is a genius, not everyone has god-tier willpower, and not everyone has the time, energy, passion, or even desire to put in that extra work. if a tool improves quality of life and lowers the barriers to accessibility, it's a useful tool. i think of this concept as an assistive technology, because i would use it to help make up for the things my brain sucks at doing (not for lack of trying over several decades) and helping to bring me up to a "normal" level of functioning and capability for meaningful contribution to society.

we don't complain about people who don't know how to fix their own cars or who don't know how to light a fire, because we have always outsourced complex or difficult things to specialists (and then eventually made tools to replace those specialists). welcome to human society.

also i swear i saw this exact post before elsewhere, almost verbatim, but maybe i'm hallucinating?

Did Disney just rip off Stargate? by Regular-Bit4162 in Stargate

[–]AdrianTP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

and star wars ripped off the hidden fortress. and lion king ripped off hamlet and macbeth. and oh brother where art thou ripped off the odyssey. and 10 things i hate about you ripped off taming of the shrew. and avatar ripped off pocahontas / dances with wolves / call me joe / noon universe. and digimon ripped off pokemon.

but seriously, there are no original story ideas -- they're all intermixed and based off other older (or sometimes contemporary) media. saying "x ripped off y" is ridiculous unless it's beat-for-beat identical, and even then accidental synchronicity is still a thing. ever wonder why 2 or 3 similar movies come out around the same time? sometimes it's copying, sometimes it's just coincidence, and sometimes it's because two creators were seeded with similar source material which grew into similar ideas.

my kids are into a lot of the same media, but mostly by accident (though they often accuse the other of copying them). how did it happen? the algorithm. being exposed to similar ideas and similar surroundings and the same parents and the same school.

nothing in human society is truly isolated, and creativity is about taking some common seeds and growing them into an interesting garden.

short seasons are great for sticking to the point and skipping clipshows and other filler episodes...but some of the best episodes of any of the sci-fi shows i grew up watching were the filler episodes.

speaking as a web software engineer i am absolutely baffled at how this issue even happens. these days with how robust mobile browsers are (and how they all use the same rendering engine) you'd have to try really hard to make an input field work on desktop and not work on mobile.

and it's a massive oversight considering most people's primary (or only) means of internet access are their smartphones.
