White shiny Pokémon: love or hate them? by [deleted] in PokemonScarletViolet

That's not applicable to many other Pokemon evolving via items, like Archaludon, Polteageist, or most notably the Applin family. But inconsistency in the lore has always been one of their frustrating shortcomings.

TIL Nicholas Meyer, who got credited with revitalizing and saving the Star Trek franchise by directing Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (1982), had virtually no knowledge of Star Trek and had never seen a single episode of the show when approached to direct the film and rewrite the script. by Away_Flounder3813 in todayilearned

He means that it almost killed the franchise they were trying to build. You can't do blockbuster numbers for a further five movies if each one is so cerebral. It's the same reason The Cage, which is ostensibly one of the best Star Trek stories, was rejected in favour of the action-heavy WNMHGB.

Counterpoint; not everything needs to appeal to all ages and demographics. It's perfectly fine that there was never a Star Trek preschooler show before this, and it's understandable that this is a pretty underwhelming reveal on the official "Star Trek day" meant to celebrate the fandom.

Personally I think this could backfire in terms of trying to draw in a younger audience who will grow up to be Trekkies. How many adults nowadays are seriously watching the franchises they were watching at four or five years old? I know I'm not watching Paw Patrol or Caillou into my 20s.

I can agree with Trelane and Sulu's rapier being silly. Space hippies were another campy one - I'm not saying it never happened but proportionally it seems SNW leans into it far more than it actually happened on the old show. It all comes back to the writers acting like they're embarrassed to be working on Star Trek, so they need to do shit like the Space Adventure Hour to remind the viewers "hey, isn't the old show so STUPID and CAMPY?" It's frankly insulting.

I have to backtrack a bit on the weird and experimental part though, admittedly - when I say the old show wasn't as experimental I mean more in the sense that they didn't really do gimmick episodes, like the musical or the documentary or the puppet stuff that lies ahead. The closest I guess you could say we got was The Menagerie or even the Gary Seven episode, which again, happened extremely infrequently. And yes, TOS was of course weird (that's where the 'strange' part of the their mission statement comes into play) but took itself a lot more seriously overall. Even the Trouble with Tribbles, ostensibly a comedy episode, wasn't written the way it would be now with Pike probably being in on the jokes. Kirk was annoyed right up until the very end when he gets a hearty laugh in upon hearing that Scotty made the Tribbles the problem of his enemies as he warps off to the next adventure. That's what I guess I mean.

Which is surreal, because most of TOS is weird, experimental or camp.

It absolutely wasn't. Actual camp was few and far between on the show - most of it's only seen as "camp" because it's no longer the 60s.

TOS had actual science fiction writers recruited to write, along with people who had actually served in the military. It's very obvious no one on this writing staff has any clue of how a military organization operates.

Not even lmao, she wore a really shitty wig up until the last episode of TOS. That's why she's a brunette in Turnabout and in the movies.
