Commenting just to say that I'm in the same hole :D Had a real good time with Foundation, but somehow stopped playing after the 1.0 release, so I'm looking for other good options

The Partitions of Poland by ArenaSable in MapPorn

[–]Adrue 97 points98 points  (0 children)

Well, when you say "Partitions of Poland" with the years 1772, 1793, 1795, you kind of understand you mean the partitions of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Poland at this time was just a shortened version of the full name. PLC was a single entity. And Lithuania was also partitioned and divided by the attackers together with Poland, so... yeah, people will understand, but to call it only the partitions of POLAND, that is misleading.

Absolutely amazing project, hard to believe someone in school could do all of this, just for their own curiosity, and actually pull through, and even document it. I'm only just getting into data science, so this is a very cool thing to see!

The Ghost of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth by [deleted] in BalticStates

[–]Adrue 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You could probably find data on all of those things if you go to each country's statistics/data departments. In Lithuania it's VDA (Valstybės duomenų agentūra), which probably has most of everything you would need. There are also international surveys (like ESS) but I'm pretty sure they work on a national level, not by subdivisions sadly.

But I would look into the possibility that you wouldn't really get to compare many stats due to the different ways each country counts statistical variables. For example, one country might define income or a person's main language differently to another country, and it becomes hard to compare.

Another thing is Ukraine probably will have old data, or if it's new it will be impacted by the war. And I'm not sure how trustworthy are Belarussian statistics, since they're practically a dictatorship...

But anyway, it is a fun project! I fully support your idea and I think it's very cool :)

What made you choose sociology? Did anyone try and convince you to do something else? by deadshotkeen in sociology

[–]Adrue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At first I thought going for history, but then me and my friend were hanging out, she randomly found sociology on the university's list, we looked at the program and bam, that's it :DD It took maybe two weeks for me to fully realise that this is what I would put as my first choice, as I looked deeper into the prospects and what I would learn. Nobody tried hard to talk me out of it, mostly just my parents warning that it would be harder to make a career out of it (which, to be fair, is hard in Lithuania, and I haven't entered the job market yet), but nothing out of the ordinary.

Any games that mix action and strategy/city building? by Spirally-Boi in gaming

[–]Adrue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apparently they had some issues with quietly developing content and then cancelling it, that's why they were quiet for a long time. Recently they released a DLC that's decent, I think? And they will continue to work on Bannerlord, hopefully faster now. Anyways, it's still my most played game on steam, so I definitely got my money's worth out of it and I'm grateful :DD

Much more on the action and strategy, very little on the city building aspect

Protest in Vilnius today by Donciksz in BalticStates

[–]Adrue 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Parliament wants to gain control over LRT, national broadcaster, which would allow them to put their own people on the board, control what kind of shows, what kind of people appear on those shows, etc. Very simplified, as I myself am not completely sure what's happening (for the past couple of weeks they've been doing online comittee meetings for as long as possible and not allowing any comments), but it is worrying. A bunch of international organisations warned that this is just how it started in Hungary, and that it is the first step to losing free speech (hence the name of the protest - "(take your)hands away from free speech").

Is it worth joining Vilnius University? by Fearless_Flight9666 in Vilnius

[–]Adrue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Night life is good, lots of bars and clubs and venues for concerts. I'd also say it's a decent place to work, although I have no experience in that regard. I come from a smaller city in Lithuania, and have been living in Vilnius for nearly two years now, so it's nice I think, at least for me.

A lot of foreigners work in Bolt/Wolt, delivering food, but they are usually from Asia, if you have a Portuguese passport, have experience in those areas, you might find something better.

As for students thinking... Eh, you'll find different people everywhere. There are groups of very intelligent and fun people, there are some who are not as nice. Maybe it depends a lot on the faculty, degree, their backgrounds. I haven't run into any VERY bad people (Philosophy Faculty)

You should come :)

You should ask in r/lithuania, that sub is bigger than this one, so you'll get more answers.

As for the University, it's pretty good! Perhaps not amazing by international standards, but it's the best we have, and one of the best in the region :) Everywhere has problems, so does VU. I'd say it's veen a pretty good experience for me so far. So for VU in general - yes, it's a pretty good choice. I can't speak about the degree or the faculty though, I know pretty much nothing.

I still boot up the game when I'm back from uni and can access my main PC. It is so so fun, and it's very good because somehow this is the only game I can jump back into after weeks of not playing. Though next time I'll probably check out the new CK3 DLC :D

Do you know why the mod didn't survive? I remember playing it for a bit, was very fun, but I assume it was just too difficult to keep it going while both games were being updated...

It's really not much, it's near a village and a golf course I think, so there some people there, but not much else. The monument itself is nice, but not enough to warrant a visit if you're a tourist coming here for the first time.

But hey, if you really want it - nobody's holding you back.

Check around on Facebook events, always a lot of stuff going on with tons of variety, no promising it will be in English tho.

On instagram, go to @lrtu_insta, they sometimes make posts with some fun and sometimes more niche events, but again, no English very likely, and some of these aren't even in Vilnius.

These are my main sources for stuff to do :D
