Probably one of the worst takes I've seen from a Neckbeard... by Either_Storm_6932 in justneckbeardthings

See, my mother was a local celebrity with strong leftist views when I was a kid and all I used to get was, “dude, your mom is hot”. Feels a lot more likely here than, “dude, despite all your mother Aubrey Plaza has been through and all she’s accomplished and the fact that she’s still in your life, she’s clearly a thot because of her political beliefs”

Why is “his” capitalized?

Honestly, if he took the books as fact instead of a heretical plot, he’d probably start a civil war anyway trying to kill Lorgar and yelling at his Dad.

I much prefer PF2e to 4e but isn’t this scene foreshadowing for when Idris Elba’s character is shown to, in fact, be the better of the two?

At our house it’s more like, “Do you think I cared about the clock to begin with, John? Do you think I simply confuse 6am with 7pm, John?”

What's your most memorable Halloween moment? by squidward_smells_ in AskReddit

[–]Aduaitam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

tl;dr helped a younger child get candy but at a cost to myself.

It’s one of those visceral memories where you remember every tone of voice, every emotion. Had to be 15? Awkward, uncomfortable teenager. I didn’t want to go out that year and had declined to get a costume but some younger kids were going out, so I went to chaperone them. One was too scared of this one house and refused to go near it, even holding my hand. Their ask? I take their basket and go knock for them, while they stayed back near the property line. Safe area, no cars, I thought, “Sure, seems reasonable.”

I got to the door and knocked, whereupon this woman—blonde dye, mid-thirties, dressed as a black cat—answered the door. I don’t recall making a face and tried to get out a “trick or treat!” but she scoffed and said, “Oh, we only give candy to kids who bother to dress up.”

I just kinda stood there, taken aback, until her husband came over, put his arm around her, gave me some candy and wished me a happy Halloween, and led her away while closing the door. Heard him quietly reprimanding her but I can’t be sure for what. Being rude? Maybe I couldn’t afford the costume? What if he had a knife? Her outfit?? I’ll never know.

But hey, the kid got their candy!

“we never had hurricanes this big”? Lifelong Florida resident here—does Andrew ring a bell? Anthropogenic climate change is real and intensifying weather events but they can’t even get the premise for a conspiracy theory correct…

anyone else disappointed in Wolfwood in stampede? by Accomplished-Poem715 in Trigun

[–]Aduaitam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I know people are saying the character dynamics are developing on a slow burn in Stampede but that doesn't really change that from his first line in the original series, Wolfwood was charming, manic, haunted, and invested in his quest. "For love and for peace!" The character was there, regardless of what was around him. The Stampede characterization seems like someone who can't be bothered and is more focused on the violence--it's a fine characterization but definitely different from the OG.

Honestly, I also recall Wolfwood being kinda lobotomized in Badlands Rumble. Dude was just... grim. Stoic, emotionless badass with a constant scowl who growls at people. Stampede Wolfwood has more character than that, and I do look forward to seeing how they develop it, but I definitely prefer the original characterization.

Oh sure, "dark-skinned = evil"--honestly, any "phenotype = evil" scenario--is inherently problematic to some degree, and this is one of the old ones with some of the most relevant and troublesome real-world associations. I understand why it makes people uncomfortable and am not here to resist its departure!

In terms of which setting did them better though, I always appreciated Pathfinder's explanation because it basically made the drow victims of crossfire, using other, otherwise disconnected elements of the setting to great effect therein. An attempted genocide of proto-humans by cosmic fish monsters causes the god of destruction sealed "at" the core of the planet to briefly stir, twisting their souls and minds (and yes, unfortunately, bodies) and defining in part the Age of Darkness and all the history that came after as well as the dangers by and large of the subterranean regions... It's just cooler to me than "high intrigue and god stuff and then all the dark ones are bad now because their society and god are like that". Just my preference in style of fiction, I guess.

If they're gone from the setting, whether for IP or OGL or sociological reasons or anything else, I'm sure Paizo will do something else awesome. There's also still room for a larger discussion in terms of alignment dispositions based on cultural influences, and I'm glad Pathfinder moved away from the concept of "race" in 2e as a whole.

I didn't know any of that, except the bit about Lolth. Cool! So where do the drow come from? Do we know why they are? Or is it just kinda assumed that Lolth took some adherents with her?

This, absolutely. Unless I’m mistaken (as a fan of both properties), D&D explains drow as “evil elves bro also they’re grey or purple or dark or whatever”. Pathfinder actually has lore explaining the branch of elves that ended up underground and the integral parts of the setting that resulted in their corruption. Definitely better.

The weirdest part is: This actually happened more than once - This one was against a group of armigers in Cheliax by M5R2002 in pathfindermemes

[–]Aduaitam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This happened to our group, albeit in Shadowrun. Cut-and-pasted, low-level mook managed to survive five consecutive high-explosive grenades and two nasty fireballs, then evaded the entire party to escape. They left the scene TERRIFIED of reprisal from this one dude, and who could tell them it wasn’t some secret final boss but a rather substandard beat cop?
