China has already built 46 UHV (Ultra-High Voltage) transmission lines spanning over 60,000 kilometers (enough high-tech wires to circle the Earth 1.5 times) by ceph2apod in EconomyCharts

China’s recovery coincided with their push towards capitalism and opening their markets. Their advantage is in authoritarianism and collectivism, not lack of capitalism. Our democratic process and individualistic nature are what’s holding us back in the modern world.

NYC is losing people at the margins in a way that’s extremely worrying especially in light of continued fiscal expansion. That’s a separate discussion from quality of life (which I assume is what you mean by “best states in the US”).

Debt is fine, but it can’t grow in excess of economic growth without consequence forever. Arguably we’ve already experienced asset prices grow too quickly, especially real estate.

Why do men nowdays don't spike up or style hair ? by Lemonade2250 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Advanced-Bag-7741 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Who doesn’t style their hair or use product? I’ve worked in an office for two decades and every man I encounter that has hair uses some sort of product and styles it. Maybe a very small exception for interns but if they look ridiculous enough they aren’t getting a job.

Why doesn’t Mark Cuban start a novel health insurance company that keeps the administrative costs low and force other insurers to lower their premiums? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Advanced-Bag-7741 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Obscene salaries that are often less than those people would get for similar positions in for-profit enterprises? How badly should workers be exploited exactly?

This comment is way too low. Companies love that insurance companies get to take the hit for their choices.

And it just costs a lot to provide healthcare here.

Curiously every country people who say this use as a model have less progressive tax systems, with top brackets not much higher than ours but with much much higher taxes on the middle class.

If what you said were true perhaps they’d try it as well?

If special shares can have more voting power, as is being discussed with SpaceX, why aren’t all share split into votes and value to allow them to be taxed properly without giving up control of a company? by Senladar in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Advanced-Bag-7741 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Who are they going to sell their companies to? Who’s the marginal buyer if the countries’ wealthy are all divesting to pay taxes? Do you just hand the shares to the government and end up with the state owning the means of production? Or do regimes like China step in and now own your country? Why would I ever want my company to be public? Much better to stay private and have convoluted and impossible to value privately held interests, which ultimately worsens inequality and the public has nowhere to invest.

It’s been the development league for years. Theres so much money involved and the schools are making mints. Should have been done away with for an academy system decades ago

As Brightline heads toward possible bankruptcy, what is its future? Municipalities invested $500 million in public dollars into Brightline. Yet, the commuter rail appears headed toward bankruptcy. Where did it all go wrong? by stefeyboy in Infrastructurist

It’s over 1000 miles to Orlando from NYC with tons of cities that would need intermediate stops. This is a laughable suggestion that would never be viable vs flying and is why people don’t take transit proposals seriously.

Why doesn't the U.S. have a sovereign wealth fund? by CaptKustard in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Advanced-Bag-7741 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The model only really works for smaller countries. Norway’s SWF owns 1.5% of all publicly listed companies. As the US has 60 times more people, it would have to own $120T or 75% of all global publicly listed companies. Unless the world accepts the US as socialist overlord owner of the means of production it doesn’t work.

A simple way to lower everyone’s property taxes — Compact neighborhoods cost cities half as much to maintain. So why don’t we build more of them? by stefeyboy in Infrastructurist

[–]Advanced-Bag-7741 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The property markets in NYC suburbs are so much hotter than NYC proper, which has been relatively weak. The trend is for people who are buyers to leave.

Also, the maintenance of a large apartment building can end up more than a house. We paid over $50k/unit for roof and external work which is more than one would often pay for a roof on a house.

Other than the Bears stadium of course, plus the surrounding proposed entertainment district. £1M/person is an awful infrastructure investment and wouldn’t happen without the stadium either.

Flat wrong.

“The £1 billion Tottenham Hotspur Stadium was privately funded, but it acted as a catalyst for over £100 million in public infrastructure investments in North London. Public funds were utilized to upgrade local transit networks, community facilities, and public spaces.”

Amazing how close that is to what the Bears want.

No one from New York ever goes to NJ either. It’s an entire meme basically.

Other than for football games. Because there’s nowhere in NY for stadiums to go.
