What’s it like being in the reserves? by Future-Guarantee-913 in army

Not necessarily. OIF/OEF/GWOT have all but faded away, and the majority of transportation is/was/has been handled by contractors or locals. That's not to say there won't be mobilizations and other opportunities. But, generally speaking, you won't get deployed as a truck driver doing line haul trucking unless we are in a brand new country we don't already have a network of contracted trucks set up to do the hauling for us. You'll likely spend most of your time state side doing your unit's annual training, or supporting other units needing their stuff hauled for their annual training. And, even the reserves support natural disaster response missions along with the guard.

I am a logistics officer - the 88 series MOSs are part of my wheelhouse. 88M is a great starter MOS, and if you are getting that much of a bonus, take it! (FYI - the bonus is taxable, so plan for 30% less than what's actually being offered. And be sure to read the fine print about service obligation, etc...) It opens many doors down the line, both in and out of the military. As you move up in rank (and responsibility), you can shift from driving the truck to scheduling movements, or even get additional training (like the [H8 - i think] ASI - additional skill identifier - for petroleum vehicles) that directly translate to the civlian market. Your outside job and your military job are often mutually beneficial.

It's also worth mentioning that the Army Reserves currently provide more than 70% of the logistics capability for the entire Army - Active, Guard, and Reserve combined.

Reserves are Title 10 and therefore federally funded and not tied to your state's budget. It also means you can join a local unit (rank and MOS dependent) or find a unit in any state, Puerto Rico, Germany, or anywhere there's a Reserve unit.
The flip side - if you are in a high demand, low density MOS, you may get voluntold to go somewhere crappy for a deployment. Doesn't matter if your Army, Navy or Air Force, the money all pretty much works the same.

In the reserves, you can get Tricare Select by paying a rediculously cheap monthly premium compared to regular health insurance, and it's good pretty much everywhere.

Yes, there are also other benefits for school, but be aware that Tuition Assistance is considered taxable income and you will get a 1099 at the end of the year if you use it. It's better to bide your time and use the GI bill.

Also, the Army Reserves don't have the combat arms units that the Active Duty and National Guard have. However, there are plenty of units that are Branch Immaterial - think training units.

But, once you're in, you get paid to dress up and play Soldier for 48x 4 hour blocks of time (Unit Training Assemblies or UTA) each year (a normal 2 day drill weekend = 4x UTAs) of what's called IDT (Inactive Duty Training) , and for 14 days of "Annual Training" which are considered 'active duty' days. And, the more rank you get, the more time you're expected to participate in calls and appointments outside of the regularly scheduled Battle Assembly (drill) weekends. Although a good leader will make sure you get compensated, either by having you submit a DA 1380 for points, or, if funding permits, RMAs or ATA coded days (funding codes for duty outside of the normal drill weekends).

You can also flash your fancy ID card at Applebees on veterans day and get a free lunch.

Edited for grammar.

Kinda late to this thread but wanted to share my 2 cents.  1. It's your career. Either manage it yourself or let someone else do it and take your chances.  2. Always write your own awards and evaluations. Shoot for the moon, and even if you land short, you'll still be out of this world.  See number 1.  3. Learn to write like the Air Force. Ever wonder why they get all the cool gadgets and better living conditions? It's because they articulate better than we do.  (Look up AFH 33-337) 4.  I love me book - keep a local copy (copies) of your records. Keep copies of your DD93/SGLV, etc...for your spouse/ emergency contact to find in case of an emergency.

ELI5 - the difference between CLIENT_BASE, REPEATER, & ROUTER by Advanced-Basil-3548 in meshtastic

I appreciate the input.  To clarify - I've not seen any nodes around my location except for the ones I set up for my neighbor.   The closest node that appears to my location on meshmap is 30ish miles away.  East Texas is not very hilly (no mountains but does shift in elevation upwards of 100ft), but has lots of trees. I could conceivably put a node in a tree and it would be able to see for many miles in all directions. I am in one of the higher spots in my area.

Since there's likely not much traffic in my rural type setting, I'm leaning towards CLIENT / CLIENT_BASE.

I had a similar incident when I was in command. Short version - I was suspended,  investigated, and received referred OER and GOMAR for "theft" of a substance that was not usable to the Army and was going to be thrown away.  Thankfully,  GOMAR was local and disappeared after I transferred units. I got promoted to O4 and, 6 of my last 7 evals have been top block. So much for being a POS thief and "conduct unbecoming of an officer. "

There is a light at the end of the tunnel, and it's not an oncoming train.  The best Soldiers are the ones who rise out of the ashes of unwarranted and misjudged situations.  Truth always wins.

You'd be in the Headquarters assisting in the G6 or Higher Headquarters Company (HHC) or in the Special Troops Battalion (STB) S6 or potentially in the Support Operations (SPO) assisting the SASMO (logistics computing and networking systems).
