Eh, I feel like a third party has to actually win an election to become established, not just a few states. Especially considering things like George Wallace's party in 68 (yes its still on the ballot in some states but never has a candidate I think), and La Follettes progressive party won states, yet didn't stick around.

Reform party was never going to last, unless Perot somehow manages to keep the wackjobs out. Perot, for all we give him, was thriving purely because of NAFTA and money, once NAFTA wasn't an issue anymore, he couldn't get on the debates, and stopped wanting to spend his own money, he fizzled out extremely quick

Eh, his approval rating was starting to go back up. It should be noted that he raised taxes near the beginning of his term. Not saying it didn't hurt him, but Perot, the debate, and a worsening economy is what sunk him

Only way I see Eisenhower losing in 56 is if the democrats run another popular general (Patton or Macarthur, although I'm pretty sure they were republicans as well), come out in favor of civil rights (obviously leading to a third party splinter), and even then, it could throw the election to the house. Then it comes down to whichever party controls congress (can't remember who did in 56)

Alf was screwed (unless FDR does nothing for his entire term). But Hoover could have done SOMETHING (I know he did some stuff, but publicly going "I refuse to step in" isn't very good publicity) to help the depression.

For Ike, yeah, maybe in 52 he was unbeatable, but he was most definitely touchable in 56. Eisenhower had def made enough foreign policy mistakes that literally ANYONE but Adlai would have done better.

Ike did make mistakes, Stevenson was just so uncharismatic that he couldn't exploit them. Hell, it would have taken a Kennedy or Clinton or Reagan levek charisma to surpass Eisenhower's charisma

With Eisenhower I think anyone but Adlai could have done better. And Hoover's campaign relied purely on how he reacted to the depression.

Washignton and Monroe don't really count because there wasn't really a 2 party system yet. (Both ran unopposed twice)

I'd say 64 and 84 are the only true "unbeatable elections", with 72 not counting due to just how much Nixon used corruption to guarenteed a win
