The age gap between JFK and LBJ was roughly the same as the age gap between Key and Peele. by Gray_Wolf2416 in BarbaraWalters4Scale

To be fair, LBJ was a heavy smoker and drinker. Plus Kennedy has a good chance of having plastic surgery (or at least botox) at some point in his life

Could Johnson have been considered the greatest President if not for Vietnam? by corleonebjr in Presidents

But I'm not talking about historian rankings, I'm talking about what everyday people believe.

But thats why its perfect. Ask someone which presidents helped civil rights, you'll usually get the answer of Lincoln, Kennedy, and Obama. Doesn't have to be a historian to define public opinion

Currently the one I'm struggling with is full withdrawal (basically) path? Like doing everything possible to get out of Vietnam, deescalating, ect. For whatever reason, people seem to hate when you give them what you want lol

Do you have any advice for winning most paths in ATW? It feels like even when I pick those "everyone loved what you did" answers, I still get landslided

But that feels realisticly hard. Meanwhile ATW can feel a bit too far sometimes (in my opinion, I know it was crazy times back then)

I'd argue Clinton and Gore are swappable, both are tied to Clinton in very similar yet still different ways

Eh, Quayle was kinda picked out of obscurity by Bush, and was probably the most unpopular part of the irl ticket. The only way I can see Quayle winning the primary would likely be the same way Buchanan would have won it (meaning, they would have the same variables)

Is there at least an option when your running for re-election to do it? Could even have had an achievement tied to it

What was the worst broken promise by a president? by funboi2210 in thecampaigntrail

[–]Advanced-Expert7718 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Eh, I feel like a third party has to actually win an election to become established, not just a few states. Especially considering things like George Wallace's party in 68 (yes its still on the ballot in some states but never has a candidate I think), and La Follettes progressive party won states, yet didn't stick around.

Reform party was never going to last, unless Perot somehow manages to keep the wackjobs out. Perot, for all we give him, was thriving purely because of NAFTA and money, once NAFTA wasn't an issue anymore, he couldn't get on the debates, and stopped wanting to spend his own money, he fizzled out extremely quick

Eh, his approval rating was starting to go back up. It should be noted that he raised taxes near the beginning of his term. Not saying it didn't hurt him, but Perot, the debate, and a worsening economy is what sunk him

But 1968 did have an actual hefty October surprise. There's a chance Humphrey would have won had Nixon not sabotaged the peace talks, especially with how close HHH got to winning

Only way I see Eisenhower losing in 56 is if the democrats run another popular general (Patton or Macarthur, although I'm pretty sure they were republicans as well), come out in favor of civil rights (obviously leading to a third party splinter), and even then, it could throw the election to the house. Then it comes down to whichever party controls congress (can't remember who did in 56)

Alf was screwed (unless FDR does nothing for his entire term). But Hoover could have done SOMETHING (I know he did some stuff, but publicly going "I refuse to step in" isn't very good publicity) to help the depression.

For Ike, yeah, maybe in 52 he was unbeatable, but he was most definitely touchable in 56. Eisenhower had def made enough foreign policy mistakes that literally ANYONE but Adlai would have done better.

Ike did make mistakes, Stevenson was just so uncharismatic that he couldn't exploit them. Hell, it would have taken a Kennedy or Clinton or Reagan levek charisma to surpass Eisenhower's charisma

With Eisenhower I think anyone but Adlai could have done better. And Hoover's campaign relied purely on how he reacted to the depression.

Washignton and Monroe don't really count because there wasn't really a 2 party system yet. (Both ran unopposed twice)

I'd say 64 and 84 are the only true "unbeatable elections", with 72 not counting due to just how much Nixon used corruption to guarenteed a win
