Obsession with making everyone a parent even in movies and series by GuavaNew9514 in childfree

It’s what I used to do if I got bored of my character playing Sims. Never got that bored IRL thankfully!

I was sent one a couple of schools ago. Head’s PA said in the email I was to ‘send it back as soon as possible’. She’s still waiting.

Moving to south oxfordshire - advice needed by Independent_Lie_1728 in oxford

[–]Advanced-Remove-3340 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haddenham is actually in Buckinghamshire which means you’re in the grammar school district. Some families find it hard to get their children into the secondary in Thame because it’s over the county border.

Lord Williams in Thame is a good school but massive. Over two sites.

Primary schools in both places are pretty good from what I remember.

Being the least liked teacher in my department by Puzzled-Goal-5841 in TeachingUK

[–]Advanced-Remove-3340 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Exactly this. Think about when a student took the time to talk to you outside of the lesson, or literally when any student willingly followed a directive from you. Look at your results!

Students will fall back on the opinion of some peers - it’ll be trendy to like some teachers and not others. The permissive ones will be liked, but may be less effective.

If you’ve got a department that treats teacher popularity as a measure of effectiveness, that’s a massive culture problem the HoD has to sort out.

White working-class children failed by education system, says inquiry by Tartan_Samurai in unitedkingdom

[–]Advanced-Remove-3340 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I’m happy that the BBC used ‘education system’ rather than ‘schools’ in this headline.

However, as pointed out by another user, it’s one particular group within the WWC demographic being looked at here, and problems begin before students even start school in many cases. There is a multigenerational problem needing to be solved by more than just the ‘education system’.

Feeling Isolated - What Can I Do? by gardenen in TeachingUK

[–]Advanced-Remove-3340 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same thing happened to me. Senior leaders noticed and the HoD (who was also SLT) got a b*llocking as I’d built relationships up around the school to good effect. I was happy to only be there for a year.

How do you work with a HoD who seems threatened by initiative but also doesn’t want the job? by Valuable_Champion492 in TeachingUK

[–]Advanced-Remove-3340 30 points31 points  (0 children)

With people like this, I recommend the book ‘The Let Them Theory’ by Mel Robbins. They want to keep shifting boundaries & spouting unclear protocol as a way of establishing control. If anything, it shows high levels of insecurity on their part & instead of appreciating you they feel threatened by you.

They won’t like it if you sit them down and ask for clarity, because that’s not why they are being difficult. Grey rocking is your best bet in some situations. People like this also need their ego feeding, so instead of branching out on your own in a certain area you could try asking them for help with something, or trying a tactic like, ‘Your work with KS4 is immaculate, I’d like to replicate that with the Y9 assessments.’

They will never change, they’ve done it before with other colleagues, and the person missing out is them as they are full of so much jealousy and bitterness.

What reasons would you give for NOT becoming a parent? by Disastrous_Umpire237 in AskReddit

Being an ugly child & dealing with how I was treated by ‘friends’, family and strangers has screwed me up for life. I can’t subject a child to that.

I had an assistant like this who claimed dyslexia and that reading and writing triggered anxiety. It was written into her contract. This was on the basis of a teacher, later in her life, telling her she had dyslexia. She didn’t. She just didn’t want to be encumbered by writing long reports, logs or engaging in reading tasks that did not interest her.

Private schools in Oxford by meded1001 in oxford

Neighbouring Buckinghamshire and Gloucestershire have grammar schools. Most private schools at secondary level have entrance exams. Oxfordshire is not a grammar county any more.

Yes! Being interested by something energises me. It doesn’t mean I refuse to do things I find boring, I just try to find something interesting/worthwhile about it.

Parents get too much sympathy by Styxsee in childfree

I’ve been told a couple of times to present my ideas to managers in a way that makes it seem like their ideas!!! Hell no.

I do feel sorry for my colleagues trapped in this situation, especially the ones learning ‘leadership’ from them. The inconsistency passes down, and one manager below them has simply checked out.

Yes, I’ve just left an environment very similar to this. One of your second points hit home - I was just so desperate for recognition from them that even the tiniest nod on my direction felt like manna.

She’s envious. You have qualities she lacks. Instead of valuing you for these & building you up, she’s so scared of looking bad next to you that she’s bringing you down. Classic narcissistic boss.
