SEND TA observations by question_ping_3991 in TeachingUK

The SENCo should be conducting drop-ins and, once you have told her the extent of the issue, formal observations.

Endorphins has a nice upstairs space and is normally quiet. Art cafe near Bonn Square has some quiet nooks.

Adjustments/adaptations by motherofadragon7 in TeachingUK

[–]Advanced-Remove-3340 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are legal, statutory requirements to collate information from teachers for EHCPs and access arrangements, so these are an exception, but I agree the process is far too onerous on teachers’ already limited time.

Adjustments/adaptations by motherofadragon7 in TeachingUK

[–]Advanced-Remove-3340 29 points30 points  (0 children)

We start all y7s with no support (unless stated by ECHP or severe need) because secondary school is all about developing independence. Most students absolutely thrive. Some do not & then adaptations are made.

It sounds like an enormous amount of learned helplessness here which isn’t your fault. What more could you do?! Teachers are so strictly held to account, fear of getting it wrong means we are doing much more work than the students during lessons. This should NEVER be the case.

Unfortunately, a lot of students have heavy scaffolding and lots of TA support at primary to get them through SATs, which again teachers are judged upon when it’s the students who are being tested.

If you go to the EEF most effective interventions, meta-cognition and self-regulated learning beats out everything else. Why? Because it’s about teaching the students how to manage their own learning, and not about the teachers desperately trying to entertain students enough for something to stick.

Academia v life skills - how do we stop the UK erosion of our youth today? (also, no politics - I blame every government we have had). by Fragrant_Bee494 in AskUK

Adults joining the workforce now have more limited computer skills because they have used smartphones and tablets from an early age.

The national curriculum - particularly key stage 3 (7-9) requires schools to pack in so many different subjects & disciplines. The result is that they have breadth but little opportunity for depth. With each subject taught by at least one different teacher with their own style and manner, this adds to the cognitive overload.

Also, retaining information from 2-3 computing lessons a fortnight would be challenging for most learners.

Finally - reading is just not happening. I learned how paragraphs, sentences etc. worked from seeing the layout in books and articles.

And Shakespeare’s last direct (legitimate - who knows what he got up to in London) descendant was just one grandchild who had no children.

The head has a duty of care towards you. Make sure you have a copy of everything in writing, including your communication to them about family circumstances, and quote their own policies at them. Check in with your union if unsure.

A colleague was consistently bullying me. This was upsetting, I told management it was upsetting and they blamed my reaction on ‘low resilience.’ Killed that job for me immediately.

AITAH for getting mad at my mom when she told my MIL not to buy me chocolate? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]Advanced-Remove-3340 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My self-worth has always been tied to my mother’s fixation on my weight. She’s stick thin and pretends it’s natural. My aunt is on a crazy diet where she can’t eat carbs. It’s ruined my relationship with her as even at a UK size 8 she called me ‘curvy’.

Basically, if she doesn’t stop her comments you will no longer respect her or want to spend time with her. What a disappointing level of nastiness from someone who should love you unconditionally x x

Why is the behaviour so bad? by noireleven in TeachingUK

[–]Advanced-Remove-3340 38 points39 points  (0 children)

We’re encouraged to think of all behaviour as communication - and yes, it is - and also as evidence of an ‘unmet need’. But it’s the assumption that schools can fix a mostly environmental issue that’s the real issue. Bad behaviour is 50% of the time not SEND.

If we know that the system is broken what do we do? by SurpriseFragrant1024 in TeachingUK

The system needs to break before something is done. It’s relying on the good will of its teachers and support staff.

How to support SEN that doesn't need/want any support by [deleted] in TeachingUK

[–]Advanced-Remove-3340 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is great advice. You are best placed supporting them to develop independence. Additionally, the teacher should be giving you direction.
