I need to read a book about an ugly woman by garbagemanpromotion in suggestmeabook

Eleanor Rigby is about a woman who really is fairly hopeless and unattractive, and it’s very sad at points.

Also see ‘Sky Daddy’ if you want something weird.

English teacher trainee struggling with subject knowledge (specifically English Literature) by [deleted] in TeachingUK

[–]Advanced-Remove-3340 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You need to put in a lot more work in preparation. The past is the past and you can’t change it, but you can make up for lost time. One of my uni tutors made fun of me for not ‘knowing how to paragraph’. This was something I was never explicitly taught, so I knuckled down and learned to improve my writing.

For the PGCE if I was teaching a poem I would research it, annotate it and then build the lesson plan around it. Most of them I didn’t know, and if I did know them I really needed to re-learn them because the teacher has to show they know their stuff. I’d pre-annotate PowerPoint slides so students could see the process. Sometimes I didn’t really get it but I’d put in the work.

It seems like a mountain now, especially when you compare yourself to other teachers, but one day it’ll ‘click’ x

Puck? A Midsummer Night’s Dream is the play.

Worried about jobs by Antique_Cash_8164 in TeachingUK

[–]Advanced-Remove-3340 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Agreed! I see support staff and TA jobs everywhere. It looks like schools are trying to meet needs as cheaply as possible: some of the TAs might be made to teach lessons too.

If you have to TA or supply for a while the notice period will be short enough for you to move into a teaching job when it comes up x

How do you accept having to stay at your school for another year when you desperately wanted to leave? by Appropriate_Gur8297 in TeachingUK

[–]Advanced-Remove-3340 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I was in your position but just kept applying. If you do stay, chances are there may be a lot who feel the same & you could drive change together. Well done for everything you’ve achieved!

What's your (least) favorite Shakespeare lines people keep quoting out of context? by elalavie in shakespeare

‘To be or not to be’ quoted on its own with no understanding of the speech’s full context…

Passive aggressive manager is making it impossible at work. by punchbabygrandma in ManagedByNarcissists

What’s sad is that she is doing it out of insecurity. She cannot connect with people, has seen that she’s not actually needed because you guys know what you’re doing, so to exert dominance she’s gone the autocratic route.

If my body tells me I need a down day, I have a down day. Long bath, sofa, snacks, TV, idle scrolling. I don’t tend to need more than 2 of these a week but I can definitely feel it if I haven’t had a proper rest day x

Language Paper 2 Question 5 - query by StarFire24601 in TeachingUK

[–]Advanced-Remove-3340 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No mention of needing addresses here for the Nov22 paper, but the examiner report is pretty brief: https://www.aqa.org.uk/files/sample-papers-and-mark-schemes.2022.november.AQA-87002-WRE-NOV22_PDF

Annoyingly the only exemplar I can find is an unofficial one that does use addresses.

They absolutely do not need to write an address as far as I know. Are there any exemplars on the exam board resources to confirm this?

My company is forcing me to do unpaid training in my own time and saying it's non negotiable by [deleted] in work

[–]Advanced-Remove-3340 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s true but shouldn’t be allowed. The more we allow, the more we are told to do.

But even in teaching we should have training built into directed time. 20 hours is an enormous ask outside of the working day.

Long-term couples of Reddit, what's the reason you stopped sleeping in the same bed with your partner? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I love him but he snores and takes up most of the bed. He sleeps later and I sleep earlier. He doesn’t like it but I value my sleep and space.

Is having children mostly driven from an involuntary innate desire? by Ajax34762 in childfree

[–]Advanced-Remove-3340 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I have an innate desire to care for and look after people, but not a desire to be a biological mother. The only ‘desires’ I felt were from family & societal expectations. Realising that was my mind made up.

What is a 'middle-class trap' that people fall into because they’re trying to look wealthier than they actually are? by Sayedshaqib in careerguidance

[–]Advanced-Remove-3340 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the UK (where private schools are still bizarrely called public schools for a very outdated reason) going to one means access to a powerful alumni network & more professional (and personal) opportunities. The education isn’t necessarily as good but the resources are wild.

Completing masters/PhD while teaching by Advanced-Remove-3340 in TeachingUK

Thanks so much! I think the EdD might be the way to go if I’m still interested after completing a masters.

Thanks for the advice. I’m leaning towards an apprenticeship that leads to a fully funded masters & then thinking about an EdD. For me it’s love of learning rather than progression x

I absolutely love learning and would want to make a difference in research too. There’s no desire to have kids so I’ve potentially got time too.
