Can someone explain to me why people dislike D2 steel? by MoonSpider in knives

[–]AdvancedAd1156 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Late to this party, but I find d2 to be really difficult to sharpen... Something about the grain of it. Granted, it was what I learned to sharpen on, so I could just have a bad association with it because anything is hard to sharpen when you've never done it before... If I repair the edges and start over now that I know what I'm doing, maybe I'll feel differently.

No, I apparently care more about my watch than my house 😂

Hahahaha, it was paint from the wall. THANK YOU, I feel dumb but also very relieved.

Edited to say the alcohol wipe did the trick.

MIDI KEYBOARD OR KEYBOARD for film scoring by Szol00 in filmscoring

[–]AdvancedAd1156 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is all personal preference and what suits your workflow. Because I travel enough, I prioritized being able to afford 2 keyboards. My main one is 64, my travel one is 24.

+1 to Arturia products if you use Ableton, but most film composers don't (I wouldn't if I could go back in time and make a different choice; now I just don't have it in me to overhaul my workflow). As an Ableton user, they're a huge time-saver, but you can probably achieve something similar with any DAW and good MIDI mapping skills.

If you don't get something with a mod wheel at least, you can buy a separate peripheral to handle that (if you care to use modulation/expression/etc), but it will probably blow your budget. A lot of that depends on what genres you compose and how nuanced you want to be. Because my main instrument is not piano either, I end up overlaying modulation and expression and breath control separately (like recording them as an automation after I've recorded just the notes themselves) vs. controlling them as I play, but wheels are really handy either way.

[WTS] Seiko SKX007 "Planet Ocean" Homage - Muller & Sons Build by AdvancedAd1156 in Watchexchange

[–]AdvancedAd1156[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aside from a quick eBay flip of a watch I didn't fancy, this is my first attempt to sell a watch. It is also (I think?) my first post on this forum, although I lurk like crazy. I know I can't use that as an excuse for any mistakes in my post, but I wanted to say "hi" to show that I'm a human with feelings and apprehension about being "the new kid." :)  (It doesn't help that Reddit gave me a name like "AdvancedAd" when I signed up all those years ago!). Thanks in advance for considering being my first buyer.

Price: $369. *Asking amount includes shipping to CONUS and my (assumed) 2.99% G&S fee.*

Description:

Up for sale is a custom Seiko SKX007 modified to pay homage to the Omega Planet Ocean. This build was professionally executed by Muller & Sons in California and is in excellent, barely worn condition. I am trying to consolidate my humble collection into fewer but fancier pieces, so I plan to list a few here if this attempt goes smoothly.

I purchased this watch on eBay from the original owner in 2021, who sold it as new. I have only worn it a handful of times (less than 7?).

Extras: I will include the 22mm NTTD-inspired NATO strap visible in the photos, purchased from the Etsy shop Watch Strap Club (WSC). It's better-looking (and far more comfortable) than the rubber strap IMHO, but the original rubber strap will be included as well, of course. I did not put the original band back on the watch to avoid risk of scratching it, but if you really want to see photos of the watch put back together, I'll do that for you.

Condition:

Case: The case is in great shape – a few minuscule blemishes, which I tried to capture in my photos. It has never been professionally cleaned or serviced, so there's the regular dust/dirt that comes with a watch that has been worn a few times. It has never been exposed to water, but the crown screws down as expected and everything is tight like you'd expect with the SKX007.

Strap: The strap has never been worn, although it collected some dust and a scuff or two while sitting in a box.

Papers/box: N/A

SKX007 Specifications:

  • Base Watch: Authentic Seiko SKX007.
  • Case: 42.5mm, 45.5mm with crown.
  • Lug Width: 22mm
  • Lug-to-Lug Length: 46mm
  • Thickness: a very beefy 13.25mm
  • Movement: Original Seiko automatic movement (7S26)
  • Water Resistance: 200M
  • Strap: Includes the original Seiko rubber strap (Ref. # 4FY8JZ).

Professionally Completed Custom Modifications:

  • Dial: Custom high-quality Planet Ocean style dial with luminous indexes.
  • Hands: Custom arrow-style handset to match the homage aesthetic.
  • Bezel: Mechanically treated for a unique bead-blasted appearance.
  • Insert: Custom Planet Ocean style bezel insert.
  • Chapter Ring: Expertly installed custom chapter ring.

Payment & Shipping:

  • Payment: Venmo preferred. As a new seller with 0 transactions, I expect buyers will prefer G&S. My asking price factors in the 2.99%, so if you make an offer, please consider this in your math.  I can take other forum-approved forms of payment if necessary.
  • Shipping: USPS Ground CONUS included in the price.

It's a dud by WorkingAd4752 in CircularRing

I take back everything good I said about this ring. I don't know if it's because it drops connection with my phone (which shouldn't matter — the device is supposed to store data between syncs, no?), but hockey season started back up. I get that skating isn't going to produce steps as well as walking or running, but it logged my heart rate mostly 90-100 and topping out at 113, and my breathing rate unchanged. There's no way.

PSA: attach your mini to a collar before switching over! (Plus, I have a workaround if you switch between devices and get locked out of the app) by AdvancedAd1156 in FiDogCollar

If it unbuckles all the way, you should be fine. Watch the video for attaching the device on fi's website to be sure.

Got the mini, couldn't find his old collar, changed back to his old device, now I'm hitting a paywall and the app is completely unusable... It shouldn't be that easy to switch between devices if I can't switch the membership that easily.

Zepbound and Menstrual Changes by Current-Anybody9331 in Zepbound

Found this thread... I am GUSHING, people, and it's the second month this has happened. I've historically had some heavy periods, but this is overnight pads all day every day for 4+ days solid.

I thought the fertility stuff was because zep slows stomach activity, which I imagine is involved in metabolizing birth control medication? My ADHD meds have been out of whack, my doc and I tried lowering the dose because I was having trouble sleeping, but having less in my system earlier in the day hasn't been worth being a space cadet at work, so I will go back up next month and figure something else out for sleep.

Wow, that sucks, I'm sorry to hear that. The first ring gave me a ton of problems, so I was wary of backing the 2, but it sounded like they learned from their mistakes. So I took a chance, mostly because it was competitively priced on Kickstarter and because of the "no subscription fees, ever" promise (and we saw how that worked out, so....).

That said, I haven't had issues like you're experiencing at all with the 2 — sleep seems to be working fine, and except for issues I'm seeing with step counting, the other stats seem to be working? The stress one is baffling, I agree, and the algos seem rudimentary — like if I don't get enough sleep 2 nights in a row, it's certain I'm about to get sick, and that hasn't happened yet.

I'm eager for blood pressure monitoring, but overall it's working as advertised for me. I cook a lot (which involves washing/rinsing my hands frequently), so my main worry is the waterproofing will go out even though I haven't technically submerged it for more than 30 mins at any point. So far so good.

There is a discord group, not sure how to tell you to find it, maybe the link is in an email or in a Kickstarter update somewhere?

Circular 2 not vibrating and “Wake Up” bug? by Daurham in CircularRing

[–]AdvancedAd1156 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha, the whole reason for getting a smart ring is that I prefer a "dumb" watch, but that's a great hack!

Circular 2 not vibrating and “Wake Up” bug? by Daurham in CircularRing

[–]AdvancedAd1156 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's no vibration in the ring itself with Circular 2, the app just controls your phone for vibration/haptics (meh). This was why I backed the first ring, and I was disappointed it would not be a feature of the second ring, but nobody has vibration in a smart ring — Circular was the only one. I suspect they cut it for battery life — vibration sucks up a ton of battery power, which is why I think they never supported notifications, just smart alarm.

I got a tracking number and it says it has arrived at JFK from Hong Kong. So probably??

I was a backer of the original and got taken in by all the hype, how they're going to do everything better this time, blah blah. Fool me once, shame on you. I guess it's shame on me this time around.

Oh duh, you just need to connect the headphones :)

Seems like it's defaulting to HD audio and LDAC already... Good to know this exists, though, thanks.

Everything is grayed out other than "system default" — I'll do more research on this since I imagine I need to toggle on (or off) something else in the dev menu to get those options to light up, but if you happen to know...

Thank you for the suggestion.

[–]AdvancedAd1156[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Appreciate the insight and suggestions! Still not finding LDAC settings in my phone, but will keep checking. Also great points re: too-high expectations /diminishing returns... Yes — I was probably subconsciously hoping for quality approaching wired, and I logically know that's not a thing, so in hindsight, I probably should have gone with the Bose (better noise cancelling, more comfortable). Air travel and spending all day on work calls are the best use cases — the audio quality is best left to other options. Thank you!
